To cancel this trip due to heatwave next week? .

I had booked flights to go to Scandinavia next week to stay with a friend. But I just seen the forecast over there and live some parts of the UK. the temperature could rise to 30°. I tend to suffer in the heat. We were planning trips out and about over there, day trips. I fear that I might really struggle with bus, coach travel, sightseeing and the general holiday movements in that heat.
I feel guilty for thinking about it. We were both looking forward. She returns to work after my return date.
If she came over here, the same heat problem might arise and I dont want to spend a week sitting in the shade and not exploring and she won't enjoy that.
I haven't told her yet as she is travelling elsewhere until I would arrive.Would it be awful if I went somewhere else, cooler, instead?
Any thoughts, any creative ideas?

Yabu. It’d sound like you are looking for excuses if you pull out for that reason too.

FatCow2018 · 22/07/2018 16:22

Are you sure you have actually had heat stroke before? Like actual heat stroke and not just feeling faint, sick etc because you are hot?

sonjadog · 22/07/2018 16:22

Forecast for Copenhagen is highs of 26/27 next week. You’ll be fine!

Lunde · 22/07/2018 16:24

I think it should be fine that far south. The forecast for Copenhagen is for 21-28 for the next 10 days. The south of Sweden has not been caught in the heatwave really.

Central and Northern Sweden are not so nice. I am currently 750km north of Copenhagen and the weather has been 30-34 for around a month. It is very unpleasant here and to the north where the fires are raging. There are firefighters from the whole of the EU here (a team from Poland arrived today). Last week was very unpleasant - it was 34C and windows had to be closed because of the smoke from a fire 150 km north.

ThePlanetGoesOnBeingRound3 · 22/07/2018 16:25

YABU
Yes, it would be awful if you went somewhere else cooler.
Almost everyone 'suffers' in the heat. She's back to work after your visit,
you know you're being unreasonable.
You should feel guilty for thinking of dropping her in the shit, because it's a twat's trick, and you know it.

BitOutOfPractice · 22/07/2018 16:26

Where are you thinking might be cooler?

Wauden · 22/07/2018 16:29

I do have health conditions which make me more at risk of heat stroke. To the person who said 'just grow up', I feel sorry for you.

I didnt want to be a liability; had booked trip a whole ago, then read Copenhagen forecast...

Thanks Sonjadog, sounds better temperature.

By the way for those who missed it, I will go.

I don't think you will find the heat so opressive in Copenhagen and Sweden and the air quality is better I think, so even though it will be hot you won't feel so ill, especially if you are near water or forests. Hope you have a fab time Op, I am very envious.

Lunde · 22/07/2018 16:30

Normally the coastal areas such as Copenhagen and Helsingør etc have pleasant sea breezes.

MinisterforCheekyFuckery · 22/07/2018 16:33

To be fair, having heat stroke is horrible

Agreed. But cancelling a holiday at the last minute just in case you get it is a bit daft. Surely you just take steps to minimise the risks? If OP wears a hat, carries a water bottle with her everywhere, stays out of the sun during the hottest part of the day then it's highly unlikely she will get it.

OP just explain to your friend that you're not good in the heat and will need to plan accordingly (air conditioned museums, siestas, frequent breaks from sightseeing to sit in a cafe and have a cold drink etc), I'm sure she'd much rather that than you cancel on her altogether!

Celebelly · 22/07/2018 16:33

Heat when you're on holiday is different to heat when you're trying to just get on with normal things, go to work, etc. I can happily cope with much higher temps on holiday than I can at home!

PatsyStone39 · 22/07/2018 16:39

OP, i'm living in Denmark and i'm 28 weeks pregnant, so understand your concern about the heat here spoiling things. It is warm, but it's very bearable. I'm sure that's in part due to the fact that, no matter where you go, you are never very far from the coast and a sea breeze. Copenhagen and Malmo will be lovely. I promise.

Summersup · 22/07/2018 16:44

OP if you are anything like me, you have been having a lot of sick headaches in this oppressive weather, and it's easy to panic and think you don't want to go away when you feel so awful. I tend to do this- spiral worries about the future when I have a migraine, I think you can get in a cycle of panic/fear when you are ill, especially if you have other health conditions.

It might actually be better there if the temp isn't quite so high. Take cool cotton nightclothes and carry water on you as if it were medicine! Tell your friend you have been having headaches and are a bit worried but really want to see them- just chatting with them about some more flexible options might relieve some of the anxiety.

I don't think it's silly to worry about this when you feel rubbish and there's no end in sight!

Wauden · 22/07/2018 16:48

Lunde, so sorry to hear about the fires and in Sweden now. Hope the fire fighters are able to tackle the blaze; it is a tough job for them to do in any weather. I hope you can open your windows soon again.
Agreed, it would have been a very bad choice to have cancelled. I can have another maybe, but to let down a friend like that, I cannot do.

I hate people who make plans then cancel them last minute there's no worse trait in a person

banivani · 22/07/2018 16:49

I think those areas will be more managable OP, because there’s more of a breeze near the sea! But I agree that it’s sensible to have a reasonable expectation of what you can do/what you’re able for. Be open in your communication with your friend, genuine health issues are genuine and if she sees you’re not a moaning Myrtle but you’re making an effort she won’t resent you staying at a café for a bit for example while she roams around for a bit, I think. There are many places in Sweden anyway that do NOT have air con, including trains and museums. I wouldn’t let this spoil your trip. Smile

petrolpump28 · 22/07/2018 16:51

Could you do things in the morning and take a break in the afternoons?

KokoandAllBall · 22/07/2018 16:59

Really don't worry! I went to a museum in London today and it was like being inside an oven. Scandi countries ( in fact most countries) are better about managing the heat. I bet you'll be more comfortable there than here!

Wauden · 22/07/2018 17:00

Summersup, sorry that you have had the sick headaches too. You are spot on! I do tend to worry too much... thanks for being understanding about anxiety. My health says avoid the sun at its height and I panicked..
Feel a bit better now that I have taken a pill or two.
PatsyStone, congratulations and thanks, sea breeze sounds cool.

IwantedtobeEmmaPeel, maybe you can go there some time? I hope you have a good summer. So long as you don't peelSmile
Minister, I see that now!
Cellebelly, yes and we are more positive on holiday.

Glad you're going. I also hate extreme heat - my husband loves it but I find anything over 30 terrible and can't bear to stand in the sun for even a few minutes as I easily get thumping headaches.

But obviously forecasts can change and it sounds like they have now. Have a great holiday.

leafygreens211 · 22/07/2018 17:09

@Summersup you pretty much wrote my post Grin

I also have bad migraine and it’s very hard to not panic about not being in control of triggers. I’m generally pretty chilled but get awful anxiety about going on holiday with other people

Flowers tell your friend what you’re worried about op. Explain you need to take it easy and might need to not do all planned stuff

ZenNudist · 22/07/2018 17:14

So you book to go on holiday in August then want to cancel because its hot..... okaaaaaaay.....

Plenty to do that isnt in the heat. Just do some rrsearch. You cant cancel now.

SnuggyBuggy · 22/07/2018 17:16

I feel for you. I had a long weekend with friends last year utterly ruined partly due to an unseasonal heatwave. I hope you manage to plan some activities that work for you.

3luckystars · 22/07/2018 17:17

I understand why you are thinking of canceling. I die in the heat, if I am in direct sunlight I want to get sick I cannot bear it at all. I get migraines headaches etc too and I dread going hot places.

Anyway I very nearly cancelled something recently, it was something that I had always wanted to see but there was a 30 degree full force sun forecast and I got so anxious before it, but I couldn’t cancel!

So I bought a big hat, and some big sun glasses and loads of le roche posay sunscreen and very loose clothes. I found shaded parts for as much as I could but I found when I had the big sun glasses on, I definitely did not feel as sick!! This was a revalation and I’m so glad I didn’t cancel now. I survived it!

I look at others and they are soaking it up and actually love the feeling of sun on their skin, they look so carefree, it’s the complete opposite of how I feel. I would LOVE to be like that.

Someone also told me, don’t think of the temperature around you, just concentrate on your own body temperature.

So if you get too hot, just get in to a cold bath or lie on the floor. Break the day down in to parts and be a night owl if possible. Good luck.

leafygreens211 · 22/07/2018 17:22

I also wanted to add - I’ve been so irrationally scared of being in the sun I’ve got a vitamin d deficiency. Ironically this was probably making the migraines worse Grin

Found out last week and it really did give me the push I needed to try and relax a bit
