This is one of the most apt political cartoon I’ve seen.

Well, I guess the world did make it to the mid terms at least. It looked slightly dubious as to whether we would at times.

borntobequiet · 06/11/2018 08:39

Good luck to all US friends.
I remember the very nice American I met at a train station in the middle of the Cotswolds when I was going to London for the anti-Trump march. He called over to his wife "Hey! Guess where this lady's going! we should pay her fare!".

Fate of Congress could be in California's hands

Maddow's take - it could take days or weeks to get the results. Arghh

borntobequiet · 06/11/2018 08:40

Aaargh lack of capitalisation error

Roussette · 06/11/2018 09:04

Aww that's lovely borntobequiet

CaveMum · 06/11/2018 09:37

Good luck everyone, keeping everything crossed for that Blue (and Pink) Wave.

Anyone know when we can start expecting exit polls?

lionheart · 06/11/2018 10:25

That is sweet, borntobe quiet.

Long time lurker here, feeling nervous today as I remember listening to NPR in the car on the day of the Trump election thinking it couldn't possibly happen, and then it did.

If any of you are on instagram, I highly recommend following Jessica Yellin, former CNN correspondent, she does great instagram stories and has picked a few key races to watch.

Good luck to all US MNers today, let's hope decency and basic respect for other people prevails.

Roussette · 06/11/2018 11:56

Welcome pinkground and I echo you

Far too little, far too late.

Desperation. He'll try anything. Even a half baked backtrack.

Yes indeed, pink. 🙂

AcrossthePond55 · 06/11/2018 13:52

Gump Thank you for the 'calm place'. I will be 'going there' a lot today, I think.

CaveMum Thanks for the list of closing times. I tend to just to just think they all close at 8 pm (local time) like ours do here in CA.

DH says he can't handle this, isn't going to watch, and doesn't want to know until it's all over. He has his 'chill pills' to hand and I've told him I'll retreat to the bedroom about 3pm when the East Coast returns start rolling in. Of course, he'll do his usual thing of saying "I'm not watching" but then shout every 15 minutes shout "What's going on?" until I get tired of shouting back the results (and missing some as a result) and come back to the living room in a huff and change the channel. 😜

It's going to be a looonngg day!

AcrossthePond55 · 06/11/2018 14:05

Anyone know when we can start expecting exit polls?

Cavemum results (including exit polls) don't start rolling in until after the polls close. What I can't remember is (since this is not a presidential election) whether or not it's the 'last polls close' in HI & AK at 6pm local time or if it's the 'local polls close', in which case it would be around 3pm local time when KY and IN close.

The purpose of waiting is so voters in later time zones aren't discouraged from voting because the results look unfavourable or 'in the bag' based on results announced in earlier time zones.

Results will be announced based on local closing times. So start expecting results around 11-11.30 pm GMT.

lionheart · 06/11/2018 14:20

Oh lord and hello pink.

ohmymimi · 06/11/2018 14:21

Here's to a better tomorrow:

Maddi123 · 06/11/2018 14:23

Ex-pat Brit here but I've been reading all the wonderful posts here from the start.

So I'm delurking now to say good luck America and all you lovely folk that sail in her. I'm rooting for you.

BolleauxtoBankers · 06/11/2018 14:26

I'm sorry for not keeping up at the back, as I'm sure you have already covered this on this and earlier threads, but I've only just realised that the electoral college holds no sway in the mid-terms (would that be because it is not a Presidential race this time?), or have I got that completely wrong? Because if if it is so, then every single vote is presumably even more important at this mid-term? (Please excuse me if I am talking through my hat, I also remember the utter disbelief at Trump's win in 2016, pink (much as I had felt at the outcome of the Brexit referendum earlier that year), and am looking for reasons for Trump and the GOP not to pull a win out of the hat this time round.)
On the one hand, I am heartened by all the #GOPVotingBlue tweets I'm seeing on Twitter, with people definitely putting country before party in their disgust at Trump and the GOP, but still amazed and saddened by the large numbers of #RedWave2018 tweets there are, too Sad
