.... do so many tenth rate tv adds for so many tenth rate products? He can't need the money!

I hate to say this, but he's not getting any younger and sitting down and recording a voice over is probably easier on older feet than playing Claudius, as well as being much better paid.

My point was that he is a good actor so why does he need to take rubbish work.

The was a Fry & Laurie vox pop sketch, where an "actor" (Laurie) was saying ...

"You know, when I started acting, I wanted to be like my heroes ... Olivier, Gielgud ... so now I do any old crap as long as the moneys good ...."

Theatre work isn't all that well paid. Actors who want to work in the theatre have to supplement their income however they can. Patrick Stewart was in some fairly mediocre films, pre-Trek, even though he was an established stage actor.

I found out only today that he has been married for centuries to the gorgeous Hildegard Neill.

Because his voice is his trademark, maybe.
I bloody love him. I'd love to meet him! He was in the area once and I missed him.

I thought he did it to help all the rescue animals he has.
