Hi all my left foot swelled up last Friday I have a red mark on my ankle and bruising across the top of my foot. I went to the GP on call on Saturday he sent me off with some naproxen told me to see my gp if it didn’t go down by the Monday the swelling had started spreading up my leg and it was getting rock hard so I went to see my doctor who sent me up to A&E incase it was a blood clot. I saw the DVT nurse they checked me over and basically said it’s my weight causing it which really pissed me off. I don’t know what to do anymore my foot is that swollen it’s not going down when I have it up and the naproxen are doing nothing. I just want someone to take me seriously enough to check it out and not blame it on my —fucking— weight.

Thank you @sugarplumfairy65.

@Jellyslice you would think that it warranted investigation but no they just don’t want to listen. Thank you maybe that is my problem I just wish I knew what it was.

Have you finished any treatment?

I stopped steroids and my feet (albeit both) swelled up.

Fintress · 06/07/2018 08:35

know that sounds implausible but some people do break things and not know about it for a while.

Definitely and I'm living proof. I had an extremely sore foot but only when lifting it to walk. No swelling, no pain at rest, no pain when I pressed the 'sore' bit. Eventually went for an x-ray after 6 weeks as it wasn't improving. Turns out I have 3 fractured metatarsals. Nothing they can do now as they are starting to heal. Still having pain but it's much better than it was. No idea how it happened.

sunshinejourney · 06/07/2018 09:01

Ive had that exact problem with my left foot for years. It was absolutely awful, and always a million times worse in the heat. I hate to be the bearer of bad news, but I've lost three stone since New Years and it's never swollen that much again - touch wood!

Homebird8 · 06/07/2018 09:49

I’m skinny but if I get bitten by something I swell up just like that and can’t bend ankles etc.

chocolatemademefat · 06/07/2018 09:56

Being overweight does cause discolouration and bruising - or what looks like it - on lower legs. Look at overweight people - women in particular and this can be the case. Don’t know if it’s anything to do with water retention but it’s something I have and I make sure I moisturise religiously because the skin can thin. Hopefully it’s something treatable in your case but it’s yet another downside of carrying too much weight as I know to my cost!

Mummyoflittledragon · 06/07/2018 10:19

Hopefully you’re at the docs now. Let us know how you get on.

BrazzleDazzleDay · 06/07/2018 11:05

They don't look drastically different to me either, toes are perhaps a bit swollen. Op from a previous thread you've said that your bmi is 48.5, I think that at some point that you're going to have to accept that the nurse is quite likely right and you're putting immense pressure on your body.

sunshinewithabitofdrizzle · 06/07/2018 11:22

My foot/ankle went like that (with bruising) when I tore some ligaments in my foot after a fall. I didn't have any treatment for it as the fall caused some other major injuries to other parts of my body that were more urgent and the foot was ignored. I didn't have compression bandages or anything (didn't even think of them to be honest) but it was winter so I wore some boots that helped compress the swelling and helped a lot.

Anyway, your issue may be something similar or not, but either way I wouldn't let them fob you off if you're worried about it, they should investigate.

Shootfirstaskquestionslater · 06/07/2018 14:09

Thank you everyone I’m at the hospital again waiting for an X-ray to find out what is going on with me.

My ankles are swelling in the heat. It's never happened to me before, even when I've been in very hot countries. I am fairly sedentary now, due to disability, and am also therefore fatter than I have ever been before. If they had said to me that the swelling was due to my weight I would believe, but that's because it's BOTH ankles.

With just one ankle/leg involved it does seem far more likely that it's due to specific damagethan to a systemic condition, iyswim.

Shootfirstaskquestionslater · 06/07/2018 16:18

Thank you @Jux if it was both I would’ve accepted that it was caused by my weight but with it being just one I just find it hard to believe that it’s to do with that. They have done X-rays and nothing is broken so they think it’s jiay soft tissue damage or my ligaments and it could’ve happened when I’ve been out walking.

Jux · 06/07/2018 17:05

Well, I'm glad they've ruled out a break. Hope it recovers quickly. Cold compresses, then!

welshmist · 06/07/2018 17:13

I tore ligaments in my ankle falling down some stairs at work. The hospital gave me crutches and instructions otherwise to keep it elevated. Can you get some crutches.

QuaverQueen · 06/07/2018 17:15

I get terribly swollen feet in the heat, the left one is always much worse.
Sadly, in my case, it’s because I’m obese.

mrsm43s · 06/07/2018 17:29

My ankles (especially the left) have swollen a little in this heat (nothing like the amount yours has, though). It's never happened to me before, and I'm overweight, so I just think it's extreme heat and the weight together that are causing it.

Are you sure it's an injury rather than water retention? Because the treatment would be different. If it's water retention, diuretics would probably help.

Mummyoflittledragon · 06/07/2018 18:52

Glad they’ve given you the clear against a break, cellulitis, oedema etc.

Keeps it elevated as much as possible. Apply ice regularly but no longer than about 14/20 mins to help reduce swelling. As a pp said crutches are probably a good idea to I ve the injured area a rest.

Shootfirstaskquestionslater · 06/07/2018 19:34

Thank you @Jux and @mummyoflottledragon. @welshmist No I didn’t get any crutches and I didn’t feel like arguing that point with them it’s taken me this long to get it seen to they have bandaged me up and just sent me on my way but that’s better than nothing I guess. They have told me to keep it up and rest it to help with the swelling I will try applying ice to it as well. @mrs43s yes it’s an injury I’ve had it x raged at the hospital and they said it’s just soft tissue damage I just have to rest it and it will heal up on it’s own they said I can take paracetamol and ibuprofen for the pain and to help with the swelling.
