School uniform and buying new each year

Justtheonequestion · 14/07/2018 18:11

Does everyone buy everything new each year? Blazers shirts trousers jumpers pe kits shoes trainers socks bags everything?
Ive done so in the past but it seems daft to dispose of the stuff which is still ok.
Wibu to just replace the obvious bits, ie buying 3 shirts each and new shoes, rather than everything? Or will that make them look scruffy?

I won't ever buy new if I can help it - everything hand me down or from the second hand shop. I think the only thing I've had to get new are socks, shoes and bookbags with the school name on since the Velcro seems to die so quickly. I had planned for DS2 to get all of the stuff DS1 grows out of but they are the same size Angry

lljkk · 14/07/2018 20:56

I don't mind being scruffy.
Another one of those threads where I probably don't have anything useful to say.
Funny enough... I'm trying to sell some (20+ pairs) 2nd hand school trousers to benefit the PTA. I bet no one buys them, no matter how cheap or good quality, BNWT, trendy brands, even so. :(

BackforGood · 14/07/2018 20:59

I'm in the "eh?? Why would you?" group of thinking. Am amazed anyone would buy new uniform if you were lucky enough for it not to be outgrown.

I notice very MC families often have the scruffiest uniform

I think this is true. Those families have no compunction about using second hand sales, and passing clothing on to siblings (uniform and the rest - so they tend to have lesser pink) and between friends.

I think I must officially be middle class then Grin

Just on a basis of thrift, buying new when an item does not need replacing just because it's September, strikes me as profligate.

Me too. I can't get my head round that concept.

AlexanderHamilton · 14/07/2018 21:00

This year has been very frustrating. Ds changed schools in September so had to have new everything but after two years of hardly growing had a massive growth spurt & I had to replace the whole lot by Easter.

jmh740 · 14/07/2018 21:00

Youngest 2 still at primary, the jumpers cardigans with school logo I replace when needed. Trousers and shirts I buy a new pair of trousers and a couple of new shirts in September and mix them with the older ones.

Snappedandfarted2018 · 14/07/2018 21:01

Both my dcs birthdays are summer so I buy ready for the next age size. If there previous uniform is still in good nick they wear that until it’s too small normally after a term or two and wear the new uniforms.

Tulipsinbloom · 14/07/2018 21:02

Surely if their in secondary they don't want to looking all new ad shiny when they go back in September? That was a look only for the new students in my school, everyone else wore their 'worn in' uniform and maybe got a new bag and shoes. I had one pleated skirt and tie for the 6 years of secondary school (not in the UK) because they were expensive.

BluthsFrozenBananas · 14/07/2018 21:09

My DD will be going into y6, I really don’t want to buy more than the bare minimum this year, she’s an only child so not even siblings to pass onto. I’ll be getting a couple of pairs of trousers, tights, shoes and P.E shorts.

Amazingly she’s still wearing some of her polos from reception! They’re logoed ones in a dark colour and they seem completely indestructible. They come up really wide and boxy so although they’re getting a bit short they’re not tight.

RB68 · 14/07/2018 21:16

You change it when needed. DD lasted 2 years with just one new pair of socks for PE (feet grew so had shoes as well) but we have had to have a new skirt earlier this term and already out of that so now have some larger diff style skirts which will hopefully last a bit longer. She is protesting about size of new blazer but by sept I think it will be fine. Shirts seem OK for now but may need shoes by sept as well...

elliejjtiny · 14/07/2018 21:16

I buy new stuff for ds1 throughout the year, whenever he outgrows them. Younger dc get stuff handed down mostly although I replace things when they get worn out. They normally get a new bag for reception, year 3 and year 7 unless very worn.

CtrlCandCtrlV · 14/07/2018 21:19

no, the summer break is only 6 weeks long here, why would I buy anything new?

I replace things when needed, it's a bit weird to let the kids finish the year with uniforms that look ridiculously small and worn out shoes then start another year with clothes 2 sizes too big.
If something needs replacing or they need the bigger size, I'll just buy it then. They have random growth spurts, so there doesn't seem to be any logic as when they suddenly need a bigger size.

DontCallMeBaby · 14/07/2018 21:30

DD has got to the end of year 9 on two school skirts. In fact she’s done the last year on ONE as the zip bust on the other and I refuse to mend it - as I bought the next size up before year 8, so if she wants an extra skirt she can have one that’s not a belt. Hmm

New shirts for year 8 (she grew boobs) that still fit, new blazer in year 9 that might last the rest of school. Same PE kit for three years, same summer polos, shoes when needed and tights ... about fortnightly. Sigh.

LearningCrochetTipsNeeded · 14/07/2018 21:35

I would love for my dd to last more than 1 year in her skirts but as the rules are the skirts must sit on the knee and in 2 years she has shot up from a 29" inside leg to a 33" inside leg it wasn't possible to eek them out. I'm hoping we can get a few years wear out of the next ones!

Zoflorabore · 14/07/2018 21:43

I buy both of mine everything new for the new school year, always have done.

Ds is 15 and will start year 11 in September. His blazer is the only thing that lasted more than one year, was new for year 7 and used it for year 8. He then needed a bigger one for year 9 and another for year 10 but this year he has lost nearly 4 stones so am looking forward to an easy time shopping for uniform. He's a big lad, well over 6ft, built like a rugby player and has a size 14 shoe! Is a nightmare.

Dd is 7, she's going into year 3. She needs new uniform, is a total scruff and her polo's are white ( I do replace every term ) and her feet have recently gone from a size 1 to a size 2.

We have nobody to pass uniform to so tend to send it to the local charity shop, obviously all of the non stained good stuff!

Both dc love going for their uniform and stationery. We make a day of it and go for lunch. We do it separately too so each of them has my full attention.

I don't know anyone who doesn't buy new and we live in a pretty deprived area so the above comments about the MC not caring as much are probably true.

rainingcatsanddog · 14/07/2018 21:44

I buy when they grow out of stuff. Ds2 has new trousers a month ago and new shoes 3 months ago so will not need anything. Dd has stopped growing and keeps stiff in good nick so won't need anything either.

Metoodear · 14/07/2018 21:44

No way

I have got the following
New shirts
Tights
Socks
Shoes
And new plimsolls
That is all I am not rockafella

BakedBeans47 · 14/07/2018 21:46

Usually yes as the old stuff is usually only fit for the bin but this year I am reusing what I can. Not buying new schoolbags etc either. I bought the eldest a new jacket as he’s starting high school so different colours and they’ll both need shoes

Marmelised · 14/07/2018 22:17

I have girls 2 years apart. I got 4 years out of each uniform item. Oldest wore for 2 years then still looked fine and youngest wore for 2 years.
Didn’t work in secondary as they were more the same height but fine for primary - and then my friends daughter got another 2 years out of the dresses, blouses and skirts.

woodhill · 14/07/2018 22:21

No only when needed

AtomicSquirrel · 14/07/2018 22:36

Hell no! Skirts, trousers, blazers, ties, jumpers are worn until they either don't fit or have holes in them. I buy new shirts at the start of the year.

tor8181 · 14/07/2018 23:44

we home educate, been doing it since autumn 2015 and my kids(13 and 7) uniform are either their skin or pants(both kids have multiple complex disabilities each and hate the feel of clothes)

since september my 7 y old has gone up 4 clothes sizes(now 13-14) and 3 shoe sizes(1-4)

the 13 y old has grown 7 inches already and went from a 13-14 to mans m and a 7-12 shoe

i would hate to think about the money i would have spent on uniform

Caroline19834 · 15/07/2018 00:07

Same PE kit for three years
Same here until about 2 weeks ago, but I thought I'm not buying new PE kit for the last three weeks. Luckily she was wearing knickers that just looked like she had short shorts on for that lesson!

Justtheonequestion · 15/07/2018 09:27

Well ive sorted it. Trousers are fine, one has 3 good shirts so will buy 2 new. The next one goes up to high school but just need shirts. Will buy one new pair of trousers for fiirst day for both.
Pe kits are fine
Blazers for both fine, ds2 has new.
Ds3 needs everything.
All need new shoes and trainers, and bags.
