Would you buy this 2nd hand

Hi all,
Currently pregnant with my first baby and only have 15 weeks left. My husband has just lost his job so I am looking for cheaper alternatives to everything we originally had on our list to buy for the baby.

I had my heart set on a Chicco Next to me crib, they are about £150-200 brand new. I have found one 2nd hand for £100 the seller says that it’s hardly used. What are your thoughts on 2nd hand cribs? Is it a total no-go?

Kpo58 idea is brilliant, wish I’d thought of it for my DTs. I bought a next to me crib which was used for 8 weeks before they outgrew it and they went in their own beds Confused

Treaclepie19 · 18/09/2018 13:43

With the new mattress you're likely to be reaching new price for that so I wouldn't.

AllThatTalks · 18/09/2018 18:06

@MrsXx4, if you did want to get a new one they have a voucher discount code if you download the 'Bounty' app. The code reduces the price to £124 new so only a little more than the second hand one you've found☺ some other good suggestions above though so might not be needed now.

Congrats on your pregnancy👶 x

pumpkinyael · 18/09/2018 18:09

I would buy it second hand but buy a new mattress.

100 seems a bit much for a crib that's 150-200, tbh... I think I'd try to negotiate a better price.

SplishSplashSplosh · 18/09/2018 18:19

I also agree with KPO58 about getting a cot bed. We bought a Next to Me with my second daughter and wish we hadn't bothered. Aside from the fact she was a big baby and outgrew it very quickly, it is now very hard to get her to sleep on her own and she very rarely slept all night in it (my friend had the same problem). She's 2.5 now and I she's only slept one whole night in her own bed. We have had to move her bed between ours and the wall because she only wants to sleep next to us.

My first daughter slept in her cot from the beginning and she was super easy.

Easylay · 18/09/2018 18:43

I had second hand for all mine and they survived it

garethsouthgatesmrs · 18/09/2018 18:53

Op I bought this crib last year for my dd. We got it from Very for i think £180 but it was interest free for a year so we've just been paying £15per month. They often do new cuatomer discounts as well. We looked at second hand ones but actually when we have finished having babies we will probably sell it on eBay and get £80/100 for it and we barely noticed the cost.

It's been worth its weight in gold, I would definitely recommend it .

garethsouthgatesmrs · 18/09/2018 18:58

If you go for second hand make sure you have an up to date manual and a new mattress. There are quite important safety instructions about setting it up correctly.

Enjoy this special time with your baby. I loved holding her hand in the night and having her right next to me.

8 weeks! Mine was in it for 7 months. She is a bit below average size but not tiny at all.

LittleRen · 18/09/2018 21:14

My baby was 9lb 8 when born and has been much bigger than average for his age, he was in the snuzpod until 5 months until he went into his room and could have gone another two or three months... I’m amazed so many babies out grew theirs. Maybe that’s the difference between next to me and snuzpod.

More2Fly · 18/09/2018 21:18

I bought a ChiccoNext2me for £60 in perfect condition. You only use it for 6 months so it didn't get much ware and tear. DD loves it! Wouldn't sleep in Moses basket 😂

londonrach · 18/09/2018 21:27

They sell for £60 second hand and nothing wrong with buying this second hand but new mattress and make sure not been in a smokers house

Chattycat78 · 18/09/2018 21:32

I sold my snuzpod recently for 75 quid. Don’t pay 100! And would recommend a snuzpod too.

MrsXx4 · 19/09/2018 13:04

Thanks everyone! I had a look at renting one but couldn’t seem to find any information on it! I don’t think I have room to take the side off a cot plus I live in a town house and my bedroom and baby’s room are on different floors with tight spiral stair cases so wanted something more lightweightish to carry up and down.

I downloaded Shpock- thank you to the pp suggestion! I got a next to me crib for £40 and managed to get all of my nursery furniture (cot, wardrobe and changing table) for £200 all in good condition and I’m collecting it this afternoon!! So excited! And it’s all mamas & papas range!

It’s crazy how things change in circumstances so suddenly, but here we are! And I am still just as excited!

Totally agree with lots of the other posters...it's not worth £100 second hand but if you do go second hand just get a new mattress from Chico. We have one and just love it!

PinkHeart5914 · 19/09/2018 13:09

You must buy a new mattress

Make sure the cot absolutely comes from a smoke free home!

Don’t pay £100 too high for used imo

El1995 · 19/09/2018 13:27

I haven't bought one of those but bought a second hand cot and cot mattress, came in plastic covering and hardly used, so far so good :-)

Angrybird345 · 19/09/2018 13:32

Yes but buy a new mattress!

pineappple · 19/09/2018 13:37

I recently bought a 2nd hand one off Facebook market place for £50, but I bought a brand new mattress online (£15 - not a branded chicco one). I found the actual crib easy to completely strip to bits and put all fabric parts in the washing machine and then disinfected the metal frame. Very glad I did, it's come up looking brand new and saved quite a bit of money!

EssentialHummus · 19/09/2018 13:48

Quite a lot of money! We had the Ikea Gulliver cot where you can remove the side and put it up against your bed, and it can then be lowered (with the side up), and then used as a toddler bed - so you’re sorted for then next 3-4 years. It was £60 new. Highly recommended.

GiraffeObsessedBaby · 19/09/2018 14:15

Our cot is on its 5/6th home. Just gave it a clean and a new mattress.

But I wouldn't pay £100 for it. Look for a cheaper one as by the time you've bought a mattress it's not that much cheaper.

onewayoflife · 19/09/2018 14:19

Glad you found one. £40 is great!
It would cost way more than that to rent one (which would be second hand anyway) and you can sell it after as well. You'll probably get almost all your money back!

I love Shpock - loads of bargains as you've discovered.
