To believe that fireworks shouldn’t be available to the general public?

Fireworks at this time of night!!!

I’m partial to a sparkler don’t get me wrong, but I just don’t agree with fireworks being readily available for joe public. Particularly when people let them off after 11pm!

I’m not saying get rid of them all together but make it stricter so they’re only let off in safe environments by people who’ve had adequate training who then clean everything up and it’s all done and dusted before 11pm.

Am I getting old??

100% agree. Bloody strongly and with bells on. Fuck fireworks. I've spent too long dealing with vulnerable people and even animals that have a rough bloody time at this point in the year and it lasts for weeks at a time. Does anyone know what the laws are specifically around fireworks in residential areas? Not that it's fair to be popping them off in a sparsely populated area either ofc.

Without fail there’s a story every year about people getting hurt because of fireworks and I despair!

@teaandtoast do I need to lighten up? My whole family think I’m a bit of a sourpuss Wink

I also agree. Organised and licensed displays only, restricted to special occasions and not any other times. Seeing my dog shake with fear and refusing to go out is awful, and it can go on for weeks with a random bang at any old time. The poor wildlife too.

Oh, I totally agree. But, then again, I also think hardly anyone should be allowed to own a dog either, and I’m probably in a minority for both, so ya know.....

One of my earliest memories is of my great granny and her little Yorkshire terrier both shaking under their blanket during fireworks. I think people get so caught up in the novelty of them they forget how scared our vulnerable people and animals get!

I’m furiously curtain twitching and mumbling under my breath but I can’t tell where it’s coming from!

Many other countries you cannot purchase fireworks, they are only allowed in professional displays. Ive always been terrified of them and I'm so glad my husband is working this year so I dont have to venture outside. They are dangerous explosives and I will not go to anyone house for fireworks because I completely disagree with the sale of fireworks to the public.

I agree, organised displays only, on set days, for a limited amount of time.

Fortunately my cats don’t get too bothered, but so many pets do.

Nobody seems to consider the workers whose sleep is disturbed, babies woken, children injured by the morons who feel they have the right to set off massive fireworks at any time.

There will always be some one who thinks that not enjoying firework season makes you joyless or whatever

I bloody hate them im autistic and i can not cope with the noise. I remeber a few years ago there were fireworks every damn night from late october till about 10 november, i couldnt sleep i moreless couldnt do anything because even in my own flat i couldnt get away. Even tonight i had one set going of near the back of my house and one near the front i couldnt be anywhere where i couldnt hear them. I know im not the only person with noise sensory issues to feel like this

Then theres the animals, not just domestic animals but wildlife, it affects their routine and habitates

As has been said in many countries they arent on sale to the genral public, it doesnt affect peoples enjoyment of them. In fact it increases it because you cant get better desplays and it makes it a social occassion.

Ive seen people literslly throeing fireworks in the street almost at people and laughing how is this a good thing????

Yadnbu my dog also agrees with that. He hates fireworks fortnight. He just can’t rest at this time of the year he’s constantly on edge.

Can anyone buy and let off fireworks??

Here in N.I you have to have a license to buy them otherwise you can't get them.

Love firework displays but should not be used by everyone, have heard and read too many horror stories.

Completely agree. I’m Irish and it’s illigal there. I was amazed when I moved to the uk to realise that you could buy them.

So dangerous and so bloody antisocial.

Every year people are seriously injured by them. I saw reports yesterday that people were throwing them at the emergency services. And at cars.

I think there might be a petition going around somewhere about fireworks. Think I got an email. I’ll have a look.

I'm lucky, where I live now A LOT of people have dogs and I think that has something to do with it, but I haven't heard a firework yet.

Where I lived in London they would go off for about 2 weeks either side of bonfire night Hmm

My dog is going to get really freaked out - she was shaking the other day when there was lightning, and we've only had her since just after Christmas so not been through it with her yet - so I'm hoping it's only Saturday and the actual day we're going to have them going off.

There are quite a few displays around here too. I haven't even really seen fireworks on sale. Tesco has a small temporary counter at the front, but blink and you'll miss it.

I'll ramp the TV up and spray some lavender around. Powdered Vit C in their food can help them cope with stress so I might get some today and start giving it to her tonight. I should have got done before but I only just remembered that now, writing this.

Classic FM are playing animal calming music on Saturday night so I'll play that.

But, I wouldn't have to do any of this and would be able to go to a display myself if fireworks were only allowed to be put on at displays (you can't hear the displays in our house).

I totally agree it's a nonsense.

We have them every night in August at 10pm for the tourists which I don't mind as much as it's once for about 5 minutes and you know it's coming.

Random rockets going off does my head in though. There is a family round the back of us that does it every year, they only have the big bangers that don't even "explode" they just scream into the air and bang. I always think what is the point? And this goes on til midnight.

I really wish they'd just ban them.

Fireworks are a celebration of the history of this country, a few people are arseholes I know but I'm sick of the attitude that if a few people are naughty we'll punish everyone
