Is this racist?

A post on a local forum describes a woman knocking on people's doors asking for money to get to hospital to see her sister and warns local residents that the person seemed suspicious and they assume it is a scam.

Description includes approx height, hairstyle, slim build, and mentions person seems to be afro caribbean ethnicity.

A few people reply saying thanks for the warning, I've seen this person before bla bla.

Then someone replies Unfortunately a lot of Africans tend to do this - I have had the same problem- please don’t give any money to them

Is the last post racist?

I’m an African, I don’t go round knocking on doors, begging for money - make of that what you will.

Rollonweekend · 11/07/2018 08:02

Yes that comment is racist.

IStillMissBlockbuster · 11/07/2018 08:03

Well it's a bullshit generalisation so yeah

KirstenRaymonde · 11/07/2018 08:04

Yes of course it’s racist.

Singlenotsingle · 11/07/2018 08:04

Depends...is it true?

applesisapple5 · 11/07/2018 08:05

It's prejudice and discrimination based on race.... yes it's racist 🙄

Claraetal · 11/07/2018 08:06

It’s stupid at least. Africa is a continent that Afro-Carribean people don’t come from.

Rollonweekend · 11/07/2018 08:09

is it true

Do you know any African people? That is such an insulting comment - what is wrong with you? You do realise that there are a vast majority of educated cultured, law abiding people in Africa or have you never travelled beyond Magaluf or broadened your mind/read anything but the Daily Mail?

littlecabbage · 11/07/2018 08:12

Of course it's racist!

Zippetydoodahzippetyay · 11/07/2018 08:17

Of course it's racist. Anything which negatively stereotypes a group of people like that based on the actions of an individual is racist.

Troutfin · 11/07/2018 08:19

We've had this several times over the years but even though we live in a diverse area, it's only ever been white people trying it on.

Not only is that comment racist, it is also complete bollocks (as bigotry usually is).

ScrubTheDecks · 11/07/2018 08:20

Yes of course it is racist.

And of course it is not true that ‘a lot’ of people of African descent or nationality of an African country that live here knock on people’s doors scamming them.

Nor is it true that the majority of scammers of this type are of African descent / nationals of African countries.

Perfectly reasonable to give a factual description of tne person.
Response: racist bollocks.

onedayiwillmissthis · 11/07/2018 08:37

🤨 Really, you have to ask?

nervousnails · 11/07/2018 08:37

Hell yes! And you need to call them out on that comment. Twats.

Mrsharrison · 11/07/2018 09:40

If the description was of a white person, would anyone have commented "a lot of white people do this"?
Of course it's racist.
Also, doorstep crime and burglary artifice is rarely carried out by black people because of presumed racism from the house owner.
I used to do crime reporting and not once did I come across a non white person carrying out this type of crime.

Mumto2two · 11/07/2018 10:38

Sounds like an ignorant generalisation to me. Around here we have had quite a few issues with the travelling community, so there have often been negative comments generalising them in a negative way. Perhaps the issues are caused by a larger minority...which perhaps reinforces people’s overall view, but I’m guessing most people wouldn’t assume they were being racist...just a thought!

Lweji · 11/07/2018 10:40

Definitely.

Did you write it?

French2019 · 11/07/2018 10:41

It is obviously racist, yes. Have you challenged it?

ghostyslovesheets · 11/07/2018 10:41

No of course it's not racist to claim a whole race of people tend to do bad things Hmm

I'm surprised you needed to ask OP

PalePinkSwan · 11/07/2018 10:41

Obviously it’s racist.

FeralBeryl · 11/07/2018 10:48

Shock seriously? Of course it is!

Dandeliontea123 · 11/07/2018 10:54

Yes.

Warning people about a particular known person is one thing, but the comment was racist, and also shows a great deal of ignorance about history and geography.

Willowcat77 · 11/07/2018 10:58

Obviously racist, quite shocking!

LaMainDeFatima · 11/07/2018 11:05

Yes on two accounts : mixing Afro Caribbean ethnicity with being African. It’s not the same thing : some Africans aren’t black and being Afro Caribbean doesn’t mean that their heritage is necessarily in Africa.

Two : is the phrase “a lot of” which annoys me as well. How many is that, based on what research and what percentage in relation to the number of Africans loving in the world?

Bet they voted for Brexit

MimpiDreams · 11/07/2018 11:05

Of course it's racist. I'm somewhat gobsmacked at the fact you even need to ask.
