to be irked by this protein nonsense

I keep seeing various food packaging with protein written across the front in big letters.

Its like they're making out this protein thing is a new invention and some people appear to be fooled into thinking protein rich food was hitherto unavailable.

Maybe I'm just a grumpy old woman....

God, yes. "Protein box". Its a fucking salad. With an egg. Such utter wankery.

headinhands · 26/08/2018 23:57

Maybe it's a cycle? Maybe next year carbohydrates will be 'discovered for the first time'?

I saw "protein nuts" snack packs from Graze at the till in Tesco yesterday. Don't all nuts contain protein?

I am convinced that some people think it's a new fangled added ingredient.

I blame the teachers
or rather, the department of education who stopped kids learninng basic nutrition and cooking

BlueBug45 · 27/08/2018 00:31

It's because sports/exercise people and nutritionists have been pushing eating more protein over processed carbs for a few years, so food companies have jumped on the bandwagon to keep sales up.

You have to be an idiot not to realise that the protein being pushed by sports/exercise people and nutritionists isn't in those processed packets of food items.

Two boiled eggs and a small amount of spinach (it'd wilt to a tiny amount if cooked). Grin

TheMythicalChicken · 27/08/2018 00:47

The human body only needs a small amount of protein. Have you ever heard of anyone suffering from a protein deficiency, like, ever?

It annoys me too.

esk1mo · 27/08/2018 00:49

it annoys me SO much, especially as there’s barely any protein in them.

“15g per 100g!!” yet the product only weighs 33g.

or the “protein weetabix” that actually had LESS protein compared tonthe supermarket own-brand weetabix.

i say this as someone who eats 130+ grams of protein a day. i think its just marketed towards the instagram gym bunnies.

A0001 · 27/08/2018 01:08

How do you manage that? I’ve recently turned veggie so am looking for ideas.

A0001 · 27/08/2018 01:08

Oh, and OP... you’re not wrong.

esk1mo · 27/08/2018 02:22

A0001 protein shakes help, they’re around 30g of protein per shake so i have 2 per day. websites like bulkpowder and myprotein sell vegan and veggie protein powder for cheap and lots of different flavours Smile

also eggs and liquid egg whites help. if you’re veggie i think lentils, beans, nuts, eggs would be good for you to eat. maybe tofu aswell? i eat meat which makes
it easier for me.

"I blame the teachers"

Bugger! Something else I'm now responsible for!

Weirdly I teach my own DC about nutrition and healthy eating because I am her PARENT. I'll leave other parents to handle that for their children whilst I teach them the stuff I'm paid to.

Ameliablue · 27/08/2018 03:27

It's like the omega 3 fish fingers that used a cheaper fish but at a higher price because they marketed it as being healthier.

My year 8 class know all about food groups actually.

Magnussen · 27/08/2018 05:47

A protein snack

I think the only legitimate time a human being in this country needs a snack is after exercise

And they will need protein

So it's just marking it out as such. Simple I guess

redexpat · 27/08/2018 06:01

Actually quite a lot of the ready made salads have pasta in them. The protein salad obviously doesnt which is good for dh who is low carbing.
Diclaimer: dont live in the uk.

PhilomenaButterfly · 27/08/2018 06:07

I love it, because protein is the only thing that fills me up, and it makes shopping easier. Protein in the form of meat doesn't work, though. Confused

PhilomenaButterfly · 27/08/2018 06:10

Magnussen I snack whenever I'm hungry. Am I doing it wrong?

Cherrysherbet · 27/08/2018 06:11

Yep, it's total bollocks.

Wtf?? No they haven't! Healthy eating and cooking is covered by every school that I know?

headinhands · 27/08/2018 07:30

it makes shopping easier.

Did you see what @esk1mo pointed out? That shops own brand standard 'wheat biscuits' have more protein than 'Weetabix Protein'.

You're much better off reading the nutritional info on the back. Only take a second. The protein % is listed one up from the bottom.

A bit of googling will also prevent you being fleeced by this fad and paying more than you need.

OP posts:
actualpuffins · 27/08/2018 07:32

Yeah, it's such a stupid fad, driven by young men wanting to bulk up in the gym. Too much protein, especially in the form of meat, is bad for you. It seems like "protein" is the new food industry byword for "healthy".

headinhands · 27/08/2018 07:32

I worked in education until recently. It's still very much in the curriculum and the EYFS to develop a working knowledge of healthy eating. In primary they were still using the 'eatwell plate' tool.

CognitiveDissonance · 27/08/2018 07:33

God the amount of time I see "I blame teachers" trotted out is bloody ridiculous
