AIBU to feel a bit suspicious?

My husband works in a IT department and their working hours on their website say 9am-6pm Monday to Friday. However he has said he will be working extra at the weekends doing overtime. I am really suspicious and feel a bit worried whether he really is at work or not... I feel like driving there to see if his car is parked! Is it weird that their office hours say 9-6 during the week only, closed weekends yet he is working weekends when it's closed? Hmm

Maybe IT need to work outside of office hours occasionally? Incase the computers need updates or something, that would inconvenience people who are trying to use them during office hours?

Fluffyears · 13/10/2018 13:39

Monoffive hours are mon-fri 9-5 but we sometimes work overtime doingither stuffehilst we are closed to the public. Has he give you any reason to doubt his word?

bubbles092 · 13/10/2018 13:41

No he hasn't at all, I don't believe he would do something like that but I just have paranoia and anxiety thinking he is with someone else! I need to get a grip Blush

The issue here is that you don’t trust your DH. If my DH told me he was working at the weekend it wouldn’t even occur to me that he wasn’t telling the truth.

CrispbuttyNo1 · 13/10/2018 13:42

In IT it is often normal to work weekends as it causes less disruption.

Crunchymum · 13/10/2018 13:42

Our IT team occasinally have to go in over the weekend. It's the best time if they are doing something like changing servers or doing a big upgrade.

Why the immediate leap to feeling suspcisious about it OP?

Heartofglass72 · 13/10/2018 13:43

You just need to ask him what he's doing whilst the offices are closed. Could be a very simple truthful answer rather than you being suspicious and wondering what he's getting up to!!

bionicnemonic · 13/10/2018 13:43

Our IT department regularly work outside what are considered our opening hours...they were here till nearly midnight the other day.

CurlyhairedAssassin · 13/10/2018 13:44

My DH works in IT. He does a LOT of work outside weekday hours. Has brought laptop home this weekend and is working today but sometimes does need to go into the office at weekends.

catenthusiast · 13/10/2018 13:44

Both me and my DH work/have worked in various IT roles and have had to do out-of-hours overtime on weekends, evenings and sometimes in the middle of the night! It's most likely so the clients don't experience too much disruption if a service goes down while it's updating or being fixed.

Nomad86 · 13/10/2018 13:45

IT often work weekends installing updates that can't be done while staff are there.

Heartofglass72 · 13/10/2018 13:45

It probably is your own anxiety and insecurities but it's easier said than done trying to ignore it isn't it,I've been there. Just ask him. I doubt anything is untoward unless you have previous suspicions

CoughLaughFart · 13/10/2018 13:48

Publicly advertised ‘Office hours’ are likely to be the times staff will be available to speak to clients or customers. I’m sure a grill doesn’t come down at 6.01 and if you’re not out by then, you’re trapped until 9 the next morning. Plus as others have said, IT is the kind of job where it may be both necessary and beneficial for work to be done outside of standard hours.

Holdingonbarely · 13/10/2018 13:49

This is entirely your issue unless there is a massive drip feed to come.
You need to work on yourself. This is not a normal reaction to overtime.

Athena51 · 13/10/2018 13:54

Our office is closed at weekends but if the IT team have a new system roll-out, test or the like then they will work over weekends so it's not suspicious in itself.

It's pretty horrible to be suspected of wrongdoing when innocent so if he hasn't given you cause for concern don't drive him away with suspicion and tracking his every move.

greenlynx · 13/10/2018 13:55

My DN works in IT and just did overtime on the evenings last week. He was even paid a little bit extra for this.
I would rather think carefully why you don’t trust him 100%.

oakthorn · 13/10/2018 13:58

I work in construction and our it dept often work late nights and weekends to update things which can't be done in office hours. One had a 3a.m. Start last week to set up a new satellite office.

Newtothis2017 · 13/10/2018 14:10

Very normal for the IT staff to work weekends and evenings

RaptorInaPorkPieHat · 13/10/2018 14:13

DH works in IT (9-5 office hours) and often works evenings/weekends/bank holidays (they often do upgrades etc when no-one else is working). He also gets called out if the shit hits the fan overnight.

Is he new to the job or has the overtime only recently become a thing?

Volant · 13/10/2018 14:20

My office hours say 9-5, Monday to Friday. I'm there now (yes, I know it's a bit daft to be on MN but I'm having a tea break) and am regularly there till at least 7 on weekdays. I'm definitely not having a raging affair!

2Brieornot2Brie · 13/10/2018 14:20

Like others say, my husband is in IT and working the odd evening or weekend is normal. If it’s a big upgrade or system change that involves taking the whole system down it can’t be done during working hours without massively inconveniencing everyone.

VimFuego101 · 13/10/2018 14:24

Perfectly normal to work out of hours in IT. Systems can't be taken down/ upgraded while people are actually using them during working hours.

bubbles092 · 13/10/2018 14:33

Thanks everyone that actually does make sense now! Just letting my imagination get the better of me Shock

It's a professional job. It's normal to be working outside contracted hours.

Kidssendingmenuts · 13/10/2018 14:46

Those hours on the website will be when they are contactable to customers. In IT they will work out of hours to work on the servers, do upgrades and run programs etc. They can't do these in Normal hours as people will be using the systems and they need plenty of time to test new things. It's the norm I'm afraid so yes your being a bit unreasonable
