School uniform and buying new each year

Justtheonequestion · 14/07/2018 18:11

Does everyone buy everything new each year? Blazers shirts trousers jumpers pe kits shoes trainers socks bags everything?
Ive done so in the past but it seems daft to dispose of the stuff which is still ok.
Wibu to just replace the obvious bits, ie buying 3 shirts each and new shoes, rather than everything? Or will that make them look scruffy?

God no, only when it actually needs replacing

LearningCrochetTipsNeeded · 14/07/2018 18:13

Always get new shirts but everything else is only replaced if it's got holes in or doesn't fit anymore

ThePricklySheep · 14/07/2018 18:14

I buy it when it’s too small or has holes in. Through the year or in September.

Clayhead · 14/07/2018 18:15

No, never have. Just buy as and when it needed replacing. Dd did five years of high school on one PE kit and two skirts. She had one replacement blazer and few new shirts. I was lucky she did most of her growing in year six!

Invisimamma · 14/07/2018 18:18

Mine is only 7 so nothing fits at the end of term, or is stained/holes, so new everything. Although we do reuse things like PE bag if they’re still in good condition.

Also some bits in reasonable condition are stored away for ds2.

daisypond · 14/07/2018 18:20

No, never. DD's blazer lasted through five years of secondary school and still looked decent. I bought a few new shirts along the way, probably a couple of new skirts, and one or two extra jumpers in the whole time. PE kit lasted the whole way through, apart from trainers, etc.

kitkatsky · 14/07/2018 18:21

Yes, but DD is only 7 and grows like a weed so needs new stuff once a year!

ReadingRiot · 14/07/2018 18:22

No, only when needed, which could be because it's tatty or because it doesn't fit. Sometimes Shock I buy it other than during the summer holiday Grin

TeenTimesTwo · 14/07/2018 18:24

No. At secondary, DD1 did 5 full years with one blazer and the same PE kit. DD2 is going to get at least 3 years from her blazer.

Somerville · 14/07/2018 18:24

Generally my kids are showing too much wrist and ankle by the summer term, and have completely grown out of it all by the time I try it on again in August. But I do re-use anything in good condition that I can, or pass it down to a sibling. I hate waste.

SardinesAreYum · 14/07/2018 18:24

No I buy when they need new ie have grown out or it's knackered.

I do check it over properly for each new term though as sometimes e.g. their shoes have got too small but they haven't told me.

UndertheCedartree · 14/07/2018 18:26

Most of my daughter's uniform comes from the school 2nd hand shop - so not much is new! In September I'll replace the bits that she has outgrown. Will definitely need new school shoes, trainers and plimsolls and probably a few of the smaller polo shirts will be worn out. I'll get any dresses or cardigans/fleeces she needs from the school 2nd hand shop.

OkMaybeNot · 14/07/2018 18:28

Of course not! Except polo shirts. You don't realise how grey they are until you have a browse in the uniform aisle and the new ones blind you.

Sloegin2 · 14/07/2018 18:28

Yes but generally because the clothes are outgrown over the year, however mine are still at Primary.

SnuggyBuggy · 14/07/2018 18:28

Don't people buy big and take up hems anymore?

Justtheonequestion · 14/07/2018 18:29

Thanks. In primary id get new every yr but now theyre in secondary no. As they 'need' new (nike) bags, so dont want to waste money on what they dont need.
Did you sort it out at end of term?

YoucancallmeVal · 14/07/2018 18:30

Dd got through a zillion polo shirts because she could not hold a white board pen without scribbling on herself. Other than that, replaced when absolutely necessary. Luckily a pair of shoes tends to last a year.

YoucancallmeVal · 14/07/2018 18:32

I will be sorting hers when she finishes next week as I've been caught out with not ordering secondary bits early enough so gives me time though shoes I leave as late as possible.

HarryDresdensLeatherDuster · 14/07/2018 18:34

Good god no! I have only replaced lost stuff or things they have grown out of. Why on earth would you replace uniform that still fits???

HSMMaCM · 14/07/2018 18:36

I used to buy what needed replacing and bought it all a bit big in the first place. I gave the old clothes to the school.

champagneplanet · 14/07/2018 18:41

Only if she needs a bigger size or things need freshening up. I buy as she needs. I do always buy a new logo cardigan each year, that way she has two on the go all the time. We got through the last two winters in the same coat.

DD is only 7 though so growing and I can keep everything for DD2.

neversleepagain · 14/07/2018 18:43

No. My twins are going to year 1. I am buying new shoes, tights and polo shirts. The rest still fits and in good condition.

funinthesun18 · 14/07/2018 18:45

I just replace the bits that need replacing. New shoes are a definite every year.

funinthesun18 · 14/07/2018 18:49

Don't people buy big and take up hems anymore

I cant be bothered faffing around with that Grin

SugarIsAmazing · 14/07/2018 18:50

In primary I'd buy new uniform but I'd keep any outgrown uniform for the younger siblings, but they'd each have new for September. But not bags or lunchboxes, and pe kits were only replaced if they didn't fit.
