I know this is not an AIBU but you lot are amazing at identifying songs from vague descriptions and the odd lyric so... can you help me with this film?

It's about a depressed man who bumps into his ex girlfriend whilst in a supermarket. He hasn't seen her since the breakup and she has moved on but he hasn't. She is visiting their home town but lives elsewhere.
They go for coffee together and end up spending the day together talking. It's slow paced and they are the only two characters.

It's driving me mad! Can anyone help?! Smile

Garden State?

Catzpyjamas · 06/10/2018 21:19

Met my old lover in the grocery store
The snow was falling Christmas Eve
I stood behind her in the frozen foods
And I touched her on the sleeve

She didn't recognize the face at first
But then her eyes flew open wide
She went to hug me and she spilled her purse
And we laughed until we cried

We took her groceries to the check out stand
The food was totaled up and bagged
We stood there lost in our embarrassment
As the conversation lagged

We went to have ourselves a drink or two
But couldn't find an open bar
We bought a six-pack at the liquor store
And we drank it in her car

We drank a toast to innocence
We drank a toast to now
We tried to reach beyond the emptiness
But neither one knew how

She said she's married her an architect
Who kept her warm and safe and dry
She would have liked to say she loved the man
But she didn't like to lie

I said the years had been a friend to her
And that her eyes were still as blue
But in those eyes I wasn't sure if I saw
Doubt or gratitude

She said she saw me in the record stores
And that I must be doing well
I said the audience was heavenly
But the traveling was Hell

We drank a toast to innocence
We drank a toast to now
We tried to reach beyond the emptiness
But neither one knew how

We drank a toast to innocence
We drank a toast to time
Reliving, in our eloquence
Another "Auld Lang Syne"

The beer was empty and our tongues were tired
And running out of things to say
She gave a kiss to me as I got out
And I watched her drive away

Just for a moment I was back at school
And felt that old familiar pain
And, as I turned to make my way back home
The snow turned into rain

Catzpyjamas · 06/10/2018 21:20

Same Old Lang Syne by Dan Fogelberg?

AuntBeastie · 06/10/2018 21:20

Before sunset?

WowserBowser · 06/10/2018 21:21

Catzpyjamas - it's a film

WhiteDust · 06/10/2018 21:25

Not Before sunset Sad
It seemed like a low budget film - actors weren't famous I don't think.
I remember the man being dark haired & stocky?

Anyway, I thought of Garden State (Zach Braff and Natalie Portman). Or perhaps Elizabethtown (Orlando Bloom).
I think they both involve sombre young men, who return to their home towns for funerals.

WhiteDust · 06/10/2018 21:27

Catz Your lyrics describe the film almost too well... I'm wondering if it was based on the song?

m.imdb.com/list/ls057244034/

Any of these?
Before Sunset was my best guess too...

blurredspeech · 06/10/2018 21:28

Was it a British film? American?

WhiteDust · 06/10/2018 21:30

Phil No, although I think I might watch 'Elizabethtown' now!

implantsandaDyson · 06/10/2018 21:30

It's called Bluejay - was on Netflix recently. Sarah Paulson is in it.

WhiteDust · 06/10/2018 21:31

Blurred American - The supermarket was an American food 'store' not a Walmart type place. They went to a bar afterwards.

I like Elizabethtown, it’s one of the films in my easygoing cheese pile.
