to be irked by this protein nonsense

I keep seeing various food packaging with protein written across the front in big letters.

Its like they're making out this protein thing is a new invention and some people appear to be fooled into thinking protein rich food was hitherto unavailable.

Maybe I'm just a grumpy old woman....

as with SRE, schools should pick up where many oarents for whatever reason fail

goodgirls · 27/08/2018 11:31

I blame the teachers or rather, the department of education who stopped kids learninng basic nutrition and cooking

How have the DoE or teachers stopped you from teaching your children basic nutrition and cooking?

Sofabitch · 27/08/2018 11:40

The body only takes in the protein it needs; all the rest is lost in urine, so basically most of your expensive protein shake is pissed away.

Protein should never be excreted in urine! Your kidneys are failing if there is protein in your urine

HarveySchlumpfenburger · 27/08/2018 11:43

It’s probably shorter to write the list of things that teachers aren’t to blame for.

Quite how teachers are being blamed for this when food groups/the eatwell plate and the importance of a balanced diet are all over the curriculum from nursery up to KS4 is a bit of a mystery. Especially since the most effective way of improving healthy eating in children is to educate the parents rather than the children.

NameChanger22 · 27/08/2018 11:47

It's because of the low-carb diet nonsense. Low-carb diets don't work long term, they're expensive and very bad for your health.

AnguaResurgam · 27/08/2018 11:53

I think curriculum change from cookery and/to home economics to food tech did reduce the teaching of basic nutrition.

And I'd noticed how much Protein marketing is going on at the moment. Which, seeing as the typical Western diet is already very high in protein, has to be just a fad. Unless you are a competitive body builder or weight lifter, or a fruitarian, it's nigh on impossible to be deficient.

""I blame the teachers or rather, the department of education who stopped kids learninng basic nutrition and cooking""

I did cookery at school, but we didn't cook nutritious stuff, in the late 70's/80's. We didn't really focus on learning about nutrition, either.

We've got groups of people who want to gain a certain body shape and eating Protein diets help that. We've got groups of people who are eating more healthily, in general, but still want ready meals etc. We've got people who are eating less ready meals and only want to buy nutritious food.

Then we have people who are eating less processed stuff and cooking, which creates a fall in sales.

So the companies think how they can keep sales consistent and add new customers.

So this is what they've come up with.

""Which, seeing as the typical Western diet is already very high in protein, has to be just a fad. Unless you are a competitive body builder or weight lifter, or a fruitarian, it's nigh on impossible to be deficient.""

The problem is that much of the protein that younger Men take in, also isn't good for muscle building and has too much fat. It must depend on were you live, but the muscular look, is popular with younger Men were I am. Likewise a lot of other people.

Protein isn't something we check, so we don't really know how many teen Girls and younger Women are Protein deficient, although, as a Vegan, I know we don't need need as much Protein as people panic about.

Juells it was debated among Medical Practitioners whether those with Celiac Disease should use Gluten free products.

Some people found that they got less irritation, in their skin/scalp etc when they went to Gluten Free products.

Doctors agree that it is worth using Gluten free lipstick and hand lotion.

abbsisspartacus · 27/08/2018 18:20

Yes it is my job as a parent to teach my children basic nutrition etc etc it's also my job to put a roof over our heads so in an insecure job market they get fed healthy meals after I've picked them up from the childminder I don't have the time to teach just to feed and clothe them I'm on my third job this year due to circumstances being shite and struggling with this so when I have the time to be Mary fucking poppins I will be in the meantime we all get what we are given and are grateful Grin

esk1mo · 27/08/2018 20:06

i saw the gluten free shampoo Shock i have coeliac disease and im not sure if its even marketed towards me?! im not going to consume the shampoo.

re: protein shakes, i do alot of weightlifting/powerlifting so i need higher protein intake to build and maintain muscle Smile

excess is excreted in urine as urea or converted to glucose.

TheHuntingOfTheSarky · 27/08/2018 20:10

I’ve had bariatric surgery so have to get in a certain amount of protein per day so for me protein shakes and protein water are helpful, BUT don’t be fooled by the ones that offer anything over 20g of protein - your body won’t be able to process more than 20g at a time so ones offering 30g are pointless and not all of it will count towards your daily total, if you have a specific figure you’re aiming for.

redsummershoes · 27/08/2018 20:11

yanbu
there is plenty of protein in carby foods (potatos for example).

my feeling is that we will see many more cases of gout in the future...

esk1mo · 27/08/2018 21:19

hunting that’s been debunked.

esk1mo · 27/08/2018 21:20

oops pressed send.

it depends entirely on the person. what type of protein you are consuming, large meal/small meal, carb and fat alongside protein, your activity levels. there isn’t one cut off point across humans of 20g protein. our bodies are very adaptable.
