Apparently according to one of my young new colleagues I’ve never lived because I haven’t been smashed out of my Brain.
It’s not that I’ve never drunk alcohol because I have when I was 15 in the park with my friends but I’ve never been drunk....tipsy at best. Since I was 18 i only drink one shandy on Christmas Day in honour of my grandad. I have no passion to drink, and having 2 alcoholic grandparents and a borderline alcoholic dad I have no desire to be drunk. I just think you can have a good time without getting smashed. I never discourage others. Thier body thier choice.
I’ve never smoked and never done drugs.... this shocks people especially doctors or the like....
So what I’m asking....am I in the minority..... because I know I’m certainly not missing out...

OP posts:
InspectorIkmen · 08/08/2018 21:01

If you're happy with your choices why on earth does it matter whether you're in the minority or otherwise?

ILoveDolly · 08/08/2018 21:04

I quite like drinks like wine and cocktails but I'd not think getting drunk was a fantastic not to be missed opportunity. As long as you are still having a social life and happy with yourself, not avoiding situations where others might drink, then crack on. It's your life.

Andro · 08/08/2018 21:05

I've also never been drunk, taken illegal drugs or smoked.

mummabearfoyrbabybears · 08/08/2018 21:05

I've never been drunk either OP, haven't had any alcohol for many years. No drama, just don't enjoy the taste at all. Never smoked either. Probably am in the minority. My only moan about it is the people that go on and on about just having one drink. Ffs! If you told me you hated carrots I wouldn't force feed you them Angry

hellololly · 08/08/2018 21:05

Being drunk is shit, tipsy is quite good sometimes. The social pressure to drink is overwhelming but just be yourself. :)

Toddlerteaplease · 08/08/2018 21:06

I'm 36 and I haven't either and I've never had a hang over. I just don't get why you need to get bladdered to have a good time. and I do enjoy a drink but to be honest I'd rather have tea!

mummabearfoyrbabybears · 08/08/2018 21:06

Neither have I ever taken illegal drugs either.

PaulRuddislush · 08/08/2018 21:20

I've been drunk many many times. It's unpleasant but the journey is fun.

KoolAidPickle · 08/08/2018 21:21

Being drunk can be epic fun.

sleepymama38473 · 08/08/2018 21:24

Last time I was drunk I was 18. I'm now 30 and no I do not feel I'm missing out.

DratThatCat · 08/08/2018 21:26

Being sober can also be epic fun 😉. I'm 37 and I've never been drunk, same background as you OP, alcoholic mother and grandparents. It's just not worth the risk.

MissClareRemembers · 08/08/2018 21:31

The only time I have ever used illegal drugs I experienced an episode so frightening it left me in a state of depression that took a year to lift. Ironically I had to use a controlled drug to reverse the effects of an illegal drug.

After that I stayed away from alcohol as I was terrified of feeling out of control again. I do drink now but not to excess and I’ve had bad reactions to some drinks.

I tried smoking once but it was horrible.

OP at this stage in my life I applaud you and your choices.

BitchQueen90 · 08/08/2018 21:32

I enjoy getting drunk once in a while. Wouldn't think someone was weird for not wanting to do it though. We all like different things.

areyouactuallykidding · 08/08/2018 21:35

I’ve been drunk and taken drugs many a time - and hands down I’ve had some of the most amazing, exciting, formative and life affirming times of my life whilst doing so. So I feel you have probably missed out. But if you’re happy why do you care?

userofthiswebsite · 08/08/2018 21:37

I get so bored of 'alcohol pressure'.
I'd rather have milk (yum) than 99% of the alcohol out there. I just think almost all of it tastes vile.
But people think my attitude is odd or ask me several times over as if I were fibbing.

PitchBlackNight · 08/08/2018 21:39

I think not drinking, not smoking and not taking drugs is quite normal. One of my kids is completely teatotal and another barely drinks. They don’t drink simply because they don’t fancy it and not because of any health, religious or moral reasons. The one that is completely teatotal got through Uni perfectly ok. He partied and went clubbing as much as anyone but just didn’t drink. He didn’t make a big deal about and I don’t think any of his friends cared. Occasionally people would buy him drinks that he then wouldn’t drink but he wasn’t pestered for not drinking.
My other two kids drink alcohol but not excessivelyl
I drink the occasional alcoholic drink. Maybe one or two a month and never more than a single drink at a time. I can go months and months without drinking. I’ve never been drunk but I have been tipsy in the past....but not in the last 30 years. I’ve never even puffed a cigarette or taken drugs.

I can’t imagine a Doctor would be ‘shocked’ to be told someone doesn’t drink alcohol.

I don5 think it’s unusual not to drink alcohol.

checkingforballoons · 08/08/2018 21:40

I was teetotal until I was 20 something. Only ever got as far as tipsy since. And also never smoked or tried drugs. It’s probably not that unusual, but I suppose people don’t mention it - ‘Ugh, I’ve got to get a McDonalds. My head is so clear this morning. I was absolutely SOBER last night’ Grin

ShatnersWig · 08/08/2018 21:41

44, never smoked, never taken any illegal drugs, never been drunk although I do drink. I don't feel I've missed out, particularly when I look at people who behave stupidly when drunk or suffering with hangovers

GhostCurry · 08/08/2018 21:42

“Being sober can also be epic fun”

Well, yes, but being sober is the default. Everyone knows what it’s like to be sober; but someone who has never been drunk can’t comment on it really as they’ve never experienced it.

OP carry on as you are... but I (and I suspect the other pressuring elements in your life) do feel like you are missing out a little. Even if you try it and say ‘never again’... just seems odd not to even try it once, but again, your choice.

As for the PP who said they don’t drink because they don’t like the taste - such an odd thing to say! There are so many different kinds of alcohol, and also - you drink it in part for the effect, not just the flavour.

tootiredtospeak · 08/08/2018 21:46

Drink dont drink its totally individual. But I judge people who drink too regularly for my liking. Cant help it like you say a parent who gave alcohol way to much time leaves a bad taste....

PitchBlackNight · 08/08/2018 21:48

Here are some stats from The Office of National Statistics ‘Adult drinking habits in Great Britain’ released May 2018. Apparently 20% of people over 16 in Great Britain are teatotal with an even higher percentage (23%) of 16-24 year’s olds.

PitchBlackNight · 08/08/2018 21:53

I don’t think it’s odd not to drink because of the taste. Alcohol has a taste that can’t be disguised easily. I like drinks to be refreshing and I don’t usually find alcoholic drinks to be refreshing. I’d prefer a lime and soda.

KoolAidPickle · 08/08/2018 21:54

Alcohol has a taste that can’t be disguised easily.

alcoholic drinks all taste completely different to each other. Saying you don't like the taste is like saying you don't like the taste of any food.

cropcirclesinthefields · 08/08/2018 21:59

I've not been drunk either I've been tipsy happy from drinking but never blind drunk, my brain has this thing where I can't drink alcohol after a little while. I've also never smoked or taken anything illegal, I'm 33.

MulberryPeony · 08/08/2018 22:48

Alcohol has an alcohol taste (and feel to me) though regardless on the type or flavouring or if they’re in mixers etc. I also don’t like mouthwash with alcohol in.

I find it mostly okay in food personally but never managed to eat enough tiramisu to get drunk on it.
