AIBU to be irked by this?

I just watched an Amazon Echo advert with Alexa kindly reminding a SAHD that,
"Laura says the teething ring is in the freezer",
"Laura scheduled a play date for 3pm" and finally,
"Laura loves you and you're doing a great job".

This poor clueless 'ickle man having to have his missus leave instructions and praise programmed onto a device so he can look after his own child.

How nice he was babysitting for her eh? She's so lucky that her man will do her job right?

My husband would give me the side eye and ask if I was on drugs if I treated him like that when looking after his own children!
And I'd be wondering what the hell I was thinking when choosing to settle down with someone as useless as Peppa Pig's Daddy Pig.

Yes, I had the same reaction when I saw the ad. Poor feckless man can't be trusted to look after his own child. Utter nonsense and an offensive stereotype.

I certainly didn't see it like that.

It’s bad how they are portraying the man but from a woman’s perspective this just ties us more into that fucking role of being expected to bear the emotional load. This ad is far more damaging to women than men. I’m off to officially complain!

That's kind of what I was thinking Hideandgo. It's doing us no favours at all. Funnily enough, I am the stereotypical SAHM. I cook all the dinners and I do sort a lot of stuff out but it's only because I want to. And no way would I be leaving DH instructions like that when he's home with the kids.

I didn't see this one that way. Our house is a fairly good partnership, emotional load probably more mine than his but other than that pretty much 50/50. I saw that ad and immediately thoughts having a few Alexa reminders for him would be useful. As 50/50 as he is, his memory is shocking. If I don't add DD's appointments to his outlook calendar, he'd forget them. That doesn't make him weak or useless or a babysitter, it just makes him a bloke with a bad memory.

And I often tell him he is doing a great job as a dad. He also often tells me I am doing a great job as a mum.

Would it have been a good advert if they had done a role reversal? I think so. Is this particular advert fairly representative of many first time families, even those with a pretty well shared workload? Absolutely.

But how would he manage if YOU also had 'a bad memory'? Or if he were a lone parent?

I fucking hate this crap. It just reinforces the idea that women sort everything out and men need looking after and ha ha, isn't that funny and adorable and a little bit exasperating.

It is interesting reading the YouTube comments as the male posts are not happy being made the fool of either, and oh yeah Laura must be banging someone else.

And the advert isn't just about appointment, it's about little things like where the teething ring is. If she has time to programme Alexa, surely she has time just to tell her husband where the thing is? Surely he could manage to remember that for a few hours?

Hahaha, my DH once scheduled a play date for a time when he was at work and I was with DS and DD. I hit the roof, told him that I wasn't his nanny and he had no right to schedule my time for me and made him phone the other parent, apologise and cancel.

DH can manage to forget something I've told him within minutes.

Whoever makes the appointments in this house outside them on the calendar. That's just common sense. But I wouldn't keep reminding my DH or put the appointments he has made onto the calendar (unless a new calendar and I was transfering things across).

My DH has a shocking memory but I don't baby him. He knows to write it down himself. Like an adult should do.

The only reason I could see the wife putting the reminder into Alexa is if she was the one who booked the appointment and put it in straight after. Everything else is bad for men and women.
