To pay extra to fly on a certain plane

MozzchopsThirty · 19/09/2018 16:36

I am a bit of an odd flyer, love it and hate it in equal measure
I could probably save £40-£50 by flying with BA, but it's on an old aircraft and that'll increase my anxiety

AIBU to pay a little more to fly Virgin on the 787

Btw am lone parent so £50 not exactly a drop in the ocean but I think it's worth it

Having flown on the ex air Berlin flight for. Sfo to man I’d avoid like the plague. Awful.

NicoAndTheNiners · 19/09/2018 18:43

I saw some flight crash documentary once and a pilot said “if it ain’t Boeing I’m not going”. Isn’t it airbuses which had the problems like the AirFrance flight? The documentary I saw for that said it was an issue with the plane which confused the pilots and wouldn’t have happened with a different plane.

PestoSurfissimos · 19/09/2018 18:45

I’ve just checked & today’s Virgin flight from LHR to EWR is being operated by one of their original A330-300’s. So, NOT an ex-Berlin airplane.

NicoAndTheNiners · 19/09/2018 18:46

EWR has the airtrain to get into Manhattan, I haven’t used it but I hear it’s a better transfer than from jfk.

Chanelprincess · 19/09/2018 18:48

I much prefer Virgin to BA so would happily pay the extra.

PestoSurfissimos · 19/09/2018 18:49

I’ve used both EWR & JFK but prefer Newark.

MozzchopsThirty · 19/09/2018 18:54

Right then I'll go for the EWR with virgin then

Thank you to all the posters who were helpful 😊

I don't mind airbus or Boeing but the BA 747's are getting old and although well maintained they're not as intelligent as newer planes like 777, 787 or airbus

All the pilots in my family quite happily fly on whatever plane happens to be in operation that day.

MongerTruffle · 19/09/2018 19:35

I would pay extra to fly on a more beautiful, modern plane like the 787, 747-8 or A380. It has nothing to do with safety.

BadLad · 20/09/2018 00:10

You can read the black box transcript of its final moments here.

Terrifying stuff

I pay more to fly with airlines that I like /think are safest

hadenough · 20/09/2018 03:58

787's in economy are hell. Far too squashed and lacking in space, even on airlines like Qatar.

itsstillhotinperth · 20/09/2018 04:00

Wink YABU - my 14yr old son who is learning to fly and an aircraft obsessive will tell you that the 747 is the greatest plane ever to have been built and we should all take every opportunity to fly on them as they will be obsolete in a very few number of years. And you might get a seat on the upper deck!! When we visit UK from Oz, he makes us go to Manchester Airport to plane spot and be there for the landing and take off of the 747's in particular! We even went from Perth to Sydney recently because Qantas had put the 747 on the route for a while whilst they are training pilots on the Dreamliner. Disclaimer - we also paid more to fly direct Perth to London on the Dreamliner for the experience... so paying more is also good to fly the aircraft you want to fly on Grin

Nancydrawn · 20/09/2018 04:31

Yes, always EWR. You can take the shuttle to Amtrak or NJ transit in, which is a far nicer way to travel to NYC than a cab (or even a private car, during rush hour) from JFK. The train links are tenuous, at best, from the latter--you can do the LIRR transfer, but it's much more complicated.

youdialwetile · 20/09/2018 04:35

I'd take a vintage BA 747-400 any day! Agree with PPs son - one day we will all look back and realise how awesome they were (ps. I already think they are awesome).

PollyFlinderz · 20/09/2018 04:40

It’s a very different situation with the Trent engines and one documentary is only one documentary.

MozzchopsThirty · 20/09/2018 09:21

Yes my ex used to say the same he worked 747 and 777
He always used to say '4 engines are always better than 2' and that the 747 was 'queen of the sky'

However a lot of the BA 747 fleet are old and in terms of technology a 747 is like driving an old ford Granada where you have to use the choke 🤣

Ah, such a beautiful aircraft for the pilots to fly! Agree the cabin might be a bit old though Grin

serbska · 20/09/2018 10:20

My ex was aircraft maintenance for BA so I know enough about it

Then what a totally pointless post. You know more than we do, do that you like with your money. I couldn't care less what you spend your £50 on.

prettypossums · 20/09/2018 10:23

I flew Virgin to the States a few weeks ago & was shocked at the decrepit state of the plane

MarthasGinYard · 20/09/2018 10:23

My DH

Has one of those T shirts

And wears it Blush

MozzchopsThirty · 20/09/2018 10:38

@serbska well aren't you a treat
If you read rather than being vicious I was responding to a post about maintenance

@MarthasGinYard what tshirt???Smile
