To say no to second piercing

DD who's 13 really wants a second ear piercing. She's been asking for about a year now and at first I thought it was one of those times where she'd want it for a few weeks and then change her mind or completely forget about it. However she's still asking a year later. What age would you say is old enough for a second piercing?

I let Dd at 10 so I'm no help!

Oopsy41 · 18/07/2018 09:46

Mines the same age and am taking her on Friday when school finishes. I had mine done at that age too. I personally don't see an issue with it. I have said no to a nose piercing though

Shortstuff08 · 18/07/2018 09:49

I had my second ones done on my 13th birthday.

Personally I don't think it's a massive deal. She is old enough to know how to clean them and make the decision for herself.

If she doesn't like them in a year or so, chances are they will close over anyway.

NameChangeUni · 18/07/2018 09:52

Where is the piercing? Do you mean a second ear lobe piercing?

If so, I would let her as it is easy to take care of and heal, and will just be small studs for the first few months so very inoffensive. It’s very minor piercing in the grand scheme.

If her school will be a problem, she could just keep her jewellery in the new piercings and not in the original lobe piercings so it will just look like she has one rather than two piercings. Then wear both outside of school.

I had my second lobe piercings done around her age, maybe younger. Never caused an issue. In fact I barely wear them now.

I think 13 is fine for a second piercing. I had mine pierced for the 2nd time at 13, I don't wear earnings in the 2nd ear anymore and it's mostly closed. It hasn't ruined my ears or anything so even if she didn't like them in a few years it shouldn't matter.

InglouriousBasterd · 18/07/2018 09:53

I was 13, let her do it! Wink

19lottie82 · 18/07/2018 09:53

Why don’t you want her to? I don’t think it’s a big deal.

15star · 18/07/2018 09:54

Sorry 2nd hole not 2nd ear

Knitjob · 18/07/2018 09:55

Wouldn't bother me at all. If she already has one piercing then she knows how to care for them. I would let her get on with it.

Mousefunky · 18/07/2018 09:58

Christ, when I was 13 I got my belly button and lip pierced. The lip one was behind my mum’s back and she went mental to say the least but still Wink. Loosen up a bit, at least it’s only on her ears...

GardenRoseAutumn · 18/07/2018 09:58

I had mine done at 10, it's just ear piercing she's 13 for goodness sake, not 3!

adaline · 18/07/2018 10:00

I don't get the uproar about it personally. It's just a lobe piercing, it's not like she wants her nipple pierced!

TeenTimesTwo · 18/07/2018 10:03

More than 1 stud is not permitted at our secondary.

Gingerninj · 18/07/2018 10:03

It's partly because I wasn't allowed my ears pierced at all until i was 16 but also her school only allow one earing per ear so I don't see much point since she won't be allowed both in half the time

I had my second holes done at 11. School - which was a rather straight laced girls’ school - didn’t notice. Tiny studs are the way forwards

upsideup · 18/07/2018 10:06

I'm pretty sure in lots of places at 13 she could just go and get it done without your permission.
What are you worried about? Its not any worse than the first lobe piercing, at 30 she might decide she doesnt like it but she can just take it out leaving a tiny mark on her ear that no one will even notice.

littlepeas · 18/07/2018 10:08

My mum didn't let me so I did it myself with a needle.

madamginger · 18/07/2018 10:10

I had mine done at 14, I don’t wear them anymore and they’ve closed up now.

surlycurly · 18/07/2018 10:15

My 14 yr old wants her nose done! It's tricky because I don't particularly mind but I know that other people (narrow minded people) would make judgements about it.

happymummy12345 · 18/07/2018 10:18

I had my first when I was a baby, and my second done at 14. Then my first cartilage done at 15, second cartilage done at 16 (they were done 4 months apart, as soon as the first was healed I got my second). So I'd have no problem at all.

MrsJayy · 18/07/2018 10:22

I was 13 when i got mine done Dd1 was 12 and thenshe streched her ears at 15 imo it is their ears saying that least it isn't her face she wants done.

Sharkwithknees · 18/07/2018 10:25

If you get them done at the start of the holidays, they will have healed by the time she goes back to school. I don't see the problem

Horrordoeurvres · 18/07/2018 10:32

13 is perfectly fine for a simple ear piercing, just remember to go to a respectable piercing studio to get it done :) I got my ears pierced first time round at age 12 in a local Clares, they weren't done correctly and I ended up with both ears infected. A year later I went to a proper piercing/tattoo studio and got them re-done. Never had problem with them since then got my septum and philtrum at 16/17? I think. I still have them but I use very small minute jewellery - makes them less detectible when needed.

Teaches a little bit of responsibility as well as far as aftercare is concerned, if she doesn't like it then she can always take it out after its healed :)

chatwoo · 18/07/2018 10:33

If it's only another ear piercing, why wait?

CherriesAndGingham · 18/07/2018 10:34

I remember going through this myself as a teen...!
In a way, I think you need to be a little bit unreasonable, because then it's something harmless to rebel against. Wink
But you've made her wait a year, so that's "unreasonable" enough, iyswim. Getting them done at the start of summer is good timing as shark mentioned.

Who would be paying for it? - Can you insist she pays from pocket money/birthday money..?
