Not really an AIBU just really need some help! Need to get a urine sample using a standard sample bottle from my not potty trained nearly 3 yr old. I’ve done loads of samples when he was younger but none for ages and no idea how to get him to sit still until he wees so I can catch it !! He doesn’t yet know when a wee is coming so I can’t ask him to warn me. Any ideas or tips?!

If he’s still in nappies the dr should be able to give you a sheath and bag, so you put it on then put his nappy on so he will wee straight down the sheath and into the bag

WorldCupnovice · 30/07/2018 17:34

Can he sit on the potty while he is playing ?

PotteringAlong · 30/07/2018 17:35

Sanitary pad in nappy, squeeze it out into sample bottle.

NoNarnas · 30/07/2018 17:38

Take his nappy off and stand him on a brand new carpet. Kid will wee in seconds.

UmbrellaPlants · 30/07/2018 17:39

I had to do this for my daughter - the doctor basically said leave nappy off and watch her and when she starts weeing, dive in with a bowl - it worked but sure there must be a better way! Also reckon it’ll be much harder/messier with a boy 😬

Jaynesworld · 30/07/2018 17:43

Tape a sandwich bag over his bits and put his nappy on (micropore tape not sellotape). Had to do this many times with dd x

TaurielTest · 30/07/2018 17:44

Put something absorbent into nappy (like a clean flannel or muslin) - and wring it out.

Tartsamazeballs · 30/07/2018 17:47

Just been to hospital and had to do this for my 2 yr old, there's special bags with sticky plaster style openings you put over their bits. Ask your doc for one.

beachmamma · 30/07/2018 17:48

I had to do this once -I used a cotton wool pad in his nappy and then rang it out -easy

DaftCat · 30/07/2018 17:57

Ask your doctor for a bag urine sample kit. It’s basically a bag that you tape to him inside his nappy. I don’t know if a pharmacy might have them too.

VeryHangryCaterpillar · 30/07/2018 17:58

Pop some cotton pads down the front of his nappy then wring them out.

opinionatedfreak · 30/07/2018 18:03

If you are testing for infection thenyou need to catch the wee. None of the bag/pad systems are clean enough.

If for other reasons bag/pad might be acceptable... call the requesting team to ask.

muddlingalong42 · 30/07/2018 18:09

Yep, testing for a clean catch (he’s at risk of UTIs) and not allowed to do the bag, cotton wool, potty options, as it results in contaminated sample. I LOVE the new carpet suggestion 😂

Stand him in the bath with some toys and a drink. Watch him like a hawk with a cup ready.

Pinkshowerpuff · 30/07/2018 18:19

Years ago I had to do this with my daughter. Big drink then put on cbeebies with her on my lap no nappy on holding a clean plastic pot under her, didn't take too long. I'm sure a clean potty would be better but I didn't have one.

Cachailleacha · 30/07/2018 18:22

Sit him on a potty first thing in the morning or after a nap, if his nappy has been dry for a couple of hours, before a bath. Give him lots to drink. Run the tap. Tell him he needs to sit on the potty so you can catch a wee. Tell him if you can catch a wee in the potty you will give him a treat (chocolate, sticker).

Rosarollo · 30/07/2018 18:27

This is probably the only time I'd ply my child with juice. I spent an hour with a v angry baby and eneded up missing the catch as i looked away for 1 second. I explained to doc and gave me a sticky bag.

As you need a clean catch i agree with cbeebies, juice and nappy off. Let him relax. Good luck

Mammatron · 30/07/2018 19:36

Yep try the bath, this is what nurses in the hospital did for my 1 year old

MamaRaisingBoys · 30/07/2018 19:39

I think I’d go with sitting him on a potty in front of the tv with a big drink. And maybe some chocolate if I was struggling to get him to stay there!

Pastaagain78 · 30/07/2018 19:40

Stand him in the bath.

Notevilstepmother · 30/07/2018 19:43

I was advised to use a ladle for the dog Grin I don’t know if that’s any help? I reckon the new carpet is the best idea.

Queenofthestress · 30/07/2018 19:43

Stand him in the bath, for some reason wet feet & toys near enough always equals weeing in my DS and he's fully potty trained lol

GhostCurry · 30/07/2018 19:46

Get a similar-looking specimen cup and “demonstrate” (pee into it yourself). Or get your partner to. This was the only thing that worked for me when I needed a sample from my unwilling DC!

I’m amazed at the sanitary towel suggestion, god knows what else would end up in the liquid.

Pippinfi · 30/07/2018 19:47

I had to do this with my little boy when he was 2 luckily it was for a dip stick test so didn't need much. I would have a clean plastic jug so I could catching in the bath. In the hospital they had a bag with a sticker around it to catch it but it would loose it's stickiness due to the urine and come off,or be very painful for him, think a plaster around your private parts ouch.I did have some small success with small sized sandwich bags out over his willy an then happy back on. He would see directly into the bag and would be able to collect some urine although could be messy. Unfortunately potty didn't work for us at the time.

fluffyblanket17 · 30/07/2018 19:55

We did this with my nephew when he was a toddler, put his hand under a running tap he had a wee straight away
