Would you buy this 2nd hand

Hi all,
Currently pregnant with my first baby and only have 15 weeks left. My husband has just lost his job so I am looking for cheaper alternatives to everything we originally had on our list to buy for the baby.

I had my heart set on a Chicco Next to me crib, they are about £150-200 brand new. I have found one 2nd hand for £100 the seller says that it’s hardly used. What are your thoughts on 2nd hand cribs? Is it a total no-go?

I would say it’s fine, you can give it a good clean and just buy new sheets for it.

I'd buy one 2nd hand but buy a new mattress according to SIDS guidelines.

That being said, if they're £150-200 new then I wouldn't buy a 2nd hand one for £100 as that seems very steep. Keep an eye open for a cheaper one or negotiate with the seller.

I was given a next to me by a friend, and am about to pass it on to another friend. As long as yougot a new mattress i don't see a problem.

£100 is too much for that used imo, I wouldn't pay more than £80 and we got ours for £60 I think.

Buy a new mattress for it and crack on. Even if it wasn't used the mattress that comes with that crib is just awful.

Second hand is fine. It's normal to want all new with your first. Babies don't really damage anything just put your own fresh sheets on

Just buy a new mattress.

Check out the price for a new mattress before comitting to it. If the mattress is pricey it might be 6 and 2 3s whether you buy second hand or new.

Ive looked at next to me previously but have decided on the hyde crib from mothercare for a fraction of the price. Just doesnt seem worth the money to me.

I was in the same situation as you OP, 30 weeks pregnant with DS1 and husband was made redundant. Very unnerving time. Agree with the others, price is still high

I got mine on Shpock for £40 and brought a Mattress topper as mattress that comes with it is queit hard. I got loads of baby bargains on Shpock just made sure to wash them all

To be honest I would ask yourself if you really need it at all! With my first I spent loads of money on everything and found I didn't need half the stuff I bought. Big age gap with 2nd so I had to get everything again, and I haven't bought anywhere near as much this time.
With my second I bought a compact cot and mattress combo for £55. It's quite small so had it next to my bed at night and moved it to the side in the day time. It's great, does the job and is very sturdy and they can sleep in it until they are 1.

I would buy it second hand but agree it sounds expensive.

We have one and our baby could shuffle about by 10/11 weeks so after she shuffled into the bed one night we had to use it with the side up.

I loved it for those ten weeks but now it is just used as a normal cot it isn’t worth the money. If I did things again I would get a normal cot and take the side off.

Should add you can get the compact cot and mattress from asda. I understand the next to me is only meant to be used for 6 months so might not be the best option if money s tight

I bought a second hand one for £75 and a new mattress from amazing for £12. All the material comes off so I put I through the washing machine and it is as good as new.

That price seems very high, and buying a new mattress will bump it up. If you are looking around that price have you seen the babylo cozi sleeper. Around £115 from Amazon, and obviously will be brand new

I love buying second hand, and I’m all for it. However, if you’re after a bedside crib, you can get new ones for less than £100, so I’d much rather buy a new one because £100 plus a new mattress for it (£30 last time I looked on amazon) is pretty dear.

If you’ve got your heart set on a next to me crib I’d hold out for a cheaper one, but I found this which looks pretty similar to the next to me crib:

Buy a normal cot and take the side off. You raise the cot up to make it flush with your bed and then secure around your bed. Chicco will only last max 6 months this way your cot will last longer. Google ikea bedside cot hack. I did this with both my kids.

Thank you all! Lots of great advice and lots to be looking into! I literally have no idea where to start and no idea how much I am likely to need to spend so it’s great to hear from others x

Just looked on shpock and there are loads of next to me cribs for around £50, most look in really good condition (and state this as well).

I wouldn't have a problem with buying one second hand, but I would buy a new mattress and I wouldn't pay £100 especially as you can buy them brand new for £180.

If you have the space in your room, buy a secondhand cotbed and then you won't need to change it or buy more bedding for it for up to 3/4 years.

Go for it... but can I recommend a snuzpod, it’s less bulky, wooden and sturdier. Someone said do you really need one - I am on baby number 3 and a bedside crib was the best thing we have bought for any of the babies. We didn’t even use it with the side down but it was just so great not having to get out of bed during the winter nights.

I sold my snuzpod for £80 so I do feel you are overpaying a little.

They recommend a new mattress but my baby slept in a sleepyhead in the snuzpod so the person who bought mine didn’t deem it necessary.
