So DS at senior sch.. There's a lot round here. Some blazers, no tie. Others logo polo t shirt and trousers
DS school is blazer, tie, trousers. Policy is blazers must be worn door to door.. Even in this heat. Sometimes allowed to take off In class.
He has a 30 min uphill ( mainly) cycle and in 28-30 degree heat I told him to put in bag until got to school. Which he did.
Had a call this morning saying he's been put in internal exclusion for not wearing blazer door to door.
I think this is ridiculous in this heat.
It's not like he left it at home.

So has most other schools around here. It's crazy.

I'm the type that sends my kids to school unless they're at deaths door but I'd keep him home in that case and tell the governor's why. Absolutely ridiculous rule.

Spudlet · 02/07/2018 15:08

That is ridiculous. For goodness sake.

MarmiteAndCheeseRolls · 02/07/2018 15:10

I asked why. She said as they need to look smart. I said so you're telling me that every member of your staff has a blazer or jacket on.. She went quiet.
I'm very tempted to keep him home.
Surely getting to sch looking like a sweaty warthog because he's wearing a blazer isn't a smart look.!

That's really harsh and completely irrational in my opinion. It's boiling and the poor kids should not be expected to wear blazers. DD's school has a summer uniform policy thank goodness - when it gets warm they announce its come in affect and it means they can leave blazers at home. Seems like a very sensible, rational approach to me.

Spudlet · 02/07/2018 15:14

Nor a smart smell, my goodness there must be some stinky classrooms!

Dolphinswimmingupsidedown · 02/07/2018 15:16

Absolutely pathetic. What kind of school is this? Clearly not run by anyone with any common sense!

Tartsamazeballs · 02/07/2018 15:20

That's completely insane and I'd probably lose my shit at them negatively affecting my child's education over an arbitrary and ridiculous rule.

runningkeenster · 02/07/2018 15:20

Ludicrous. My son is not even taking a jumper to school.

Internal exclusion is so inappropriate, but don't tell me, it's an academy, so you can do b*gger all about it.

rosesandflowers1 · 02/07/2018 15:23

My DD's school is super strict about blazers (can't take them off unless they're inside a classroom with permission.) But they usually get a message sent round in summer that it's okay to leave them in their bags.

I'd be fuming. They've impacted his education, all for wearing a jacket - when it's around thirty degrees.

Sleepyblueocean · 02/07/2018 15:24

I wonder what would happen if half the school decided to ignore the door to door rule.

TheMagnificentEthel · 02/07/2018 15:25

Hot countries often have the door to door blazer rule. The kids will survive.

sirfredfredgeorge · 02/07/2018 15:28

Challenge the uniform policy:

It appears to have been designed to ensure that only kids who can be driven in air-conditioned cars can attend the school, as the extra difficulty and laundry / wear required from clothes will increase the cost.

Ask specifically how the effective banning of cycle commuting meets the schools statutory obligation on sustainable transport, get a copy of the school travel plan, find out what it says about cycling in appropriate clothing (a blazer would rarely be appropriate)

Make a formal request for a reasonable adjustment based on the health and the safety of the commuting child (ie not wearing dark clothing cycling, not wearing three layers due to over-heating, lack of access to showers at school facillitating bullying due to being smelly etc.)

IAmBreakmasterCylinder · 02/07/2018 15:31

My DS school is also blazer and tie and super strict about door to door but they have tweeted and parentmailed that rules have been laxed from now to end of term and blazers can be in bags as long as tie on and done up.

DS doesn't ever take his off as he keeps everything in his pockets and is scared of losing his keys/bike lock/3 strikes card/money/homework! I swear he'll be a stone lighter by the summer holidays!

Snowysky20009 · 02/07/2018 15:31

Harsh! Ours was no blazers last week, PE kit this week along with other high schools in the area.

MarmiteAndCheeseRolls · 02/07/2018 15:32

Yes an academy..

OP posts:
RadicalFern · 02/07/2018 15:35

They should certainly make adjustments for the heat. Nobody should be wearing anything more than they have too right now!

PorkyPortia · 02/07/2018 15:37

Are you in Kent by any chance Marmite ?

hendricksy · 02/07/2018 15:40

Our school is letting them wear pe kits . No blazer in this weather !

AChickenCalledKorma · 02/07/2018 15:43

My children's school is an academy but still manages to apply common sense to blazer rules in a heatwave. No blazers required here for the time being.

feathermucker · 02/07/2018 15:45

We're in the South West and our headmaster has said no blazers until end of term.

Tallace · 02/07/2018 15:50

My ds's school says they can wear polo shirt and PE shorts during the hot weather. Seems very sensible to me.

TeenTimesTwo · 02/07/2018 15:52

Ours is a (convertor) academy. Blazers off last week and this.
OP's school is crazy. Rules are one thing, but blind enforcing is daft.

HotelRedFace · 02/07/2018 15:52

We are in the South East and received the no blazers email at the start of last week. It's ridiculous that they should be expected to wear them in this weather.

Just an idea, but could he cycle to school in different clothes and arrive just early enough to get changed when he is there? Surely he can't get into trouble for failing to wear a blazer if he is totally out of school uniform and before the day starts? Otherwise, I would be keeping him off whilst you challenge this.
