I bought my car a few months ago (first ever car, I have no idea about these things) the tax just ran out and I went to renew it online and its saying the vehicle details aren't valid. I have the green bit of the v5, but I don't think the last owner sent off the yellow bit... I'm not really sure what to do, I need my car to get to work and by the looks of it it takes up 4-6 weeks to get a new v5. I've tried to get in contact with the guy I bought it from but no luck. Does anyone know what I can do?

Ring the dvla and ask for a new one. You can tax the car using the green slip I thibk art art post office or used to be able to.

picklejimmy · 03/09/2018 12:38

It says I need an mot certificate as well, which the last owner also didn't give me. (I had no idea about any of this) but it says online that the mot runs out in October.

What did you use to tax it when you bought it? As you can’t transfer tax

picklejimmy · 03/09/2018 12:58

Yep, didn't know that until I looked up how to renew the tax yesterday. The guy told me it was taxed until September so thought it was fine. I just took his word for it. Stupid I know. And now I'm just stuck. I have to get to work, which is 2hrs on public transport and £20 a day.

If the mot is due next month just book it in early and get it done now only takes an hour

BigRedBoat · 03/09/2018 13:01

Tax doesn't transfer over anymore, you were supposed to tax it when you bought it. Has it definitely got a valid MOT certificate? You can check online I think.

picklejimmy · 03/09/2018 13:01

But I've got no tax so I can't get it there. Tax ran out saturday. Nearest mot place is 20 mins away. This'll teach me for not being organised.

Big red boat, I know that now Grin this is my first car and I just made assumptions I shouldn't have. The online DVLA thing says mot is valid till Sept 27th, can I just show the post office that do you think?

BigRedBoat · 03/09/2018 13:07

Sorry didn't mean to sound snarky 😆 can you tax it online? The post office are generally very strict on procedures and processes so don't know if they'd do it with just seeing the online confirmation.

Homemadearmy · 03/09/2018 13:09

You be tax didn’t run out Saturday, you’ve been driving around for months without tax. If the previous owner didn’t send off their part if the v5 he can be fined. You can be fined for driving without tax too.

You can drive without tax to a pre booked mot.

picklejimmy · 03/09/2018 13:09

I tried to do it online, but the online thing said the ref no was invalid and the vehicle was unrecognised. Been trying to get hold of the previous owner but he's not answering. I don't think he sent the v5 off. I'm more annoyed at myself for not knowinf how to sort this out, I should have looked it all up, but I desperately needed a car and just bought the first one I could find so I could get to work. Now I'm stuck again for 4 weeks paying £20 a day to travel two hours for work, so very annoying.

GeorgieTheGorgeousGoat · 03/09/2018 13:12

If you bought it a few months ago, did you not chase the V5 when it didn’t arrive?

GeorgieTheGorgeousGoat · 03/09/2018 13:12

Why are you stuck for 4 weeks?

picklejimmy · 03/09/2018 13:13

If I'm honest I forgot. I know this is all my fault for being badly organised and not knowing the stuff I should. I'd just started a new job, it just slipped my mind.

OP posts:
picklejimmy · 03/09/2018 13:14

Georgiethegeorgeousgoat apparently it takes 4-6 weeks for a new v5 to come through

OP posts:
Raver84 · 03/09/2018 13:14

Just get the mot done it's that simple.

picklejimmy · 03/09/2018 13:15

I didn't know I could drive to the mot without tax so I'll do that. Thanks! Do I not need a valid v5 to get the mot done?

OP posts:
KatieMarieJ · 03/09/2018 13:15

Book in for MOT, once done get the car taxed from the MOT. Surely that has to be cheaper than £20 a day for x months waiting? Depending on when it runs out in October if it is say 1 October you'll get a 13 month ticket anyway.

Singlebutmarried · 03/09/2018 13:16

V5 takes 5 working days to come through. Costs £25.

However if the old owner hasn’t declared that he’s sold it to you then declare will send the v5 to his address.

Singlebutmarried · 03/09/2018 13:17

Second declare = DVLA

picklejimmy · 03/09/2018 13:17

I'll do that, thanks everyone!!! Definitely a lesson on being more organised haha

Millipedewithherfeetup · 03/09/2018 13:18

I would phone dvla and tell them the whole story....sure they will be able to sort it for you.

VeniVidiWeeWee · 03/09/2018 13:19

pickle

Use this link and follow the instructions. Let us know if it says it is taxed.

picklejimmy · 03/09/2018 13:19

I tried, apparently their systems are down so can't access details.

OP posts:
picklejimmy · 03/09/2018 13:20

VeniVidiWeeWee the DVLA website says not taxed.
