Driving from Cambridge up to Edinburgh in a few weeks time, with 2 small ones. Where can we stop off for milk, nappy changes , petrol ? We have National Trust cards and are happy to do a short detour if needed.

TEBAY TEBAY TEBAY

Best service station possibly in the world. The food is great.

Pebblesandfriends · 22/08/2018 21:22

Another vote for Tebay here

WhatAmISupposedToBeDoing · 22/08/2018 21:23

Wetherby is always always heaving busy. My 4 year old got so fed up in the queue for Burger King she asked to just go get a sandwich instead.

Ferrybridge is good.

TheLastNigel · 22/08/2018 21:25

Donnington park services near Derby (m1).

It's a beauty!

Anasnake · 22/08/2018 21:25

Tebay is the best in the UK

Iltavilli · 22/08/2018 21:26

All the Tebay!

treezylover · 22/08/2018 21:26

Tebay.

Ohyesiam · 22/08/2018 21:28

Tebay.
We used to pack the car the night before, get up at 4, load in the sleeping kids and be up at Tebay for a cooked breakfast with half the journey behind us by the time they woke up at about 8. Similar timings from Cambridge I should think.

spugzbunny · 22/08/2018 21:28

Leigh Delaware

Vinorosso74 · 22/08/2018 21:28

I hate Wetherby services!!! All the coaches and minibuses seem to stop there. Queues everywhere and nightmare trying to park. Avoid!

ThanosSavedMe · 22/08/2018 21:29

Teebay. Every single time

SerenDippitty · 22/08/2018 21:29

Tebay, and Cairn Lodge Farmshop on A74(M) southbound south of Glasgow is also very nice.

bigfishlittlefishtupperwarebox · 22/08/2018 21:30

I was coming on to say Tebay too. I only live half an hour or so away but if I'm on a long drive I still make a point of stopping there. It's sad really!

Ithinkthatsenough · 22/08/2018 21:31

Rheged centre in cumbria is just off the m6 and has allsorts to entertain x

CalonGlas · 22/08/2018 21:32

Tebay. Or you could do a weeny diversion to the M5 and stop off at Tebay South. Just by Gloucester.

knowledgeofnone · 22/08/2018 21:33

Come off at the Lake District and go to pooley bridge some lovely restaurants there when we stopped and some stunning views!

ShadyLady53 · 22/08/2018 21:33

I once actually drove to Tebay services just to go there and then drove straight home. A two hour round trip just to go to Tebay Services. Who does that?

I also like Annandale Waters for a quick stop as it can be quite restful and if you are on the M6 toll at any point Norton Canes is quite nice. They have a LEON.

yetmorecrap · 22/08/2018 21:34

Gloucester, owned by Tebay!!

littlecabbage · 22/08/2018 21:35

I was coming on to say Gloucester services but then saw it is out of your way. But now I gather it is the same as this "Tebay" you're all so excited about!

QueenofStella · 22/08/2018 21:36

If you are coming up the A1 and will pass Gateshead, there is a NT property - Gibside - in Rowlands Gill, which is about 5 miles off the Gateshead Metrocentre turnoff. Basically it’s a huge estate with historic monuments, trails, a couple of good play areas and a cafe / ice cream shop. They do loads for kids, treasure hunts, bug hunts, stories by the fire etc.

Plus there is a big Asda just before you rejoin the A1 - to get supplies etc.

Also agree to avoid Wetherby Services - stag-do and hen-do central. Durham is OK, Ferrybridge probably your best bet in Yorkshire

Needsleepneedsleep · 22/08/2018 21:38

Not sure I have any favourites, but can definitely tell you some of my least favourites! Severn Bridge eastbound, Rownhams, Petersfield

StylishMummy · 22/08/2018 21:40

Gloucester services are ace!

TheCumbrian · 22/08/2018 21:44

Reghed is also owned by Westmorland Group (Tebay and Gloucester Services). If you are willing to come off the motorway a little bit at J40 (less than 10 mins away from the junction) then Reghed is like Tebay but bigger and better.

StripySocksAndDocs · 22/08/2018 21:45

Ha! I had thought it was just my mum who had favorite service stations because shes a bit of a nut. (one of hers is Weather!!).

I'm afraid I'm no use OP, I just stop at the next one after some one, or I, says they need the loo.

DrFoxtrot · 22/08/2018 21:45

Definitely Tebay if you're coming up the M6. Also consider using the M6 toll and prepare yourself for MILES of 40-50 mph roadworks. Stop at regular intervals for toilet breaks etc as you never know when the next chance might be if you're stuck in traffic.
