To think spitting is disgusting?

Is there a reason people spit when walking along the street? I never feel the need to spit myself so don't understand, is there a medical condition that people have? Tbf it's usually men doing it but not always! It turns my stomach!

YANBU. They're just gross.

Haggisfish · 25/08/2018 20:37

Yanbu-it is stomach churning and revolting. Worse if pre accompanied by nose snorting and houking.

EdWinchester · 25/08/2018 20:38

Agree - it's disgusting and only scumbags do it.

Tomatoesrock · 25/08/2018 20:38

Yanbu. It is disgusting. My neighbour was walking towards me earlier, he had a few drinks on him, by the time we passed he had spit twice but the worse he actually nose spit loads of snot too, I still feel sick.

merlotmummy14 · 25/08/2018 20:40

YANBU - my partner does it despite me telling him it is the most unattractive and disgusting habit in the world. Everytime he does it I get major p'd off but he still hasn't learned altho he doesn't do it in front of me as much anymore.

jasminemaya · 25/08/2018 20:40

YANBU and it's always men!
Never in my life have I seen a woman spit.

Almostfifty · 25/08/2018 20:42

I was spat on when I was a child at school, he got my long hair.

I have never felt so dirty in my life and can remember feeling absolutely past myself till I could go home and have a shower.

Because of this I hate spitters, and have drummed it into my sons that they spit out toothpaste and nothing else, ever.

ethelfleda · 25/08/2018 20:45

YANBU - I find it utterly disgusting. Really does give me the rage.
It’s much more common in other countries than here - from memory I think it was common in India and some of the places in SE Asia I have visited. It has always turned my stomach.

ems137 · 25/08/2018 20:57

I find it absolutely disgusting and have no issues telling people that when they do it near me!

I was stood queuing in a bakery a couple of years ago and the man in front of me spat on the floor! I was outraged! Everyone else looked at him disgustingly and I had to say something.

Another time we had a group of builders/plumbers in fitting a new boiler and one of them kept spitting on our concrete back yard floor. My husband had tried to shut the blinds before I could see because he knew I'd go mad!

letsdolunch321 · 25/08/2018 21:08

Absolutely vile behaviour, I feel the need to punch people who spit - ☹️

bobstersmum · 25/08/2018 21:10

Glad you agree! But just why oh why do they do it? What do they get out of it?

OP posts:
footballmum · 25/08/2018 21:11

Agree. It always makes me retch when I see anyone doing it Envy

backtousername1 · 25/08/2018 21:12

God knows why.
The ONLY time I feel the need to spit is when I’ve been running at a fair pace for 25+ minutes. I think you concentrate so much on breathing that you forget to swallow and your mouth fills up with too much saliva.
If I need to do it then it will be on a country lane, with no one in sight and into a bush or long grass! I hate spitting in general though!

Septima · 25/08/2018 21:13

Glad you agree! But just why oh why do they do it? What do they get out of it?

I reckon they’re like dogs and have to mark their territory as they go along. Peeing isn’t really tolerated, so they do the next best thing.

Fairylea · 25/08/2018 21:14

Yanbu. It’s absolutely disgusting.

Idontbelieveinthemoon · 25/08/2018 21:14

Revolting habit. A friend of DS2's came to our house (they're 7, so not great big strapping teens) and spat in our garden towards our dog. DH spotted it and shushed me back into the kitchen as I sprinted towards him screeching "whaaaaat was that". Awful.

TheQueef · 25/08/2018 21:17

Almost50 A bully spat in my face on the school bus, it was the most degrading, grubby, experience of my life. I understand. Flowers

HarshingMyMellow · 25/08/2018 21:19

I hate spitting.

One of the most revolting thing a person can do.
I really don't understand how anyone can be out in a public place and just gob onto the floor, without giving a single fuck.
Grim.

My DF has been spat at a few times whilst at work Envy

IndigoSpritz · 25/08/2018 21:20

It is foul and is most often men. Urinals are a favourite target for some reason. I believe public spitting in Singapore can earn you a spell inside.

Munchyseeds · 25/08/2018 21:20

It is truly foul

feathermucker · 25/08/2018 21:20

One of my pet hates!

GiraffeObsessedBaby · 25/08/2018 21:24

I agree I find it totally disgusting and despise people who do it.

However several times whilst ill with severe chest infections and also at other times whilst I was pregnant I was nauseous 24/7 but I'm very rarely physically sick I just get mouthfuls of mucus and liquid. If I keep it in my mouth it makes me properly sick. There's been plenty of times I've been caught out with no tissues or ends of receipts or dog poo bags and have ended up finding a corner to "spit". I understand to a stranger this looks vile but I have no choice and the abuse I've gotten when this happens in the past is unreal =[

vintagesewingmachine · 25/08/2018 21:24

It it utterly vile. I was brought up to think that one only spat into the sink after cleaning one's teeth or into the special basin at the dentist. When I learned to SCUBA dive, I had to turn my back to spit into my mask so no-one could see, such is my ingrained belief that spitting is revolting manners Grin

GiraffeObsessedBaby · 25/08/2018 21:25

I'd like to add this is ALWAYS outdoors into a bush or similar. If inside I will ALWAYS find a toilet or a bin or a tissue.

glintandglide · 25/08/2018 21:28

Because they’re pigs
