Cauliflower / broccoli stalks...?

Stickywhitelovepiss · 06/09/2018 19:27

My husband (pushing 60) is happy to eat cauliflower / broccoli florets but not stalks I eat them up instead. THEY TASTE JUST THE SAME.

Why is this? Can anyone identify? I just don't get this at all...

I won’t eat the stalks, now would anyone in my household cook them as far as I’m aware 😄

Sparklesocks · 06/09/2018 19:29

Is it a texture thing maybe?

Phosphorus · 06/09/2018 19:30

Did he grow up rich and buy fancy trimmed vegetables from M&S? Grin

I eat the stalks too.

GummyGoddess · 06/09/2018 19:30

I prefer the broccoli stalks to the florets! Much nicer, especially when roasted.

AdaColeman · 06/09/2018 19:30

Dice them up finely and put them in vegetable soups, he will never know. Wine

GreatDuckCookery6211 · 06/09/2018 19:31

Funnily enough I've just been telling DS to eat his broccoli stalks and he declared they taste like how is fart smells Shock

Stickywhitelovepiss · 06/09/2018 19:31

He grew up poor in the generation of boiling any form of veg to death.

Surely stalks are are nicer texture than florets though?

Love the stalks. The texture is different but better!

Twiceover · 06/09/2018 19:31

DD only eats the stalks. Leaves more if the good bit for the rest of usSmile.

DelilahandDaisy · 06/09/2018 19:32

Yes, stalks are a much nicer texture. I peel them and slice thinly in salads, the most delicious part!

delphguelph · 06/09/2018 19:32

Ugh.

ToftheB · 06/09/2018 19:32

They’re the best bit!

redsummershoes · 06/09/2018 19:33

I like the stalks.
they make great coleslaw.

LanguidLobster · 06/09/2018 19:36

High in calcium.

Indulge his little whims :)

Less waste, happy healthy husband (jury's out on fartage)

Cagliostro · 06/09/2018 19:40

I love them. My mum always used to give me the stumps when prepping the rest for cooking and I’d eat them raw. Still love it. Great for teething babies too

batshitbetty · 06/09/2018 19:41

Oh no, stalks are too hard 🤢

Phillipa12 · 06/09/2018 19:44

That was our treat on a sunday when mum was cooking the roast, broccoli and cauli stalks! My dc think i am weird eating them raw and dont believe me when i say they are the best bit.

Ekphrasis · 06/09/2018 19:46

Same as cag, we used to be given the stalks raw - v yummy.

Just remembered there's one out to chop up and eat!

Stickywhitelovepiss · 06/09/2018 19:51

Sooooo... We are overall agreed that DH is being unreasonable....??

I'm vindicated!

No, stalks too hard and chewy!

ahYerWill · 06/09/2018 20:22

They get eaten here too, but I do slice the tough outer off first.

CherryPavlova · 06/09/2018 20:25

I don’t usually cook cauliflower or broccoli stalks as I have a guilty secret of eating them raw during the meal preparation.

pinkdelight · 06/09/2018 20:25

Tenderstem I'll eat all of. Normally broccoli no to the stem thanks! That's why tenderstem has flourished, because lots of folks find normal stalks yuck!

NoFuckingRoomOnMyBroom · 06/09/2018 20:26

I also eat the stalks as does DH.

Normandy144 · 06/09/2018 20:28

The stalks are so nice and tender. You have to peel them first. Lovely flavour. I like them raw or chopped into a broccoli slaw.
