Why does Brian Blessed ....

.... do so many tenth rate tv adds for so many tenth rate products? He can't need the money!

Even Laurence Olivier and John Gielgud did TV commercials.... It's lucrative.

Although an actor of my acquaintance once worked with Brian Blessed and said he was a total wanker. In fact, he's the only person said actor ever had a bad word about, so think he must very definitely have behaved like a total wanker.

RayRayBidet · 03/07/2018 22:48

Actors do voice overs because it's easy and well paid.
"Can you hear me Clem Fandango?"

LanguidLobster · 03/07/2018 22:49

Oh that's a shame Shatners

SaucyJack · 03/07/2018 22:50

Because ad directors like his voice, and they'll just give someone else the cash to shout like him if he doesn't?

Toooldtobearsed · 03/07/2018 22:51

I am suprised Shatners, still, i guess we can all have off days, but having spent some time with him, I can honestly say I thought he was lovely. He is, however, loud......

GloGirl · 03/07/2018 22:52

I'm sorry, I don't know how to get it out of "playlist" mode but I was instantly reminded of this episode of a TV show where they talk about his stint on City Hospital.

Actual tears laughing watching him with Vera Grin

Thesearepearls · 03/07/2018 22:56

Don't go and see him at the theatre

Or not at least if you are planning to sit in rows 1-7

You're probably good at row 8.

SimonBridges · 03/07/2018 22:57

I heard a comedian talking about this the other day.
Adverts are hugely well paid. Much more than acting work.
Anyway Blessed is more of a force of nature than anything else.

YouTheCat · 03/07/2018 22:59

I'm well back in the theatre, so should be okay. Grin

I just think he's really interesting.

Storminateapot · 03/07/2018 23:02

Apparently there's big money in ads & voice overs which allow stage actors to earn a living and still be in stage productions where the money is notoriously poor (relatively speaking).

mavismcruet · 03/07/2018 23:05

I'm going to see An Audience with Brian Blessed in September. Can't wait!

@YouTheCat take me with you. Brian Blessed is THE BEST

MooseBeTimeForSummer · 03/07/2018 23:06

There’s a clip on You Tube of Brian swearing like a trooper on Stephen Fry’s Spoken Word documentary. It’s quite the rant!

Sleepyandtired21 · 03/07/2018 23:06

There’s a bit on their old radio show where Ricky Gervais and Steve merchant talk about how they love doing ads because they’re “money for old rope” - they said it was about £5k for 10 mins work and that was nearly 20 years ago. There’s also a section in another episode of the same show about how Brian blessed climbed a mountain and shit himself, which is why I thought of them in the first place when I read this post.

CoodleMoodle · 03/07/2018 23:10

Political
Genuinely one of the funniest things I've ever seen and the first thing that pops into my head when anyone mentions Brian Grin

DH and I say "I don't want to give you a heart attack!", "I fancy you like MAD!" and "Boom titty boom titty" frequently!

SleightOfMind · 03/07/2018 23:12

Off to google BB delivering baby.
I need this to be true Grin

I went to a filming of ITV programme MR & MRS that he was on with his wife

It was great fun and he came over as a really lovely man, iirc he couldn't remember the colour or pattern of their hall carpet in the house

^ there Flowers

SimonBridges · 04/07/2018 00:14

You need to listen to the Brian Blessed episode of Richard Herring Leicester Square Theatre Podcast.

riviana · 04/07/2018 00:25

5foot5: he thought he went a bit over the top!

Now, that's frightening! And I thought he went over the top in "Flash Gordon."

That being said, I love Brian Blessed, and I am off to find that episode of Blakes7. I missed the last series of it because I was travelling when it was shown on local TV, and it's never been repeated here. You've prompted me to chase it up.

willstarttomorrow · 04/07/2018 00:26

Need to pay bills so a) spend lots of hours earning very little or b) spend a few hours on a voice over?
I luffs BB.

Aintnothingbutaheartache · 04/07/2018 00:31

There are slim pickings out there for actors. An advert can give you a huge amount of dosh for 1 to 2 days work, obviously depending on who you are and the product.
Don’t you be slamming Brian for earning a living!
I’m sure he’d rather be doing a run at the RSC but he’s got to get it where he can!

SleepPatternOfABat · 04/07/2018 00:31

He bit through an umbilical cord in a London park??

PandaPieForTea · 04/07/2018 00:39

I suspect that most actors don’t have great pensions. They certainly work well beyond retirement age.
