So DS at senior sch.. There's a lot round here. Some blazers, no tie. Others logo polo t shirt and trousers
DS school is blazer, tie, trousers. Policy is blazers must be worn door to door.. Even in this heat. Sometimes allowed to take off In class.
He has a 30 min uphill ( mainly) cycle and in 28-30 degree heat I told him to put in bag until got to school. Which he did.
Had a call this morning saying he's been put in internal exclusion for not wearing blazer door to door.
I think this is ridiculous in this heat.
It's not like he left it at home.

"The kids will survive"

How much money would you be willing to bet on this.

motortroll · 02/07/2018 20:47

Sorry not rtft but the op is absurd. I took a class out on a short field excursion today walking for 20 mins and staying at the location (outside) for around 1hr 30mins. They were not required to wear blazers or carry heavy bags and everyone had a water bottle. They looked smart enough to approach members of the general public (they have logo'd polo shorts for summer) it hit 31degrees here today. Of course I wouldn't make then wear their blazers and if the head had told me to I'd have laughed in her face!

Absolutely right to challenge and I bet there are some female teachers with skirts above the knee and shoulders on show. There always are in this heat! (Not me I'm perfect Wink)

StealthPolarBear · 02/07/2018 20:52

What classes as the journey to school? What about if be cycles to three minutes away then puts it on? My mum and dad live thirty seconds away from my Dcs school, if I drop them there to walk in the morning that is just me driving them to their grandparents surely

HelenaDove · 02/07/2018 20:55

So i take it then..............as this school can dictate what the kids are wearing offsite then the school will also be responsible for any bullying that occurs offsite too. They wont be pulling the old "its out of school hours so not our problem" spiel

Im sure the school wouldnt want to be seen as goalpost moving and emotionally abusive.

Notevilstepmother · 02/07/2018 21:00

I’m normally all for supporting the school, but cycling in a blazer in this weather is beyond ridiculous.

missymayhemsmum · 02/07/2018 21:03

Report them to the Chair of Governors under safeguarding. Making children wear inappropriate clothing for the weather is a health and safety issue. They are putting them at risk of heatstroke. And ridicule them in the local paper.

NCPuffin · 02/07/2018 21:08

Haven't RTFT, but this is ridiculous! The school I teach at has shirt, tie and blazer as part of the uniform, but has allowed ties and blazers to be taken off since the start of last week. Blazers are allowed to come off with permission in classrooms anyway, but must be carried, rather than put in bags. I thought our head was strict on uniform but I guess not. We even allow shorts!!

hennaoj · 02/07/2018 22:57

It's not about being a bit uncomfortable for some children though. Try having sensory processing disorder, autism or just running hotter than other people do. It's madness to make them wear blazers in this heat. Besides the stupid conforming to clothing rules is dated anyway, office jobs are becoming more and more none uniform as it is.

Rufustheyawningreindeer · 02/07/2018 23:08

henna

I agree

Ds2 is one of those that run hot, before the blazer rule was relaxed he would come home pouring with sweat

MaisyPops · 02/07/2018 23:11

Getting students to wear their blazers in this heat is stupid... but is threatening hyperbole news stories.

I'm neither here nor there on uniform as an entity, but I love when it gets hot/cold or at the start of the year because all the MN uniform threads creep out.

JessyJames · 03/07/2018 09:59

I find it hard to understand why the schools feel they have control of the child beyond school hours.
Fine if they are doing something to damage the school's reputation, but cycling in shirt sleeves isn't the end of the world.

MojoMoon · 03/07/2018 10:56

My mum got a ruler across the back of the hands for being seen in town waiting for a bus after school on the winter with the wrong colour gloves on.
That was the late 50s.
It was a stupid policy then and remains a stupid policy now.

Schools should be encouraging cycling and walking to school. No adult cycles uphill for 30mins to work wearing a suit and stays in it for the rest of the day. It would be stinky and considered disgusting. So this policy is lot preparing children for the world of work.
A sensible policy would allow kids to cycle in shorts and t shirt and shower and change when they arrive. This is how real offices work.

Bibesia · 03/07/2018 20:03

School uniform is ridiculous under any circumstances; uniforms that involve blazers and ties are particularly ridiculous. Any school head that makes pupils wear them in this weather deserves to be sacked.

Gileswithachainsaw · 03/07/2018 23:46

Having just tried on some blazers today I have to add that not only are they hot I have come to the conclusion that they also have that shoulder padding for no other reason than to make it impossible for you to size up without looking like you are about to play American football. Crafty fucking way to get you to have to buy them more often ....another reason the bloody thongs should just be thrown onto a pile and burnt.

Gileswithachainsaw · 03/07/2018 23:46

Things

DrMadelineMaxwell · 03/07/2018 23:50

All high schools here are allowing the pupils to wear their PE kit to school in lieu of uniform. A very sensible decision. I'm glad that DD has several changes of PE kit!

Trish10000t · 19/07/2018 17:27

@SunnyShades

I imagine requiring a jumper in addition to the blazer most of the year helps. That way they can just not require the jumper during hit weather and the students are cooler and more comfortable even when still wearing their blazers.

Mmmmmmmchips · 19/07/2018 17:35

My SS had the same policy.

Nasty poo brown blazers to be worn come rain or shine. Some teachers didn’t even allow them to be removed during lessons.

One year for about 3 weeks they gave us a choice of blazers or shit brown jumpers Hmm

Mmmmmmmchips · 19/07/2018 17:38

I think it’s not necessarily a case of not being used to hot, but things are designed especially buildings (generally) in the U.K. to hold heat in, such as insulation, windows etc

TaliZorahVasNormandy · 19/07/2018 17:42

I'm in Essex and the local Secondary has relaxed it's blazer rules.

It's so bloody hot, most of kids are walking.

Knittedfairies · 19/07/2018 17:52

I think I’d be asking about the dress code for staff too; what’s sauce for the goose, and all that.

Downtheroadfirstonleft · 20/07/2018 13:51

Our school is a sticker for uniform, but have a temperature above which blazers can be taken off (it thinks it's Henley).

Female teachers all looking v comfortable in maxi dresses and flip flops...

Trish10000t · 20/07/2018 21:37

Not sure why what teachers are wearing has anything to do with it. They’re just adults doing their job. I don’t expect them to be uncomfortable just so the school can enforce its uniform.

Knittedfairies · 21/07/2018 14:01

@Trish so it’s fine for the pupils to be uncomfortable?

echt · 21/07/2018 14:02

it’s fine for the pupils to be uncomfortable?

The teachers don't make the rules.
