Apparently according to one of my young new colleagues I’ve never lived because I haven’t been smashed out of my Brain.
It’s not that I’ve never drunk alcohol because I have when I was 15 in the park with my friends but I’ve never been drunk....tipsy at best. Since I was 18 i only drink one shandy on Christmas Day in honour of my grandad. I have no passion to drink, and having 2 alcoholic grandparents and a borderline alcoholic dad I have no desire to be drunk. I just think you can have a good time without getting smashed. I never discourage others. Thier body thier choice.
I’ve never smoked and never done drugs.... this shocks people especially doctors or the like....
So what I’m asking....am I in the minority..... because I know I’m certainly not missing out...

I love wine and beer and frankly drink far, far too much. What I am not keen on though is getting drunk. I was accidentally properly drunk recently (out of the habit I think) and I still get the fear. I am embarrassed and regretful. Nothing awful happened but I feel very silly.

I like sitting at the table chatting and drinking wine. Not knocking it back and making a twat of myself.

MarthaArthur · 08/08/2018 23:00

There are different levels of drunkness or being high though. Some are life affirming (LSD and E studies have often pretty positive effects when studied under lab conditions. My uni used to ask for volunteers to take it in the lab Grin fun and free.) Being blackout drunks horrible. Hangovers horrible. But being drunker than tipsy can be really funny. I do judge people who get pass out drunk a lot.

GreenMeerkat · 08/08/2018 23:02

I wish I hadn't!!

I very rarely drink, maybe twice a year, if that. So when I do, it only takes a couple and I'm already drunk, I hate it. I hate the feelings of losing control, plus hangovers are just grim.

You haven't missed much at all.

WhenISnappedAndFarted · 08/08/2018 23:12

I've never smoked or done drugs.

I have been very drunk at the age of 15 and that was enough to put me off for life and since then I've at the most got tipsy.

areyouactuallykidding · 09/08/2018 07:46

I find it mostly okay in food personally but never managed to eat enough tiramisu to get drunk on it.

@mulberrypeony that’s because tiramisu doesn’t usually have alcohol in it.....

YouTheCat · 09/08/2018 07:50

My sil is coming up for 50 and has never been drunk. She just doesn't like the taste of alcohol. I think she had a sip of champagne on her wedding day and she's tried alcopop type stuff.

PolkerrisBeach · 09/08/2018 07:50

It really doesn't matter. I drink - and have definitely been drunk. I've never smoked or taken illegal drugs. I don't feel that I should puff my way through 40 benson and hedges so that I'm not missing out.

JacquesHammer · 09/08/2018 07:53

I’ve never been drunk and this never had a hangover.

I had friends at uni who were the “you’re sooooo missing out type”, funnily they never said that the morning after when they felt like death Grin

kalinkafoxtrot45 · 09/08/2018 08:00

Good for you. If you don’t want to drink alcohol then it’s no business of anybody else. And I say that as someone who very much likes a drink.

PitchBlackNight · 09/08/2018 08:04

alcoholic drinks all taste completely different to each other. Saying you don't like the taste is like saying you don't like the taste of any food

I think alcoholic drinks have a general underlying taste though - maybe as a pp said it's a 'feel' and a taste but Im definitely aware of it most of the time. I'm not saying I can spot alcohol in ppm or if it's say extremely flavored drinks I can always taste it but in general I can.

For me food covers a wide range of tastes and texture but alcohol is a clear group.

Oblomov18 · 09/08/2018 09:35

PitchBlack's link to the survey was interesting.

Many teens seem not as interested in alcohol as previous generations.

Ds1 asked me if I had ever taken drugs. I admitted I had, at uni. He was quite disapproving.

HaveSomeGrace · 09/08/2018 09:42

I’m 37, never been drunk or tipsy, never drink any alcohol, never smoked... I’m boring apparently. I don’t care. My closest friend gave me wine and flowers for my birthday; the wine is still in the fridge. TBH I’d have been equally happy if she’d turned up with flowers and a bottle of Coke Zero!!!!!!! That’s just how I roll!!!!!!

387I2 · 09/08/2018 09:54

I don't drink either, though I can sip on a glass of wine if I must. When I suggested some friends to get me a bottle of wine and flowers as a birthday present, they said they wouldn't do it since I don't drink /much/ but in my mind I imagined serving it to friends, not drink it myself.... At one occasion in around 1988 I had some champagne but threw it all up within only five minutes, had to excuse myself, and take a taxi home and went to bed at 11.30 p.m. spending that new year's eve at home sober and alone. That was it for me.

Lolly86 · 09/08/2018 13:46

Never been drunk, don't drink at all now
Never taken illegal drugs....
Never smoked
Don't feel liked I've missed out at all

ComtesseDeSpair · 09/08/2018 14:08

I don’t think you’ve “missed out” or “haven’t lived” necessarily, but I do think there are some experiences you can have drunk or high (the latter especially) which you can’t replicate through other means and they’re good to have in your bank of “I’ve done this.” Apart from anything else, I think our brains and how they’re wired and what they tell us about our sense of self when we introduce them to different substances is pretty fascinating. Ultimately though, your choices are your own and whilst I’m curious when people say they have never tried any kind of drug or ever been drunk, it doesn’t strike me as particularly strange or something I give any judgement to.

I like being drunk and I like being high and I like hanging out with my friends when they are, too. I also like being completely straight edged and sober too - each are just different experiences.
