Discounts for public service employees

Had a fb message earlier today saying that my kid's swimming teacher would be giving discounted prices for his swimming lessons for kids of police officers.

(Don't know what level of discount.)

He said that he hoped that in time he'd be able to extend this discount to NHS workers too.

I'm neither.

I understand police/BHS workers' job are fucking tough and that the annual pay increase is abominable. Along with questionable pensions, benefits compared to the past etc.

Is this a new thing? Do we now normally discount for public sector employees?

Not goady - not particularly bothered either way but genuinally want views.

He's on a public fb page. Noticed he's had at least 20 messages today from non clients saying they'd like to take up his offer. Great business advertising if nothing else!

What you think? Sorry if done before.

So why not make it open to anyone who is willing to pay to sign up?

Why not ask them this question? If you want to see change, you have to suggest it, not just moan about the way other people have it. Or you could make unfounded generalisations on chat forums.

I think it all probably evens out in the end. Private sector employees have some benefits public sector employees can't access. And vice versa.

Sorry, yes CSSC card is £3.95 a month. With it you can also get discounts on shopping, cinema tickets, days out and English Heritage (up to two adults and six kids included!)

My husband and stepson get military discounts. Some businesses offer them as appreciation of their putting their lives at risk for their country.

The free museum passes and 40% off Pizza Express definitely make up for the 9 months away on deployment/weekend working/17 hour days Hmm

Most people, whichever sector they are in, can look at discount codes online anyway.

I can't believe people are "jealous" of this discount. Come join me in my public sector role if you like... you get to do a very in depth, mentally challenging, job on behalf of other employees for less than half of their salary.

EmpressJewel · 23/09/2018 23:10

The cssc does allow you to join on the back of someone you know who is a member.

Haggishaggispudding · 24/09/2018 12:21

Shallishanti123 That’s not unique to the public sector Hmm

I work in law enforcement and get a blue light card discount. To pp who said 'why should an office worker get a discount?' - well why shouldn't they? It doesn't bother me that some office workers get the same discount as me. It's a shame that people resent other for getting discounts. What difference does it make to you? Everyone deserves perks in life. I know people who work in private sector in offices who get free private healthcare, free gym memberships, and don't forget that a lot of the time they have money paid in to things like Christmas dos and incentives etc! You can't do that with public money.
