Truly generous freecycle posters

We are getting rid of some furniture so I went to my (new) local freecycle group and I have seen this, aren't some people truly generous?

groups.freecycle.org/group/SuttonUK/posts/68449544/Bags%20of%20turf%20and%20dirt%20

I had to read it twice. AIBU to think it shouldn't be allowed to post these kind of things?

You're not a gardener obviously OP.

lottiegarbanzo · 19/09/2018 14:54

I don't understand. That will be useful to someone.

Racecardriver · 19/09/2018 14:55

Well I mean I have gone out a bought bags of dirt before. What is your problem?

ginnybag · 19/09/2018 14:55

Not sure what the issue is? I mean, I've seen some bonkers things on our local pages, but this seems ok.

A year ago, I would have jumped for this. We were in the middle of completely overhauling a huge plot of land at the back of a local church/community centre, and had very little budget. Topsoil, turf and compost all cost - this is free.

OrangeSunsets · 19/09/2018 14:56

What’s wrong with it? Some people may need it to level out ground before turfing. Or to compost, or to fill in holes.

3boysandabump · 19/09/2018 14:56

I could do with that right now for my garden. Don't see the problem. They've even bagged it up for you

ToadOfSadness · 19/09/2018 14:57

What is the problem?

People do use these things for their garden or allotment. Also have seen requests of old carpet which is used for weed control. I use it myself. A bag o dirt/soil would be useful here right now as we have a gap where the neighbour has put a new fence in and have lost 6" of earth from the edge.

What I did object to was some dickhead asking for an invitation to Christmas dinner, which was OK, but then they also asked for holidays and cars and all kinds of things, until I reported them.

Alpacanorange · 19/09/2018 14:57

One man’s trash is another man’s treasure.

piscis · 19/09/2018 14:57

Not a gardener and haven't got a clue about gardening obviously!! Blush

Sorry for typos.

frogsoup · 19/09/2018 14:58

You really can't muster the imagination to see how and why free soil and turf might be useful to someone? Crikey.

MissusGeneHunt · 19/09/2018 14:58

I'm lost. What's the (non) issue?

SavoyCabbage · 19/09/2018 15:02

I've just paid £50 for a mini skip of soil as I have been looking for free stuff for a few weeks to no avail.

I've just moved and the borders are so shallow there is a gap under the fence and our dog can get underneath. And I want to actually plant stuff.

Oysterbabe · 19/09/2018 15:03

I could really do with some bags of soil tbh.

CoughLaughFart · 19/09/2018 15:06

You know Freecycle is designed for people OFFERING things for free, right? None of them will hold a gun to your head and force you to take it.

It would be no use to me, but that doesn’t mean I would think it’s weird to offer it around. Seemingly useless items being offered would annoy me a damn sight less than the people who ask me where I’ll
deliver to (clue: it’s free, so nowhere).

piscis · 19/09/2018 15:08

Nope. Never needed that in my whole life. When I read soil and turf sounds better though, maybe it is down to the use of the word "dirt" that got me [shocked] (english not being my first language).
There is no need to be sarcastic, I am sure you are ignorant of other things that other people find really obvious. But anyway, my own fault for posting on AIBU Smile

Twotailed · 19/09/2018 15:11

Haha, bless you OP. I’ve purchase many a bag of dirt in my time! Don’t know why you’re getting so much flak though, people are so needlessly rude sometimes!

Strugglingtodomybest · 19/09/2018 15:13

Pot. Kettle. Black. Grin

Haireverywhere · 19/09/2018 15:18

I could do with that at the moment too.

clarabellski · 19/09/2018 15:25

we regularly get free wood and soil from freecycle & gumtree (and offer it too!)

I did see a 'wanted' post from someone on freecycle a while ago listing a whole load of different furniture items and stipulating in capital letters MUST BE DELIVERED

Wondered if they were successful....

BoudicasBoudoir · 19/09/2018 15:25

Dirt is not the normal UK word for soil, so YANBU to think that people might be a little confused. Maybe.

Deux · 19/09/2018 15:29

Clearly this is a case of one person's rubbish is someone else's treasure.

What baffles me is that just because you don’t know how these items could be used - in a garden - that you were so judgey about it. Some times it's best to keep quiet.

Dirt = soil ... digging around in the dirt.

CoughLaughFart · 19/09/2018 15:32

There is no need to be sarcastic

You mean such as titling a thread ‘Truly generous people on Freecycle’?

DingDongDenny · 19/09/2018 15:32

If it was our area I'd have it. I spent a fortune on soil to fill a hole in my garden

Rudgie47 · 19/09/2018 15:39

YABU OP, I had to pay around £45.00 for a big bag of soil I think it was 1/4 ton and to get it delivered.
That offered will be snapped up.
