To think that Soup is a meal?

As in a decent, homemade Minestone soup we are planning to eat tonight

I was merrily chopping ingredients for dinner tonight, when my mother facetime called us.

Mother: oh sorry, didn't mean to disturb you
Me: thats fine, im only chopping ingredients for dinner tonight
Mother: ooh what are you having?
Me: Minestone soup
Mother: what? soup? for dinner?
Me: erm yep, why not? we like Minestone soup
Mother: (still gobsmacked) what, all of you?

And so on and so on for about 5 minutes. Its a Jamie Oliver recipe, with lots of vegetables in, bacon, harricot beans, and pasta. Hearty, and filling after a day of diy and walking.

If I had called it Minestrone casserole, containing the same ingredients, im sure she would have declared in a marvellous idea. Its just because it contained the word 'soup'

So, is 'soup' dinner for you also?

We have soup roughly once a week in the autumn/winter months.

Mexican three bean tonight with toasted pitta.

Fairylea · 05/11/2018 17:14

I couldn’t eat soup for dinner. I’d feel hard done by Grin when I was little and we were very poor we ate a lot of soup and tinned potatoes!

Penguinsetpandas · 05/11/2018 17:35

This is like 克勒多 - that is not for Heron and it wasn't you we suspected of being a spy Sciencels or Woolly killing people in high speed rail crashes with soup not Heron

Chesneyhawkes1 · 05/11/2018 17:37

Not for me. I associate soup with being ill and when I was little my Mum always gave me chicken soup when I wasn't well.

Heaviestdirtyestsoul · 05/11/2018 17:43

Hi Soup-er people! Thought this might be the place to ask this, but what can i do soup wise with a butternut squash and some leeks? Need using up and all I can think of is soup, glorious soup and tiger loaf and salted butter... ❤

Urbanbeetler · 05/11/2018 17:58

Roast the butternut squash in its skin - with a couple of roast onions maybe - and scrape the flesh out of the skin when it’s cooked. Blend together with some stock for autumn soup or add Thai red paste and coconut milk for a spiced soup. Leeks could also go in or do a leek and potato one as well.

Noted and auctioned.

Has mulligatawny been mentioned yet? We mustn’t miss the signal.

HeronLanyon · 05/11/2018 18:02

Actioned not auctioned. My cypher machine is playing up.

ifancyachinese · 05/11/2018 18:09

Sounds lovely I'm going to try this!

Soup is a meal here with crusty bread. It has to be quite thick though. I like the Jamie Oliver leek & potato soup but I pulse it until very thick. Dh makes a good broccoli & Stilton.

Adding this to my list to make, also on the list is the Jamie Oliver English onion soup.

Penguinsetpandas · 05/11/2018 18:11

Hope you managed to raise a lot with the auction Heron 😉

I watching out for the bloody Mary soup

Though I think men maybe at risk from the butternut squash and leek soup here if you look at the picture. www.deliaonline.com/recipes/collections/waist-watchers/leek-and-butternut-squash-soup

Oh good lord ! But surely they wouldn’t be so brazen? They look golden also. There may be colour code at play - orange pepper as an ingredient may be key to plans. The golden face . . . The golden squash . . . God they’re clever.

Penguinsetpandas · 05/11/2018 18:47

It's a good job we are not on the case then. I don't reckon its some people with fake tans behind this with the love of all things gold and orange.

Heaviestdirtyestsoul · 05/11/2018 18:51

Thank you- will have a go x

JuniorDetective · 05/11/2018 19:11

I feel this thread is MN at its best! Gloves are off.

JuniorDetective · 05/11/2018 19:12

Plus a few recipes thrown in...

JuniorDetective · 05/11/2018 19:13

And a Russian spy conspriracy

HeronLanyon · 05/11/2018 19:56

Although the photo of the stew (good looking stew) posted some time ago now had a visible Russian hatted / golden faced figure I remain convinced we are in a non Russian scenario here. It also appears only 3 or 4 of us see the face which means we are somehow involved.

This and soup ! Grin

limitedperiodonly · 05/11/2018 20:12

Love home made soup, can't stand soup from a can

Why not izzledrizz? I make homemade soup but I also enhance readymade fresh soups and - horror - canned soup with my own ingredients.

It's stunted not to consider doing that.

ks

. I would eat this but would probably need a dessert and starter
