To pay extra to fly on a certain plane

I am a bit of an odd flyer, love it and hate it in equal measure
I could probably save £40-£50 by flying with BA, but it's on an old aircraft and that'll increase my anxiety

AIBU to pay a little more to fly Virgin on the 787

Btw am lone parent so £50 not exactly a drop in the ocean but I think it's worth it

just make sure the 787 is flying as having loads of problems with deliveries on them and the manchester virgin fleet are still very old

and YABU - theres this wonderful thing called maintenance, and no pilot i know would put themselves at risk

MozzchopsThirty · 19/09/2018 16:43

My ex was aircraft maintenance for BA so I know enough about it
I'm not making a choice based on pretty colours

araiwa · 19/09/2018 16:54

So why post here?. Ask your ex

PatriciaHolm · 19/09/2018 16:56

Well, its up to you, but bear in mind planes can and do next mixed around so there's no guarantee you'll end up on it anyway...

Uncreative · 19/09/2018 16:57

I’d pay £50 just to avoid BA so YANBU.

Angrybird345 · 19/09/2018 17:07

But they change planes all the time so ... until you sit on it, the plane is guaranteed.

Angrybird345 · 19/09/2018 17:07

Is NOT guaranteed

MozzchopsThirty · 19/09/2018 17:12

@araiwa thanks that's helpful!

Yes I know it's not guaranteed but unless there's a maintenance issue they're unlikely to change

I pay extra to fly certain airlines because it’s a nicer experience- if you’ve got the money and want to do it, then why not?

MardAsSnails · 19/09/2018 17:32

I definitely do different flights to ensure I get dreamliners. Vastly different experience, and I know its possibly just hype, but I definitely don't feel as jet lagged afterwards

desertmum · 19/09/2018 17:33

Go for it if you can afford it. I pay extra for certain airlines, and I also choose my flights based on whether I can get the seats I want. Makes me happier when flying!

WelcomeToShootingStars · 19/09/2018 17:34

I pay more to fly with airlines I prefer, it's no different to that really.

I'd pay it just to avoid BA

PattiStanger · 19/09/2018 17:36

Surely you know your own situation better than strangers, you don't need our permission , if you think it's the right thing to do then do it.

MozzchopsThirty · 19/09/2018 17:37

GrinGrin that people actively avoid BA
I agree they are hideous, I've flown business and first with them and still think they're shit

PestoSurfissimos · 19/09/2018 17:40

Just bear in mind that the equipment can be changed up until the very last minute. Also be aware that Virgin have been using ex Air Berlin A330-200’s to fill in for their Dreamliners due to the problems they have with their engines. So you’re definitely not guaranteed a Boeing 787 even if currently your intended flights have that showing as the aircraft type.

PestoSurfissimos · 19/09/2018 17:43

I would just add that I also pay to avoid BA flights and way prefer the Virgin experience.

PaintedHorizons · 19/09/2018 17:45

So your ex is in the business and you "know what you are talking about", (pillow talk or you too were in the business?), so why ask the question and be snippy with people who take the trouble to answer?

MozzchopsThirty · 19/09/2018 17:53

Dear god what has happened to MN
My reply was to the first poster

OP posts:
MozzchopsThirty · 19/09/2018 17:54

Who posted about maintenance and I replied that I know about maintenance

Which was nothing to do with my original post

OP posts:
PestoSurfissimos · 19/09/2018 17:59

So you know about the Trent engine problems presumably? And how the aircraft are being taken out of service to be sorted.

MozzchopsThirty · 19/09/2018 18:04

Have you been in on your own all day??
It's not a competition 🙄

OP posts:
CrisisCrunchie · 19/09/2018 18:14

I’d choose Virgin every day and twice on Sunday! I have yet to have a good flight with BA 🤨

MozzchopsThirty · 19/09/2018 18:17

I've just re looked at the flights
There's £11 in it
Choice of the airbus A330 virgin
Or the 747 BA

don't like either aircraft

OP posts:
MozzchopsThirty · 19/09/2018 18:25

Virgin is to EWR
BA to JFK

PestoSurfissimos · 19/09/2018 18:38

Virgin Mozzy, you know it makes sense Grin
