Hi all my left foot swelled up last Friday I have a red mark on my ankle and bruising across the top of my foot. I went to the GP on call on Saturday he sent me off with some naproxen told me to see my gp if it didn’t go down by the Monday the swelling had started spreading up my leg and it was getting rock hard so I went to see my doctor who sent me up to A&E incase it was a blood clot. I saw the DVT nurse they checked me over and basically said it’s my weight causing it which really pissed me off. I don’t know what to do anymore my foot is that swollen it’s not going down when I have it up and the naproxen are doing nothing. I just want someone to take me seriously enough to check it out and not blame it on my —fucking— weight.

Could you be having a severe reaction to a bite?

I don’t know @LucyAutum no seems to want to take it at all seriously I’m just getting fobbed off and told it’s to do with my weight but my weight wouldn’t causing bruising and swelling.

Singlenotsingle · 05/07/2018 23:07

It doesn't sound like a blood clot. It could be a bite, maybe a tick or a spider. I think you need to get a second opinion.

Shootfirstaskquestionslater · 05/07/2018 23:07

@zzzz weight doesn’t cause bruising and i’m trying to lose weight.

OP posts:
Shootfirstaskquestionslater · 05/07/2018 23:08

I will try to @singlenotsingle just fed up of just not being listened to or taken seriously feel like i’m suppose to go off quietly and forget about it.

Have you tried taking a couple of antihistamines to see if it mitigates an allergic reaction ?

welshmist · 05/07/2018 23:11

It sounds like a bite. Go back and say you might have been bitten. Do not be fobbed off by your weight, you know your own body.

Shootfirstaskquestionslater · 05/07/2018 23:15

@JennyHolzersGhost I already take them for other allergies but thank you for that suggestion.

Thank you @welshmist I will try that anything is worth a shot if it gets me taken seriously and not treated with your fat go home.

Maybe it is your weight, maybe it isn't. Why its happening is only one side of this.

The second side and more importantly, in my opinion, is how can you fix this? The doctor told you its your weight but what did they give you any treatment? Suggest how you can make the swelling go down? Surely they didn't just send you on your way with no treatment??

Geekynzmum · 05/07/2018 23:20

Try putting some antihistamine cream on as that may help if it's a reaction.
Also try ice packs to help bring down the swelling. Part of the issue may be that all the hot weather is causing some of the swelling, in which case the ice packs will help with that.
Hope you get this solved soon!

HyacinthsBucket70 · 05/07/2018 23:25

RICE treatment - Rest, Ice, Compression and Elevation.

Keep off it as much as possibe, ice packs wrapped in tea towels, keep it raised, and try a support bandage if you can bear it.

If it's no better after a few days of that, go back. Just bear in mind that Naproxen takes about 7 days to get into your system and do its thing.

Shootfirstaskquestionslater · 05/07/2018 23:32

@Poptart24 I was just sent away twice without any treatment and with no idea what’s causing it.

Thank you @Geekynzmum I will try that and see if it helps anything is worth trying. Thank you so do I. Just wish I knew what was going on.

@HyacinthsBucket70 I will try that I have been elercating it but now not even that is helping with the swelling but I will give the ice packs and a compression banadage a try. I didn’t know that about the naproxen thank you.

There is no way it's your weight of it's only one foot.

I have swelling or had on one foot. I saw my consultant (I'm diabetic) who informed me it's either bad shoes or I have a tumour in my stomach pressing on something (he did say...).

It was my shoes.

If you have bruising, it sounds like a bite. Phone NHS direct and get an appt at walk in and make sure you say that A&e sent you home.

If it's still spreading go tonight!

Shootfirstaskquestionslater · 05/07/2018 23:40

@user1471530109 thank you I will go back to A&E and hopefully this time someone does something for me they can’t just keep sending me home without investigating it.

That’s how big my foot is getting.

It sounds serious, please get help. Sorry you were not helped the first time.

Shootfirstaskquestionslater · 05/07/2018 23:44

Thank you @italiangreyhound I will do and this time I won’t let them fob me off. I can’t walk properly because my foot doesn’t flex because of the swelling so now it’s starting to affect my knee as well.

Want2beme · 05/07/2018 23:46

I had something very similar but not the bruising. The arch/instep of my foot was really painful and my ankle was swollen. The consultant I saw told me that it was weight related, to elevate my leg and rest it as much as possible, I wasnt prescribed any medication. I'd been walking a lot to get fit and he told me that walking was a bad idea and I should swim instead.

Shootfirstaskquestionslater · 05/07/2018 23:50

@want2beme it’s my ankle that’s painful and I have the bruise across the top of my foot and no one seems to have an answer as to what’s causing it. It can go right up the back of my leg.

OP posts:
ferrier · 05/07/2018 23:51

The elevation should take it above the level of your heart so if you haven't done that then start doing it now.

Shootfirstaskquestionslater · 05/07/2018 23:55

@ferrier I have been getting it up but I will get it a bit high with more pillows and see if that helps thank you.

PolkaHots · 05/07/2018 23:56

Why are you so resistant to the idea that it is caused by your weight?

keyboardkate · 06/07/2018 00:00

If it is only on one side, would that indicate that there is no underlying thing going on? Like kidney issues or that.

Not a medic or anything like that, but that looks awful. Because it is just on one foot/leg I'd guess a bite or something infectious. Get thee to a place where they will evaluate it and prescribe A/bs pronto.

I hope you will be ok.

Mummyoflittledragon · 06/07/2018 00:01

That looks very swollen. Can you give us a comparison to the other foot to see how much it has swollen? Imo they should be checking for oedema. It can be dangerous. Here there is some nhs information about oedema and causes.

The other thing is could you possibly have broken a bone? Did you hurt or twist your ankle recently or do something, which could have caused a break? I know that sounds implausible but some people do break things and not know about it for a while.

thequeenoftarts · 06/07/2018 00:03

Any pain or numbness? Does that part of your leg/foot feel different to the rest of your leg/foot?
Have you hit your leg or foot recently?
Have you fallen?
Have you been wearing support stockings or been on wafarin or blood thinners or been immobile for a while?
Please go back and get it checked out asap,it may be your weight yes,, it may be compartment syndrome and being overweight can cause this too. Hopefully I am wrong but get it checked to be sure.

Best of luck xx
