Discounts for public service employees

Doonewanker · 21/09/2018 20:48

Had a fb message earlier today saying that my kid's swimming teacher would be giving discounted prices for his swimming lessons for kids of police officers.

(Don't know what level of discount.)

He said that he hoped that in time he'd be able to extend this discount to NHS workers too.

I'm neither.

I understand police/BHS workers' job are fucking tough and that the annual pay increase is abominable. Along with questionable pensions, benefits compared to the past etc.

Is this a new thing? Do we now normally discount for public sector employees?

Not goady - not particularly bothered either way but genuinally want views.

He's on a public fb page. Noticed he's had at least 20 messages today from non clients saying they'd like to take up his offer. Great business advertising if nothing else!

What you think? Sorry if done before.

My dh was in the military and gets a discount in some places too. He never bothers to ask or research where is discounted, he doesn’t feel he deserves it, but I think that if a company is offering a discount we might as well take them up on it.

demotedreally · 21/09/2018 21:29

Are police officers civil servants happy? I think they are servants of the crown. But they are not "under" local authorities, not that I understand what you mean by that.

Public service covers it fine I think.

FunkyHeroCat · 21/09/2018 21:35

Yes, NHS workers get discounts in a lot of places (usually around 5-10%, sometimes a bit more). If we sign up to a scheme (NHS discounts) we can get more, but usually need to send away for vouchers to get them. Nandos is one of the best because it's 20% and you don't need to send away, just show your ID.

I've had discounts (which they call a corporate discount, they also give the same negotiated discount to workers from larger companies) at kids summer camps, of 10%, and sometimes they also give you extended hours for free eg at Camp Beaumont.

Shoezone give money off work shoes over £20 (15% I think) for NHS. They were dc school shoes and I didn’t even ask they just spotted my card.

hollieberrie · 21/09/2018 21:38

My girlfriend works for the NHS and we love the Nandos discount Grin

HoleyCoMoley · 21/09/2018 21:40

I joined the n.h.s. Discount.scheme and get money off holidays. N.h.s. Work sites usually state the discount schemes available but you just join up online for free.

David Lloyd do an amazing NHS discount.

MulticolourMophead · 21/09/2018 21:41

I work in local government, and we do get discounts. And in many cases, this isn't free. A lot of councils have contracts with companies who can arrange staff benefits, ie discounts, as a way of providing some sort of feel good reward to staff when they can't afford to give pay rises. The discounts contracts cost far, far less than an across the board pay rise.

BikeRunSki · 21/09/2018 21:42

Public sector - not blue light, although we are Cat1 responders in certain circumstances.

15-20% off in many outdoory shops
Used to get 25% off at Orange and Vodafone
£5 off a month gym membership
Many others inc discounted cinema tickets and free entry to English Heritage and Cadw sites via Civil Service Social Club (£4/month).

My OH is an Army combat veteran and has a Defence Discount Card....not massive savings but every little helps.
If you or any family members are veterans it's worth them getting one

SpoonBender · 21/09/2018 21:47

50% of Domino pizzas when collecting!

Unhomme · 21/09/2018 21:48

I'm a civil servant and member of CSSC. All public servants, including local authority staff, can join and it offers lots of leisure access ad well as discounts.

Doonewanker · 21/09/2018 21:49

Bit jealous here!

Glad this thread is bringing discounts to attention of workers who can get it.

Enjoy!

spoon I was about to say I can't believe no one has mentioned dominos!

skippy67 · 21/09/2018 21:53

HMRC worker here. I get various discounts including 20% off EE contracts.

FunSponges · 21/09/2018 21:58

I have a Blue Light Card. Got excellent deal with Sky.

We also had access to a Legoland weekend that was for forces and blue light card holders only. Unfortunately I didn't look into it quickly enough and it's sold out. Prices were insane!

Happygummibear · 21/09/2018 22:09

I have been in local government (council) for 11 years and never told we can join ant schemes. Our council did have a benefits scheme but was never usually any better than using a cashback site.

If you look up civil servants police are attached to the local government but not governed by them.

I just wanted to clarify that local government workers aren't entitled to the same benefits as nhs/police/army I.e civil servants.

There has always been a "thing" that public think local government staff get paid shed loads and get extra benefits for doing nothing. (Only some local gov staff are like that Wink )

Clevs · 21/09/2018 22:11

I got 20% off a Red Letter Day with my Blue Light Card so it more than paid for itself the first time I used it.

I regularly get 10% off at Hotel Chocolat too just by showing my NHS ID.

Haggishaggispudding · 21/09/2018 22:13

Yep, common. I don’t understand why it’s a thing though. Salary scales and pensions in the public sector are better than in private. I just don’t get it 🤷🏻‍♀️ Doctors get discounts?!

TittyGolightly · 21/09/2018 22:17

Salary scales and pensions in the public sector are better than in private

Eh?

curlykaren · 21/09/2018 22:19

My mum was a pharmacy assistant and even she got the discount perks, as above, Nandos are awesome in this regard.

Haggishaggispudding · 21/09/2018 22:35

It doesn’t take much to google salary scales or pension contributions. Terms and conditions are definetly more favourable with local government than anywhere else I’ve ever worked.

Mummyshark2018 · 21/09/2018 22:38

This is good to know!

jcyclops · 21/09/2018 22:53

I hope the discounts are given to volunteers such as Mountain Rescue and RNLI etc.

FrangipaniBlue · 21/09/2018 23:04

Very common.

One of my local gyms lets anyone in the armed forces train there for free when they're home on leave!
