AIBU not to upgrade my iPhone?

PigPigPiggy · 06/09/2018 20:27

I recently broke my iPhone SE which was less than a year old. Insurance has covered the amount needed to re-buy the exact same phone, but I am wondering whether to upgrade to a slightly newer generation. I have just about enough money to stretch to an iPhone 7 instead - especially if prices drop when the new models are released on the 12th - but I'm not sure if it's worth it?!
From what I have seen, the only advantage of the 7 is water resistance. No other improvements like camera or battery... In fact I can't see a big difference until you get to the iPhone X.

Has anyone here upgraded from an SE to a 7 and loves it?

I suppose really I am wondering if IABU to re-buy a phone that Apple could easily make obsolete in another year or two...

i think one of the big differences is sizing. the 7 is bigger than the se, and so it depends on what you prefer

Bunbunbunny · 06/09/2018 20:36

How long do your phones normally last for? If two years might be worth getting the 7

ManyCrisps · 06/09/2018 20:41

There’s no point upgrading until after the 12th September.

Shezza71 · 06/09/2018 20:47

The problem with Apple phones is that as they become older they are no longer able to be compatible with software updates then the apps in your phone gradually stop functioning properly. My friend just broke her SE and put the SIM card into an older handset to find apps don't work. So I guess an upgrade to a newer handset may be better in terms of being able to update the software which is forever changing.

Thanks for the replies

Sleep One of my reasons originally for getting an SE was the smaller size - but phones seem to be getting bigger and bigger so I suppose I'll have to get used to it sooner or later!

Bunbun Usually around the two year mark, yeah. What makes you recommend the 7? Just the newer release date?

ManyCrisps yeah, I'm not planning on buying anything until after 12th, when hopefully there will be a price drop on the older generations

Not sure why there are no line breaks in my previous post. This is my first time posting so am probably doing something wrong!

Shezza yes, this has happened to me with past iphone handsets. suddenly becoming obsolete and half the apps i use unable to be downloaded! v annoying

that is looking like the only reason to upgrade - i suppose i'll just have to see whether the price difference between the two looks like it's worth it.

If you had not broke your phone would you be considering upgrading and for what reason?

I find that most of the time people upgrade their phone because they see ad/read upgrade features that sound amazing but little impact on day to day use of their phone.

MyDcAreMarvel · 06/09/2018 21:01

The SE is the 6s in a 5 caring so pointless upgrading just to a 7, you need and adapter for headphones as well which would be a pain.

MyDcAreMarvel · 06/09/2018 21:01

Casing .

chasinggarlic · 06/09/2018 21:03

No, you do not.

PurpleTigerLove · 06/09/2018 21:05

I’d upgrade in your position if I could. I have a 5s and it’s fine but if I needed a new phone
I’d get a newer model

Giantsquid · 06/09/2018 21:05

Yabu to think anyone cares whether you upgrade your phone or not.

PigPigPiggy · 06/09/2018 21:07

GiantSquid ha, i was waiting for that reply!

trust me, i know this is very much a first world problem

I love my se but with iPhones it’s slways worth having newer as it will support the OS updates for longer.

Shezza71 · 06/09/2018 21:10

I have an SE, like you liked it for the size and really not looking forward to having to upgrade it at all.

TitilatedOcelot · 06/09/2018 21:12

I love the size of my SE. Haven't upgraded yet as my SE still does all I want and I don't like the bigger handsets. Hoping the rumours of a new SE size phone are true.

PigPigPiggy · 06/09/2018 21:26

Like Purplecork says, if I hadn't broken my phone I wouldn't be thinking of upgrading. I was perfectly happy with the SE, which is why I am reluctant to spend the extra cash only for the assurance of software updates!

Titilated I didn't realise there might be a new smaller style being released! In that case I might hang onto another SE, save the cash and wait a year or two to upgrade to the new one.

Crashing garlic you do need a headphone adapter for an iphone 7.

starzig · 06/09/2018 21:39

Get a phone for £30 and keep the rest of the cash.

chasinggarlic · 07/09/2018 08:12

No. You do not.

Bunbunbunny · 07/09/2018 08:49

I need an earphone adapter for my iPhone 7 Plus. Reason I recommended the 7 as you should be able to use all the apps as I have a 6 for work but I can't use some apps. There is no point buying the latest one as there is only a few tweaks between each iPhone and you'll save money

WhirlyGigWhirlyGig · 07/09/2018 08:49

I replaced my SE with another SE. It's a good phone and doesn't require giant hands to hold it.

Padparadscha · 07/09/2018 09:05

I replaced my 5s with the 7 plus. Quite a jump in size, but honestly it’s easily the best phone I’ve had. I would keep a couple of things in mind if you do get an older model again. The updates might slow it down quicker and your version of the IOS may well soon run out. This would mean you couldn’t download new apps if your phone doesn’t support it. It’s the downside of new versions of high spec phones coming out every year, they find a way of making you upgrade.

chasinggarlic · 07/09/2018 09:21

I need an earphone adapter for my iPhone 7

But you don't. The iPhone is supplied with EarPods that fit. If you choose to use other sets then the adapter is provided.

The point I have been trying to make is that as a selling pro/con people can't say you NEED an adapter. You can however choose to use one.

The biggest problem I find is not being able to charge and listen.

espoleta · 07/09/2018 09:23

I did that upgrade and I much prefer the SE. My hands are just too small for the 7.
