To believe that fireworks shouldn’t be available to the general public?

Fireworks at this time of night!!!

I’m partial to a sparkler don’t get me wrong, but I just don’t agree with fireworks being readily available for joe public. Particularly when people let them off after 11pm!

I’m not saying get rid of them all together but make it stricter so they’re only let off in safe environments by people who’ve had adequate training who then clean everything up and it’s all done and dusted before 11pm.

Am I getting old??

Completely agree. I have always thought that fireworks should only be at organised displays, not just since I reached middle age! They are lovely, and I always take my kids to an organised display, but they are also so dangerous. I think it's completely barking that any idiot can just let them off in their back garden/street etc.

I think pet-owners forget that it's not obligatory to have a pet, it's something they've chosen to do. As such, it's up to them to make sure their pet is sufficiently shielded from the fireworks, not for people who wish to have a little fun to have to think about every Tom, Dick and Harry's bloody pet dog

There is also the need to consider livestock. My sister is an equine vet and has a long list of injuries to terrified horses at this time of year, along with burn injuries from Chinese lanterns that all the people release as part of exercising their right to have fun. Similar problems with other livestock. It’s not just pets, it’s small children and some adults. I have a patient with PTSD and for him random loud bangs are terrifying. No one expects the world to stop for them or their pets but all of this could be managed if fireworks were as they used to be; confined to just a few dates and not nearly so loud - they have become much more startling in recent years.

Its so upsetting Those poor animals. Animals give their love their trust and loyalty and dont care what dress size you are.

poor things

Here is another example of how selfish humans are. An inflatable collapsed last night in Woking sending 8 children onto the ground. Amongst the panic and evacuation of the grounds so the emergency services could attend there were actually fuckers who were demanding a refund.

HelenaDove · 04/11/2018 17:00

they wanted their money back because the bloody fireworks couldnt go ahead. selfish tossers.

Knittink · 04/11/2018 17:06

I agree that they should only be allowed at official displays. Not because they are noisy (they're just as noisy at public displays), but because they are dangerous in the hands of irresponsible people (but then again, so are cars, which harm far more people).

I don't think we should start banning things just because some people don't like them or are scared of them tbh. Loud noises are pretty unavoidable in life.

We're talking about explosives, veterans with PTSD, animal livestock on farms.

Not ickle spiders.

I fear this thread may be derailed by arguing over dogs but I’m going to throw my two cents in anyway! Grin

Dogs are not the only animals in the world (but they are my personal favourite) that are scared this time of year. As many have said it also affects wildlife such as birds hedgehogs squirrels etc. I’m also going to point out that they are the animals that are most affected the next day when people don’t clean up after themselves.

Before people say well actually FatNoMorePat we have never littered in our whole lives especially not after hosting our mega firework bonanza with all everyone from our village on our spacious lawn whilst observing all of the recommended safety precautions, jolly well done and good for you but not everyone else has the decency to pick up after themselves and it’s that lack of accountability I really struggle with.

Also dogs are the best Grin

Agreed.

Same with some air rifles.

tryingtosortmylifeout · 04/11/2018 18:08

My lovely, very timid rescue cat is currently cowering under the sofa thanks to at least three neighbours setting off fireworks in their gardens tonight. OP - YANBU at all.

HelenaDove · 04/11/2018 18:43

The late Dovecat used to look up at us when a firework went off.

Luckily with her the calming sound of our voices was enough. We would speak to her and tell her Dont worry they arent coming in.

i miss her so much.

I cannot believe the level of selfishness and insensitivity shown by some posters on this thread.

Signed - thanks Karr

l totally agree. l'm sick to the back teeth of idiots setting what are literally explosives off at all hours of the day and night.
lt bemuses me how Health and Safety are so stringent on ridiculous things (stopping kids from playing conkers, or playing with snow in their school yards for example) yet it's fine to let anyone with the money in their pocket buy these things and do what the hell they like with them.
l'm not a killjoy. l like to see nice fireworks and organised displays, but something needs to be done about selling them to the public. l saw one petition that said they should be 'labelled with the noise level so that people can have a choice'. Doesn't it occur to them that the type of people who are setting them off at all hours WANT the ones that make the most noise possible? They aren't interested in 'having a choice' unless it makes a hell of a noise and scares vulnerable people and animals? When l lived back in the North East, it was a common thing for lads to put lit bangers under the drain pipes of terraced houses. The noise was unbelievable, and dreadful if old or vulnerable people, or children, lived in the house.
Add to that injuries and incidents that the emergency services have to deal with, l genuinely cannot understand why they weren't banned for public purchase years ago.

Gingerlover2 · 04/11/2018 20:32

Thanks Karrwomannghia ..I've posted it on my facebook page as well

RedBlu · 04/11/2018 20:32

Well we have had some morons near us letting them off (residential estate) and they kept hitting our roof (counted at least eight times) and scaring out toddler and cats.

I went outside and the front had several scattered on the road and no one bothers to pick them up afterwards. I ended up picking them up and putting them in the bin.

They shouldn't sell them to the public or at least people shouldn't be so thick to set them off in residential areas.

ChardonnaysPrettySister · 04/11/2018 20:35

I signed, not holding my breath though.

I think was a petition earlier this year and it was refused.

HelenaDove · 04/11/2018 20:47

Is anyone else getting the Morrisons ad for fireworks coming down the side of the screen for fireworks followed by a Morrisons ad for cut price booze. Morrisons makes it? Yeah lets encourage ppl to let off fireworks while pissed.

DamsonGin · 04/11/2018 21:11

I'm fairly sure I've signed the same petition for the last two years and it gets a response from the government saying 'no, no, don't worry, it's all fine'. I've signed this one anyway.

Hanski444 · 04/11/2018 21:16

Miserable old fart. 11 pm and fireworks how dare they 😵.

DamsonGin · 04/11/2018 21:21

Was that directed at / in response to anyone in particular, Hanski444?

Hanski444 · 04/11/2018 21:24

U know who you are 😂😂
