Is this racist?

A post on a local forum describes a woman knocking on people's doors asking for money to get to hospital to see her sister and warns local residents that the person seemed suspicious and they assume it is a scam.

Description includes approx height, hairstyle, slim build, and mentions person seems to be afro caribbean ethnicity.

A few people reply saying thanks for the warning, I've seen this person before bla bla.

Then someone replies Unfortunately a lot of Africans tend to do this - I have had the same problem- please don’t give any money to them

Is the last post racist?

There are more than a billion Africans. How many of these people 'tend' to be scammers? How stupid do you have to be to think this is okConfused

Mumto2two · 11/07/2018 11:09

Bet they voted for brexit???

What’s that got to do with it? Hmm

Gilead · 11/07/2018 11:09

Yep, racist.

Bombardier25966 · 11/07/2018 11:12

I read the OP as meaning "I think this is racist, AIBU?" not questioning whether it was or not.

The only people I've ever had knocking at the door asking for money (late at night, for a taxi home) have been white males. I wouldn't assume all white males were dodgy as a result, but sadly some seem it acceptable to talk in these terms about minority groups. Look at Alan Sugar and his post about the Senegal football team.

KC225 · 11/07/2018 11:13

'Bet they voted for Brexit'

And talking of bigoted mass generalisations.

SlartiAardvark · 11/07/2018 11:14

Is it true for that area - each area has different demographics. Up here, for example, it'd be Eastern Europeans - so if you were going to put a description out of the perps, you'd use that in it.

But that's a bit different to saying "all Eastern Europeans do it" - it's just the ones that knock on your door....

GorgonLondon · 11/07/2018 11:16

Yes

FourFriedChickensDryWhiteToast · 11/07/2018 11:17

obviously it is racist.
Personally I have never had 'an African' knocking at my door for money.

FermatsTheorem · 11/07/2018 11:26

Obviously racist. And I'm distinctly Hmm that you even have to ask the question.

Secretsquirrel252 · 11/07/2018 11:29

Yes

howrudeforme · 11/07/2018 11:29

Yup - and the poster has their racism on show on the web forever.

Dottierichardson · 11/07/2018 11:29

Talk about 'stupid' questions, of course it is, it's a blatantly offensive stereotype.

upsideup · 11/07/2018 11:43

Hmm I dont neccesarily think its racist, In that local area they were talking about it might be true? They said they were having the same problem.
If there was a group of men in one area all invloved in one scam would it be sexist to say unfortuantely here a lot of men are doing this, please don't give any money to them?

TrudeauGirl · 11/07/2018 13:22

Of course that statement is racist.

Topseyt · 11/07/2018 13:31

Yes, I would call it racist.

The person who wrote it must also be pretty bloody ignorant, as being Afro-Caribbean is not the same as being African.

I hope you pulled them up on it, if that was possible.

Ghanagirl · 11/07/2018 13:39

Singlenotsingle
Gosh do you say stupid things like that in real life?

badatusernames · 11/07/2018 14:25

Yes

Gilead · 11/07/2018 15:02

Hmm I dont neccesarily think its racist, In that local area they were talking about it might be true? They said they were having the same problem.
No, still racist.
If there was a group of men in one area all invloved in one scam would it be sexist to say unfortuantely here a lot of men are doing this, please don't give any money to them?
Not remotely equivalent.

katiegoestoaldi · 11/07/2018 15:04

I'd say it was a generalisation rather than racist

Trinity66 · 11/07/2018 15:06

yes

Trinity66 · 11/07/2018 15:06

a racist generalistaion

RosieWoodChelt · 11/07/2018 15:09

I think it is highly racist and very offensive. I would be ashamed to even see such a remark and I am saddened.

Lweji · 11/07/2018 15:21

@LinkyPlease

Why the question?

LinkyPlease · 11/07/2018 15:47

Sorry about the slow reply, I'm at a new job so trying not to play on my phone during work hours.

I'm glad most people think this is racist, I agree. I was intrigued to see how many, if any, people would think it wasn't racist.

I have reported the comment to the board moderators citing racism as the reason, its not deleted yet. I will chase up. I feel a bit nervous calling out the racism on the board itself just because it isn't anonymous and has my street name, and I've only recently moved here so haven't got the lay of the land yet. I'm surprised and disappointed noone else has called it out, but since I haven't I guess I can't complain too much.

I just wanted to see if there was any scope for ambiguity in anyone's mind, and it seems pretty much not.

OP good luck, sorry I misinterpreted the question, clearly not 'stupid'.
