AIBU not to upgrade my iPhone?

I recently broke my iPhone SE which was less than a year old. Insurance has covered the amount needed to re-buy the exact same phone, but I am wondering whether to upgrade to a slightly newer generation. I have just about enough money to stretch to an iPhone 7 instead - especially if prices drop when the new models are released on the 12th - but I'm not sure if it's worth it?!
From what I have seen, the only advantage of the 7 is water resistance. No other improvements like camera or battery... In fact I can't see a big difference until you get to the iPhone X.

Has anyone here upgraded from an SE to a 7 and loves it?

I suppose really I am wondering if IABU to re-buy a phone that Apple could easily make obsolete in another year or two...

The SE is the only small phone around. I've been hanging onto my Samsung galaxy mini note for 2.5 years as I didn't want a bigger phone. I've just changed to the SE as it is the only other small phone around. Why do phone manufacturers thing everyone wants a big phone? I don't!

Wait until after the announcement and then get the newest phone you like and can afford. Yes eventually phones do become unsupported, so IMO it’s always worth going for the most up to date handset you can manage.
I have an 8 and I really like it. If you can afford an 8 once the new handsets are revealed then I’d recommend. I was always very anti bigger screens, but it’s amazing how quickly you get used to typing etc. Now I’m not sure I’d go back.

If you are determined to stick to iPhones then I would upgrade to a newer version if you can and then try to make it last as long as possible. Apple deliberately make sure that newer system upgrades don't work properly on older phones, so if you have an iPhone that is, say, 3 or more years old and in perfect physical condition, you often find it is becoming unusable because Apple are trying to force you into upgrading.

Personally I would ditch the iPhone altogether and get something else. I have a Huawei P20 Lite which is way better than my old iPhone and a lot cheaper.

Oh another ‘warning’, there’s many rumours that the SE is about to be discontinued. If that’s the one you want, it may be sensible to get it sooner than later.

I'm really hoping Apple continue to bring out a smaller option, like the SE. I've got an SE and small hands, and it's perfect for my hands and fitting in the back pocket of my jeans. I haven't upgraded because there's not a small iPhone to upgrade to.

I've got an iPhone 7 with work and it's fine, not noticeably quicker than the SE, but of course much larger. You can get a pop socket for the back to help you hold and text if hand size is an issue.

I find my iPhones last 3 years+ before the apps/updates become an issue, so you've maybe got another year on the SE. I've just switched to a monthly rolling SIM only contract, incase I start having issues with the phone and apps. I'm hoping that by the time the SE is too old, Apple will have launched an SE2 or something.
