Day 3 of low carb and I can't switch off it's like I've had a lot of caffeine before bed.Is this normal?
Posted here as will get more responses than the weight loss section

I find I need much less sleep but wake feeling much more rested and refreshed. I do BSD which is low carb, low cal, high in protein and fat.

QueenOfMyWorld · 18/07/2018 08:44

So it's not a common side effect?

OP posts:
NamelessEnsign · 18/07/2018 08:45

Yeah, it’s a common side effect. It goes away though, for most people. Try the low carb threads for advice if you’re interested Smile

LalaLeona · 18/07/2018 08:46

Yes! I get total insomnia if I don't have carbs before bed. My body can't seem to switch off without that 'full' feeling

Downtheroadfirstonleft · 18/07/2018 08:46

It's quite a common side effect of fasting too. Give it 2-3 weeks and your body will become acclimatised.

QueenOfMyWorld · 18/07/2018 11:55

Thanks

Whistle73 · 18/07/2018 11:58

Yep! Am low carb and fasting. Less than 5 hours sleep a night and bags of energy! Just make the most of it and get stuff done in the evening. Don't try to go to bed too early or you risk just lying there tossing and turning for two hours.

QueenOfMyWorld · 18/07/2018 15:37

Does low carb really help with weight loss?

OP posts:
welshmist · 18/07/2018 15:43

I thrash around sometimes. If I am still awake after a couple of hours I give in and have a glass of cold milk, that works for me.

namechangeforquestion · 18/07/2018 15:45

Wish - No milk on low carb!

Very common on low carb - enjoy it! Be more productive!

Sgtmajormummy · 18/07/2018 15:48
is very interesting about the good and bad effects of Keto (low carb high fat)dieting. Funny, too.
Whistle73 · 18/07/2018 16:30

Does low carb really help with weight loss?

Yes! 100% if you do it right.
Re the insomnia, I find during fasting or low-carbing that I can drink too much water and this can stop me sleeping. A pinch of salt before bed often works wonders.

QueenOfMyWorld · 18/07/2018 21:17

That's interesting re the salt I'll try it

silversfish · 18/07/2018 21:19

low carb is a load of crap just burn more calories than you take in and you lose weight

Whistle73 · 18/07/2018 21:25

Yes SilverFish that's true too, but if you are insulin resistant and a carb addict like me calorie controlled diets are a nightmare and almost impossible to stick to.

Low carb breaks the cycle of sugar spikes and lows, perpetual snacking, constant cravings and lack of willpower.

It doesn't suit everyone but it absolutely suits me.

Fuzzyend · 18/07/2018 21:30

Same here Whistle!

BrassicaBabe · 18/07/2018 21:41

LC suits me down to the ground too!

QueenOfMyWorld · 19/07/2018 08:31

Hi I slept better last night.Ive always done calorie counting but I found was eating carbs constantly, with this I def feel less hungry and my bloating has gone

OP posts:
geekone · 19/07/2018 08:46

Some people are good on low carb some not it actually depends on what you can stick to. I know my body processes fat really well and I lose weight on a high fat low(ish) carb diet. However I also can’t run as far when I am out running but I can lift more weights and do some quick hiit. I like to run though so today marmalade roll for breakfast 😈.
By reducing your carbs you will be watching what you eat @sliversfish which is why it works for some anything that makes you mindful of your food intake and that you are happy living like forever will make you lose weight. The problem is just cutting out all the things we love to have a caloric deficit makes people fed up and binge eat back to their old weight.

Good luck op (I never had an issue sleeping) but I generally have complex carbs) one meal a day on the days I am excercising so that may be why.

AlphaBravo · 19/07/2018 08:49

Yeah its part of the keto flu. Even after then you'll need much less sleep.

Loyaultemelie · 19/07/2018 11:37

Low carb suits me well but I am on medication now which means weight gain so I'm finding I really crave them. Willpower being tested! The only good thing about it is it knocks me out so counteracts the sleeplessness a bit

QueenOfMyWorld · 19/07/2018 12:19

Weirdly I'm not craving carbs I feel a bit lightheaded though

OP posts:
UtterlyUnimaginativeUsername · 19/07/2018 12:26

Low carb suits me because I'm tyoe 2 diabetic and since starting, my blood sugar has stabilised, my blood pressure, cholesterol and liver function have returned to normal - and I'm losing weight. It's a very healthy load of crap and I'm going to do it forever : )

I do find it makes me sleep less. I also dream a LOT more. But I feel good despite the changed sleep.

bridgetreilly · 19/07/2018 12:35

It's not weird that you aren't craving carbs. Carb cravings are a reaction to eating carbs. When you cut carbs out, the cravings stop and you suddenly realise that real hunger feels quite different from the carb craving.

bridgetosomewhere · 19/07/2018 12:39

I sleep a lot less as well and need less and less sleep.
Keeps my weight in check and dh’s sugar levels stable too
