I bought my car a few months ago (first ever car, I have no idea about these things) the tax just ran out and I went to renew it online and its saying the vehicle details aren't valid. I have the green bit of the v5, but I don't think the last owner sent off the yellow bit... I'm not really sure what to do, I need my car to get to work and by the looks of it it takes up 4-6 weeks to get a new v5. I've tried to get in contact with the guy I bought it from but no luck. Does anyone know what I can do?

Best thing you could do in this situation is book your MOT for ASAP, you can drive it there untaxed. Once it has MOT take it to the post office with your green slip and they'll tax it then. Then apply for a new V5 for it. Don't worry, it's an easy mistake, you know for next time now

BarbaraofSevillle · 03/09/2018 13:32

You should have sent the green slip off to get the logbook in your name. If the seller has sent off his bit, but you haven't sent off your bit, this could be why the details are invalid - your car could be in limbo with no official owner?

The owner would have got his remaining tax back and you should have taxed it since the first of the month when you bought it.

Can you get the details of the MOT certificate online to tax it? Do they still do car tax at Post Offices? I wonder if the Post Office system can check online so you don't need to take paper documents in?

Maybe you can do this when the DVLA system is back up? But you don't need any documents to MOT the car, you just take it in.

But in your circumstances, I think I would phone DVLA for advice, explain that you haven't bought a car before, so didn't know what you were doing, and ask what needs to happen to put things right. If you admit to driving it since June or whenever you bought it, be prepared to pay for the tax starting from then.

You have insured it haven't you?

picklejimmy · 03/09/2018 13:36

Yeah, I have insurance. I'm gonna call rye DVLA when their systems are back up. Hopefully they can help. I'm going to book an mot as well.

If it’s MOT is still valid but not taxed, take your green slip into the post office and explain. I had to pay £25 but they were able to tax the car and help me fill in and send off the right form for me to get a new log book, etc in my name. I didn’t need to wait for the log book to come through before I could tax/drive it.

TruffleShuffles · 03/09/2018 14:28

How do you know the car needs taxing? If the V5 hasn’t been transferred to your name and address how have you received the tax renewal notice?

picklejimmy · 03/09/2018 14:32

APermanentlyExhaustedPigeon even without the mot certificate?

TruffleShuffles because you can check the numberplate on the DVLA website and the guy I bought it from said the tax runs out in Sept. (I didn't know tax couldn't be transferred then)

Yep, I’m fact I have no idea where my MOT certificate is. They can check the MOT status online now.

APermanentlyExhaustedPigeon · 03/09/2018 14:38

*in not I’m !!

picklejimmy · 03/09/2018 14:39

Oh amazing!!!

Have you managed to sort this out yet? You can get a new v5 in 5 days, mine only took 3 days but I'm not sure how it will work if you are not listed as the registered keeper, which I assume you're not?

Smurfie12 · 03/09/2018 15:29

Be aware that the new MOT rules have come into force, please check with the rules around this before taking your car in for an early MOT.

AnnieAnoniMoose · 03/09/2018 15:48

I’m a bit confused where you’re at with this BUT there are two numbers on the V5. Every bloody time I use the wrong one first (I think there’s one at the top right hand side and one almost at the bottom on the right hand side).

I think this will be much easier to sort out than you think. Try not to worry.

Havaina · 03/09/2018 15:55

I took the green bit of the V5 and a MOT cert to the post office and got road tax there and then. I had to complete the form and pay £25 but you don't have to wait, as soon as you've paid the road tax and the £25 you're good to go!

I know because I did this 2 weeks ago.

picklejimmy · 03/09/2018 16:02

I tried both numbers on the form.
Also don't have an mot certificate. But I'm gonna try just take the green form in and hope they can help, can't sort it until the weekend though as I'm at work, no post offices nearby and they're closed by the time I finish.

Havaina · 03/09/2018 16:18

Make sure you have your vehicle chassis number, OP, they will send you away if you don't have it.

howardbear · 03/09/2018 16:37

I work in a post office and you’ll be able to sort this out there.

You no longer need to bring a copy of your MOT certificate as proof as the computer will know if it’s valid or not.

Take your v5/c (the little green slip) and ask to tax it from the beginning of the month. As previous posters have said you haven’t been taxed since you’ve had the car as it’s not transferable so DVLA will most likely issue you a fine for the ‘free’ months.

You can also use that little green slip whilst your at the post office to apply for a new log book with a v62 form, as someone else said you’ll need the chassis number for the form which can be found on the engine. You WONT be charged £25 for doing this as you have evidence of being the new keeper (your v5/c)

Hope that helps.

Havaina · 03/09/2018 16:39

Yes, in my case I had to pay the £25 as I had lost my logbook.

howardbear · 03/09/2018 16:44

havaina to be honest to me it’s sounds like you shouldn’t have been charged either, your little green slip is your v5/c and is evidence your the new keeper. If you had nothing then that’s when the £25 charge applies so I’d check that out.

picklejimmy · 03/09/2018 16:53

Howardbear thank you so much for putting my mind at ease, I'm going to try and get it sorted ASAP. So relieved its easily sorted.
Thanks everyone!!

Havaina · 03/09/2018 16:53

Thanks Howardbear. When I receive my new logbook, I'll call the DVLA to ask if I should have enough charged.

Havaina · 03/09/2018 16:54

*should have been charged
