To cancel this trip due to heatwave next week? .

I had booked flights to go to Scandinavia next week to stay with a friend. But I just seen the forecast over there and live some parts of the UK. the temperature could rise to 30°. I tend to suffer in the heat. We were planning trips out and about over there, day trips. I fear that I might really struggle with bus, coach travel, sightseeing and the general holiday movements in that heat.
I feel guilty for thinking about it. We were both looking forward. She returns to work after my return date.
If she came over here, the same heat problem might arise and I dont want to spend a week sitting in the shade and not exploring and she won't enjoy that.
I haven't told her yet as she is travelling elsewhere until I would arrive.Would it be awful if I went somewhere else, cooler, instead?
Any thoughts, any creative ideas?

YABU if you have had this planned for a while, you can't just let people down like that unless she feels the same.

YABU. Just tell her you're not up to coach trips etc. I'd be so annoyed if a friend planned a visit then just cancelled it without even discussing whether there was a way round the problem.

Well I wouldn't cancel and let someone down like this, I'd simply manage my itinerary accordingly.

That would be very unreasonable to,your friend. By all means say you’re not up to excursions but you can find a cool shady —beer— garden to sit in and talk, etc.

I feel for you, I hate the heat myself, but since you're visiting a friend who lives there, I'd just ask her to suggest activities that involve shady places, indoor places with aircon etc. Presumably you're going for the pleasure of her company as well as the activities? I'd just be honest and tell her you don't cope well with the heat but you are really looking forward to seeing her, what can she suggest as outings etc?

I think YABU. We've had a heatwave in the UK for weeks now, most of us don't have a/c in our homes and we're all getting on with it best we can. There's probably a/c on the buses and coaches etc anyway. Maybe finding that out might put your mind at ease?

You are right. I really don't want to let her down. But I do suffer in this heat and it will be hotter ie 30°. My point was that it will get even hotter. I should find out about air con on buses, etc.
I worry that I will limit the holiday for her also, as only so much sitting in the shade can be done and its a pity about missing out for her also.
I dont want to be a burden or fall ill from heat stroke which is horrible.

really? you would change plans for a week with no notice, because its a bit hot?

surely you can can just change what you are doing?

YABU. I am in Scandinavia (Norway) the moment. Forecast over 30 next week BUT it is only that hot for a few hours in the late afternoon. Mornings are pleasant at the moment and it is nice weather to get out and about. Tour buses and trains will almost certainly be air conditioned. If you are going to see the mountains, it is cooler there. You can also go to museums, malls, etc. if you are too hot outside. Swimming in lakes or in the sea is also popular in hot weather.

Where are you going in Scandinavia?

If she lives there she can always do the tours another time.....is she really likely to do them next week on her own if you don’t go? Doubtful. So she has the choice of spending her holiday not doing much without a friend or spending her holiday having a catch up with an old friend? I bet she prefers you turn up. Go, take it easy, don’t rush round. Unless you’re about to drip feed you’re 92yo with a heart condition!

I think cancelling would be a really shitty thing to do, especially so short notice.

YABVU. Being in heat on holiday is totally different to getting on with every day life. You would be letting your friend down and it probably is not as unmanageable as you imagine. Just change your plans accordingly if needed. Coaches are likely to be air conditioned and you just plan and make sure you are not without shade during the hotest part of the day. TBH Scandinavia with good weather will be amazing. Hats, water, cover up and take a steady pace. The evenings will be bliss (with repellent). Also plan to cool of in pools or lakes and enjoy. 30 degrees is not really that hot in the scheme of things (we managed Egypt in August), you just need to change the time you do things.

Buy a portable fan wear a hat and drink loads of water and maybe grow up?

YABU. Sorry, I live in a different country to most of my friends and family and any of them are welcome here any time. If any of them cancelled with a weeks notice for this reason and I had taken a week off of work I would be furious. There will be places you can go with AC including busses and trains etc. Also go swimming as someone suggested, best way to spend the day when it’s very hot, I’ve found (it’s regularly in the 30s plus here). Make sure you stay hydrated properly, sunscreen and bug spray as required, stay in the shade. You’ll be fine.

YABU. You booked a holiday in the Northern Hemisphere in late July. It is summer and there's not much difference between 27 degrees and 30. She'll be far more pissed off if you cancel than if you request a laid-back trip.

No need to be rude to the OP. I’m in Sweden and it has been desperately hot starting early in the morning too. We have over 50 forest fires raging. But holidays are different than trying to get on with ordinary life. Where are you going OP?

IT would be inexcusably rude to cancel. Just arrange your stay to include a siesta during the hottest periods if necessary.

Just have a word and see if you can scale down the sightseeing. Your friend might struggle too and be glad to take it easier.

30° is normal/cool/average where I live, so I wouldn't call it a heatwave, 38° you're getting there. Coaches will probably have aircon. I go to cafes/science museums etc because they have aircon. Just plan your visit carefully.

You would be unreasonable to cancel a trip to any Scandinavian country in the summer as they are all beautiful. There are lots of lakes in Scandiland where you can keep cool and as a pp said if you go into the mountains it will be cooler and fresher. There is plenty of tree cover in the lovely forests to keep cool under. The tour coaches will be air conditioned and you will have a great time. You will be on holiday and can tailor your itinerary according to the weather. Also, it would be very rude to let your friend down at such short notice.

It was the heat getting to me earlier and I had a splitting headache and was fighting back the nausea, symptoms of getting too hot.

To be fair, having heat stroke is horrible.

Do you have health conditions that increase your risk of heat stroke?
