AIBU to want long curtains ?

New flat, tall ceilings, high windows, small budget.

Impossible.

Ikea , H&M etc only sell curtains that are 250cm long. Why??? There must be tens of thousands of properties like mine across the UK.

Everything “made to measure” is a bloody fortune. I have spent all my money on boring things like central heating and rot treatment for the bathroom floor.

AIBU to try to stick a bit of fabric onto the end of Ikea curtains somehow? Iron- on tape maybe ? I haven’t a clue- I can hardly sew on a button let alone make curtains.

Try Amazon. I have huge windows, Amazon have every size, very cheap.

EssentialHummus · 12/08/2018 07:39

Similar problem here - I think Dunelmn does longer?

FASH84 · 12/08/2018 07:42

Our windows are very tall, about 8ft at the back of the ground floor, Dunelm do some ranges in longer length it depends on your budget

Rosemary46 · 12/08/2018 07:42

Speak out - could you possible post an amazon link please ? I looked on amazon and the cheapest I could find was not very nice ones starting at £130!

You are right anything longer than 250cm generally needs to be specially made. I dread to think how much I’ve spent on curtains. Very annoying.

SherbertLemon2011 · 12/08/2018 07:48

EBAY! We have the same issue and eBay has been my saviour. Dry cleaned after buying them and even with that it's still cheap

Rosemary46 · 12/08/2018 07:48

I tried dunelm. Their longest standard curtains are 228cm ( so shorter than Ikea ) and their longest “ longer length “ ones are 274cm.

Unless I’ve missed something ?

We got full length curtains from Dunelm which weren't too expensive.

NoodieRoodie · 12/08/2018 07:49

eBay! It takes a lot of trawling and deciding what you'll compromise on but I bought some last year for a wide bay window that are floor length and they only cost about £40. I watched loads, even ones that were out of my price range because a lot ended up unsold and were relisted at a lower starting price.

Peachpebbles · 12/08/2018 07:50

Yeah, seconding Dunelm for longer curtains.

sexnotgender · 12/08/2018 07:53

I just spent £1400 on curtains 🙁

Not only are my windows 3m tall they are nearly 3m wide😩

I did get 6 pairs of curtains for that price though, so not utterly horrendous.

strawberrie · 12/08/2018 07:53

eBay! We found a seller on there who makes to measure and have had two roller blinds and a pair of long curtains from her. Beautifully made and very good value.

I bought the fabric (once online, and once went in person and posted it to her). Much cheaper than the fabric shop quoted to mark them.

BarbaraofSevillle · 12/08/2018 07:54

IKEA used to do 300 cm long curtains. If they are long enough, see if there are any on ebay?

Otherwise could you buy extra pairs and get a seamstress or alterations person to extend the curtains for you?

Our local market has a sewing shop and the woman who does that also does alterations. This sort of solution is likely to be cheaper than a made to measure specialists.

Or Google IKEA hacks curtains for links to other ideas.

sexnotgender · 12/08/2018 07:54

Also check out gumtree and Facebook market place. You do sometimes find someone selling massive curtains.

Dress agencies sometimes have them too.

BarbaraofSevillle · 12/08/2018 07:55

Cross posted with a few others.

hamandpease · 12/08/2018 07:59

@sexnotgender from where if you don't mind me asking? I'm looking at 1k for two pairs for the same width windows

sexnotgender · 12/08/2018 08:03

I’ll PM you hamandpease

FASH84 · 12/08/2018 08:06

Our Dunelm ones had a huge hem that we had let down at a local alterations shop, can't remember how much but it wasn't expensive. Gave us just over 300cm drop on a pair that were meant to be 274cm. 300cm is 9ft ten I'd be surprised if your windows are bigger than that? It was long enough for our biggest window, 274cm (just shy of 9ft) were fine for the others with a pole above (track for the bay) and came below the window sill at the bottom, to the floor for the longest one.

overandunder9 · 12/08/2018 08:07

Hi Sexnotgender, would you possibly be able to DM me the details too please? Smile

CornishFairing · 12/08/2018 08:08

Wait, I needed curtains nearly 3m long and got them from ikea. Have they shortened them?!

CornishFairing · 12/08/2018 08:10

Just checked - yes they have. Bastards !!

RoadToRivendell · 12/08/2018 08:12

Oh goodness, keep fighting the good fight, short curtains are a crime against high ceilings.

We have a place nearby called the Curtain Exchange where people sell their old, expensive custom curtains - keep googling and find something second-hand. This might be a good time for you to learn how to sew.

hamandpease · 12/08/2018 08:13

Thank you @sexnotgender sent you one back 👍

CornishFairing · 12/08/2018 08:14

If you eBay "Ikea curtains 300" there are quite a few. Some in packet.

Also try "large velvet curtains" if you want heavy ones ! Just seen some lovely ones

longwayoff · 12/08/2018 08:14

Live in a house with high ceilings and, long georgian windows. Fortunately there are similar houses in town and my curtains have come from charity shops. Cultivate relationships with them. Fortunately they're as difficult for them to sell as they are for you to buy so good luck.
