AIBU to want long curtains ?

New flat, tall ceilings, high windows, small budget.

Impossible.

Ikea , H&M etc only sell curtains that are 250cm long. Why??? There must be tens of thousands of properties like mine across the UK.

Everything “made to measure” is a bloody fortune. I have spent all my money on boring things like central heating and rot treatment for the bathroom floor.

AIBU to try to stick a bit of fabric onto the end of Ikea curtains somehow? Iron- on tape maybe ? I haven’t a clue- I can hardly sew on a button let alone make curtains.

We've got 10ft windows and the curtains gather in the floor still. I got them in IKEA.

@barneymcgroo
Could you share the curtain shop near Edinburgh if you don't mind please?

Rosemary46 · 16/09/2018 16:58

Eliza - Ikea have stopped selling 300 cm curtains in the UK and Ireland, they are max 250cm long now. French Ikea is a good alternative if you live in the south coast ( I don’t ).

I have ordering online but they won’t accept my UK address.

I'm right near Dover so getting to Calais wouldn't be a problem.

I'm hoping for shutters next though when we overhaul the windows/decorate.

Next do made to measure!

Rosemary46 · 16/09/2018 21:57

Thanks Frangipani , but I just had a look at Next and I’d be over £1000 . That’s just for plain beige / neutral fabric , poly cotton lining and 3” pencil pleat . Nothing fancy .

I’d rather spend the £800 on a holiday in France and spend £200 on Ikea curtains . If I could just work out which budget airline flies to an airport near an Ikea ....

If you are willing to give making them a go or get a friend to... I got cheap fabric from eBay - an entire roll which I recovered sofa cushions with (£29 the roll). I can’t sew btw but made a pretty good hash at it by taking my time on a borrowed sewing machine. The fabric is off cuts/end of line from Next and good quality. You could also use clips or pins to hang with as it saves worrying about heading tape.

Sorry I haven't read the whole thread but IKEA do curtain hooks with clips a bit like clothes pegs, so you can just peg them onto any length of fabric and hook them onto the curtain rail holes.

I use fleece fabric because it doesn't fray, so you can just cut it to any length and clip it up. Plus it washes really easily.

catsofa · 17/09/2018 01:27

Oops cross posted, the poster before me already linked to the IKEA clips!

@Tretchikoff It's called the Curtain Agency near Kirkliston. It's like Narnia, only with curtains instead of snow.

@barneymcgroo
