To think I'm an idiot re: school uniform?

4 year old DS started school, all fine. Only problem is we bought his trousers and they have a hook and eye fastening and a zip.

He can't undo the hook and eye. Thankfully they are a bit big around the waist so he can pull then up and down to go to the loo. But they also hang too low and you can see his underpants lol

Anyone else had that problem? Am I the only idiot not to buy elasticated waist or popper?

It’s a learning curve ! Don’t worry 😉 we’ve all done it xx

KM99 · 21/09/2018 21:09

Sorry hook and bar not hook and eye!

Replace with velcro?

Homemadearmy · 21/09/2018 21:12

Do they not have the elastic on the inside that you tighten?

Creeper8 · 21/09/2018 21:14

all my kids trousers are like that. both my boys just pulll them down

KM99 · 21/09/2018 21:14

Homemadearmy they do, but if I tighten then he can't get them undone because of the fastening. I'm just worried he ends up wetting himself at school. Hook and bar seems a bit complicated for a 4 year old

Op don't beat yourself up about it, use this as an opportunity to teach him a new skill (spend a few minutes each day opening and closing it, and getting him to try until he gets the hang of doing it himselfGrin)

KM99 · 21/09/2018 21:15

Creeper8 that's a relief it's not just me. 😁

Did the same as you. Bought M and S ones in a panic. Too long. Researched online. Settled with Sainsburys. Great fit. Adjustable waste. Pull up only. No hooks! Good luck.

GreenTulips · 21/09/2018 21:18

Bit like the rear zips on girls dresses or the tiny buttons instead of zips.

You live and learn!

PattiStanger · 21/09/2018 21:20

Aren't all boys school trousers like that? I have to say it's not something I'd ever considered as a problem, I don't think I've seen trousers with any other type of fastening

LittleOwl153 · 21/09/2018 21:21

If you can, cut a couple of holes one either side, thread through the button hole elastic and stick in a couple of buttons. You can the adjust to him being able to pull up and sew up the catch.

PaddysMarket · 21/09/2018 21:26

When my DS started school last year I made sure the trousers didn't have the hook. My DD started this year but I didn't give her trousers a thought and she can't undo the button, of all the items I bought the best skirt was from Lidl so I make sure she wears that on gym day and not the pinafore that she can't get off or the skirts with zips that she also struggles with.

Creeper8 · 21/09/2018 21:27

my boys have never had an isssue. one is 6 onee is 4. not been a pr

Creeper8 · 21/09/2018 21:28

*problem

LooksBetterWithAFilter · 21/09/2018 21:29

Y boys have just pulled them down. If you pull the adjustable waist in they should effectively just become a pair of trousers with an elasticated wait and he won’t need to unfasten them..

Foodylicious · 21/09/2018 21:31

I did the same and only realised when labelling them.
Found some 'pull on' ones in matalan.
They are great. No zip, button or clip.
Oh and the gave the adjustable waist elastic too.

bangourvillagebesttimeever · 21/09/2018 21:32

Well the only problem I had was taking my DS to his pre school nursery on his first day in a pair of jeans and a t shirt....hmm missed the uniform bit. Big mummy fail and mad rush for uniform. We were advised to get stretchy band trousers which were actually difficult to find.

Yabbers · 21/09/2018 21:34

Agree with the Velcro comment. I’ve done that with DD’s uniform as she can’t do buttons or poppers. Easy to do too, even with my terrible skills.

Zintox · 21/09/2018 21:39

Either add Velcro or a button with an elastic loop instead of a buttonhole. He should be able to manage those.

BangingOn · 21/09/2018 21:40

I’m a year in and still can’t get the right fit of trousers, even those with an adjustable waist don’t work on DS. Either they slide down and show his pants or he struggles to get them down quickly enough when needed. I’d love to find some fully elasicated school trousers.

Sweets123 · 21/09/2018 21:41

You can get elastic belts on amazon then he can just pull them up/down without undoing them if the waist band is big enough.
That's what we do and it works fine was suggested by another poster on MN

FunkyHeroCat · 21/09/2018 21:43

M&S do easy fastening ones which are great if they struggle www.marksandspencer.com/2-pack-boys-trousers-with-crease-resistant/p/p60105305?image=SD_04_T76_3625_Y0_X_EC_90&color=BLACK&prevPage=plp

I work in a school, so can confirm that you are not the only parent who has made this mistake.
