To think this is awkward?!

New flatmate moved into my place around a week ago and we haven’t crossed paths yet (different schedules etc)

Can hear the two guys chatting in the kitchen, my doors a bit open and I’m working, they are right next door (feet away) and they know I’m in here! Im friendly with one of them but as mentioned haven’t met second. I feel too awkward to go in!

They’ve been chatting for 40 mins but it’s quite blokes stuff and I just don’t have the energy atm!!

Can you not take a quick break to go through and make a cuppa and introduce yourself?

mimibunz · 13/08/2018 19:38

Ok, then don’t go in.

cardibach · 13/08/2018 19:40

I’m with Kelly. Just go and say hi. They are probably wondering why you haven’t spoken yet.

Cornpoppin · 13/08/2018 19:42

Just struggling to find an appropriate moment! And overthinking the fact I haven’t said hi yet!

Strongmummy · 13/08/2018 19:42

I’m confused at your OP. It’s your place and you feel awkward going into your own kitchen? Just go and say hi.

EyeDrops · 13/08/2018 19:44

If you're in your room working, I wouldn't expect them to disturb you to say hi?! Go through and make yourself a cup of tea, at least you've crossed paths and made the introduction then.

Pebblesandfriends · 13/08/2018 19:45

Yes get a brew, offer them one. Good luck.

Strongmummy · 13/08/2018 19:46

How old are you OP and are you usually socially awkward, because yes YABU to think that the situation you are in is remotely awkward.

Cornpoppin · 13/08/2018 19:49

I’m 25 and actually normally very confident!

OP posts:
Strongmummy · 13/08/2018 19:49

Why is this particular situation stressing you do you think?

Cornpoppin · 13/08/2018 19:50

Are you serious that none of you would be a bit nervous about introducing yourself to a new flatmate?!?

OP posts:
Strongmummy · 13/08/2018 19:50

No, not nervous at all.

Strongmummy · 13/08/2018 19:51

I am 41 of course 🤣 however I wouldn’t have been nervous at your age either. However we’re all very different

ChasedByBees · 13/08/2018 19:51

I’d be fine! Just go out. 🙂

AgentProvocateur · 13/08/2018 19:51

Just go through and say hi. He’s not going to bite you. He probably thinks it odd that you haven’t done so already. Hmm

Cornpoppin · 13/08/2018 19:51

Round of applause for you strongmummy

Bugger they have now finished convo - will man up and grab up a tea, just didn’t want to go in as they were discussing girls or something

OP posts:
ShumpaLumpa · 13/08/2018 19:51

OP, don't worry about it, it's social anxiety. I don't always like meeting new people and you're in enforced proximity with strangers so it's even more difficult!

Just fake it till you make it! Pretend you're not awkward, go in and say a breezy hi, my name is Cornpop, the rest will take care of it itself Smile

Strongmummy · 13/08/2018 19:53

Good luck OP. Let us know how you get on

EyeDrops · 13/08/2018 19:53

I'd be nervous, yes, but wouldn't find it awkward that they were chatting in the next room without me!

Cornpoppin · 13/08/2018 19:55

Ironically I’m actually very confident normally and Vv chatty! It’s just the thinking about it beforehand!

They have gone back to their rooms! Now I look like a freak!

Would I heck be nervous about saying hi to someone in my gaff!
I would dazzle them with my Northern humour and charm! Not really, I would just go in and say ' Alright, how y'doin? I've not had chance to have a catch up yet, I'm notacooldad!; Let's get kettle on! ( because that is how we talk in the North!!!)

Strongmummy · 13/08/2018 19:59

Can you not go and knock on the guy’s door and introduce yourself ? I don’t get the issue to be honest. You’re all living together!!!!! Maybe I just don’t get modern day flat share situations

notacooldad · 13/08/2018 19:59

They have gone back to their rooms! Now I look like a freak!
Just shout 'Did none of you's put the kettle on then?'

That will break the ice!

No I wouldn't. Have you never lived in a housesshare before. Just go and say hi instead of making a drama over it.
