Metoodear · 03/08/2018 10:56

Just that people think it’s the location or the cost you could literally have me at a 5 star hotel and it would not matter

I hate the heat
The packing
My husband swearing while he puts the tent up
The drive over
The drive back
The heat i it’s 38 here and I have been sick because twice it’s so hot
I just don’t enjoy going on holiday never have

Camping or caravan holidays would be my idea of hell!

Argeles · 03/08/2018 12:23

I love the experience of exploring new places and cultures, eating different foods, seeing me children enjoy themselves etc, but the rest of it is awful!

Shopping for the holiday

Packing

Unpacking

Worrying about the weight of your cases and that you’ll have to pay more.

Airport security & constant rummaging for passport, liquids, boarding card

Stressing that I’m going to lose someone or something

Can’t relax on the beach - paranoid something will happen to my children

The heat, and being a hot, sticky and sweat red fat mess.

The money involved. I often think I’d like to spend it on some lovely days out here, and the rest on decorating/home improvements.

hungryhippo90 · 03/08/2018 12:24

I love holidays. I hate preparing everyone else in the family to make it happen. For 5 months before going on holiday it’s just stress.

NicoAndTheNiners · 03/08/2018 12:25

I’m not keen in the build up to holidays, organising stuff, flights, being nervous of getting somewhere.

So I now mainly either go to CEntre Parcs 20mins away or go away in my own caravan and even then it’s to one of 2 caravan sites as I’m not keen on new places! I do have bad anxiety and am on my own.

Busybusybust · 03/08/2018 12:25

I quite like going on holiday. But recently I have been thinking about my mum and how horrible it must have been for her in our static caravan holidays. I’m talking 1950s here, caravans were quite small, and there weren’t any laundry facilities. All the washing, ironing, packing. Then all the cooking and washing up, trying to keep 3 children amused in a small caravan in the rain. My dad was lovely, but this was the 50s and it all fell to the wife. Poor mum!

happypoobum · 03/08/2018 12:27

argeles don't go on beach holidays then?

hungry Who is everyone else? If it includes other people over 10, you really shouldn't be doing it all.

Metoodear · 03/08/2018 12:27

No I don't hate going on holiday at all. I love it - inland OR abroad. I find it exciting right from when we start packing, I love the journey, and I love the actual trip.

Why go if you hate it so much?! confused

I ask myself every year but husband can manage with the kids on his own he would struggle to pitch the tent and watch them it takes him 45 minuets and that’s with him putting his back into it as soon as we get there

Hate holiday

I love being on holiday. I fucking detest the travelling to and from.

I have given up on flying after flying to Florida this year. Never again.

Ferry/drive and camping in France. My favourite.

MorrisZapp · 03/08/2018 12:31

I loathe flying but I love trains and can cope with boats. When DS is older I'm going to try cruising.

Metoodear · 03/08/2018 12:31

And can I just say this is not really about cravaning

Went on the royal Caribbean got a honey moon sweet it cost about 7k it was hell just wanted to go home and I keep thinking could of put that on the mortgage

Parky04 · 03/08/2018 12:32

Love holidays providing it's only for a week. Only me and DW go now as DC are too old. We are off to Croatia on Tuesday.

LighthouseSouth · 03/08/2018 13:22

OP are you me

I would always be thinking "we could pay that off the mortgage".

hope you are home soon.

Knittedfairies · 03/08/2018 13:35

I’d much rather stay at home...

Ethylred · 03/08/2018 13:38

Holidays are hell.
Fact.

BettyBooHoo · 03/08/2018 13:49

Well I hate camping with a passion. And only paying a grand for a week in Majorca, no wonder it was crap.

Spend more money and you get much nicer surroundings and comfort.

BettyBooHoo · 03/08/2018 13:56

Just don't get the hatred of packing either. I know people who spend days packing. WTAF are they faffing about at?

Assuming you're on top of your laundry, I can pack for a holiday for the 4 of us in less than half an hour. Just do not get why it causes so much stress.

One neat hack though is that I bought each of us a big holiday toiletries bag each, which is permanently left fully stocked in each of our suitcases. I just put fresh sun cream in them each year, makes life much easier.

SB1189 · 03/08/2018 14:05

I’ve never actually met someone in real life who doesn’t like holidays. I couldn’t stop travelling I absolutely love it! Skiing in winter, city breaks in spring & autumn, get somewhere hot in the summer- maybe somewhere coastal with beaches and cafes and restaurants, maybe a nice city somewhere. And the excitement of new places & new cultures and new people! And the food and the drink and the thrill of stepping onto the plane or train or car knowing the other end is a new and exciting place! All my best memories as a kid are on family holidays.

happypoobum · 03/08/2018 14:12

I hate spending money on my house and always think "that could have paid for a holiday!!" Grin

I agree re packing. I am off to Italy for a week tomorrow with the DC. Haven't even started packing but we will each just take hand luggage. I will take:
three dresses with short sleeves and covering knees for mainly daytime wear (so I can get into sacred sites)
Denim shorts and 4 tops for evening wear.
Cotton culottes and 2 t shirts for travel days
Spare pair of glasses
plug adaptors
toiletries and hairbrush
make up
pants and bra
Will just take Birkies, which I will wear on plane
5 books

It will take very little time or effort to throw that lot into a case.

hammeringinmyhead · 03/08/2018 14:14

I love holidays. But I will never set foot in a tent ever again after being scarred by Guide Camp, I don't go in August (and won't when I have a child) and I'm prepared to pay for a nice hotel. There's no law that says your holiday has to be in the summer - go in May or October half term!

Belindabauer · 03/08/2018 14:14

I think it depends on who you go with and the type of holiday it is.
I have never had a bad holiday, well not as an adult, a child yes spent caravaning in the cold and wet.
I would not go on a camping holiday full stop.
No way, never.
Sleeping outdoors in a tent with a miserable husband cannot be fun.
However going away with someone who is relaxed, easy going and fun to be with to a comfortable beautiful location is a different experience.
I always said that I would never go on holiday unless it was a true holiday for me.
So no cooking, cleaning, being the main childcare giver etc etc.go
I also refuse point blanc to drive whilst on holiday.

BigSandyBalls2015 · 03/08/2018 14:20

I liked it once the DCs reached the age of about 10/11 and sorted out their packing themselves, so all I did was mine. DH has always done his thank god.

If I had to pack for the entire family still it would drive me nuts. I know people who still pack cases for their late teens Shock! How would they even know what to put in it!

I get a bit stressy leaving the house - I do like to leave it clean and tidy as hate the thought of coming back all relaxed to a shit heap. And again I don't have to unpack for anyone else - we all do our own. Although DDs case is still laying on her bedroom floor, looking as though it has burst open …. she's been back from hols three weeks!

MinesaPinot · 03/08/2018 14:22

I love holidays but find my taste in holidays is changing. I used to be happy flying off somewhere for a a 2 week 'crash and burn on a sunbed' type holiday. Then me and DH discovered a mutual love for cruising - no airports, just drive to Southampton, someone takes your cases and the next time you see them is in your cabin, and then waking up with a new place to explore every few days - suits us down to the ground.

Having said that, we are off on a 2 week crash and burn holiday in a few weeks - DH wondered the other night how quickly one or other of us would get bored just lying around...

MinesaPinot · 03/08/2018 14:23

PS. Camping is my idea of hell by the way......

OyWithThePoodles · 03/08/2018 14:27

Yep! DP is going by himself w DCs!

LoniceraJaponica · 03/08/2018 15:03

I'm with posters who ask why go on the type of holiday you hate?

We don't like camping so we don't go. The drive to Cornwall from where we live is horrific so we don't go. OH is a bug magnet and allergic to mosquito bites so we don't go where there are mosquito born diseases.
