To think spitting is disgusting?

Is there a reason people spit when walking along the street? I never feel the need to spit myself so don't understand, is there a medical condition that people have? Tbf it's usually men doing it but not always! It turns my stomach!

Sometimes allergies make you spit/a thing called a 'post viral drip'....I had it for almost a whole year once.

But not being gross I went to the bathroom to spit instead/drank a glass of water.

In the UK I've never seen a woman do it, only ever men. Any race or nationality, it's not 'cultural' in that respect.

To me it signifies a lack of respect and consideration of others - "I don't care if I make this place unpleasant for others, this suits ME".

Queuegardens · 26/08/2018 14:57

I can kind of see why you would spit if running as hard as you could playing in the actual World Cup or whatever. But not if you're just watching!

LakieLady · 26/08/2018 14:58

And that thing of holding one nostril and blowing the contents of the others onto the floor. Utterly disgusting, no need.

A cyclist once did that as I was overtaking in the car - he sort of blew the snot over his shoulder. It must have caught in the slipstream or something and I had a great dollop of snot on my windscreen.

It's utterly vile. I'm a police officer and have been spat on three times now - my team and I always say we'd rather be punched than spat on. One of the times landed in my mouth and I could taste the wine Envy

I always say something if I see it in the street, I can't help it, my face automatically just screws up. Ugh. Shudder

Babyroobs · 26/08/2018 15:07

I have nursed for 30 years and that business of holding one nostril closed whilst forcing snot out of the other ( often into a hospital sink ) is definitely a cultural thing.

How do allergies make you spit?

CocoDeMoll · 26/08/2018 17:58

Dh does it but not blatantly in front of strangers. Still gross though and I always pull him up on it.

Isitsixoclockalready · 26/08/2018 17:58

It is pretty grim, it is pretty much exclusively us blokes and yeah, it seems like it's some sort of 'macho' thing with some influence from professional football.

Grasslands · 26/08/2018 18:00

Isn’t it illegal to spit/snot on the sidewalk/street?

Camomila · 26/08/2018 18:15

stoat Because you start producing too much phglem to try to clear the pollen/allergen etc. and then it all gets stuck in your throat making it hard to breathe (I can't breathe through my nose normally)
.....this might not be typical of allergies, I have other ENT problems too and I youngish at the time so I might have missunderstood the doctors explanation.

ShutUpBaz · 26/08/2018 18:56

YANBU. Its utterly vile and unnecessary. My DH is a prison officer and he dreads being spat on. He'd rather be punched or kicked.

Although, its classed as assault so anyone that spits at him or his colleagues will have their sentence extended.
