To find phone calls on the train really annoying

Person sat next to me, taking loudly about the most boring and inane stuff. I've got a long way from London to Glasgow and only just started and I want to tell her to stfu.

Any sort of noise is too much - listening to two women talking this morning. Once of them mentions a hand towel at her granddads house that was known as the winky wipe. Thanks for that.

Agree about confidential. It's always the most boring stupid stuff. I don't care about what you are thinking about having for dinner you mouthbreather.

Why do they need to speak so loudly? Modern phones pick it up just fine at a normal level.

YANBU. It's really annoying and very intrusive. I'm one of those people who goes somewhere more private to make or receive calls, even when it's just my partner there, because it's impossible to concentrate on anything else if someone near you is using the phone.

While we're on this subject - people who get on treadmills next to (or even worse, either SIDE of me) and then conduct really loud conversations. I'm not saying you shouldn't chat at the gym, but I find it really intrudes on my headspace.

I now always book the quiet carriage - it's a game changer! No phone calls, no chatting, no message beeps, just blissful silence for the whole journey.

(Plus a very British awkwardness if someone dares to break the silence - lots of eye rolling and tutting until a Very Brave Person tells them to end the call and thus becomes the hero of the train)

It’s always about the most pointless things as well like they are talking just for the sake of talking because they are bored on a train. I was sat near somebody the other week who rang his whole phone book trying to find someone to talk to

I was once on a train with a brave person who repeated to her friend sitting next to her everything the one on the phone said or commented on it, clearly and audibly. It was a very effective way of securing silence but you have to have a particular kind of personality to do that.

its not the calls themselves... its the LOUD TALKERS.
There just seem to be some people who have to talk at top volume and really animatedly when on the phone....
I dont mind people on the phone on the train.. I sometimes ring people for a chat to kill the time on long journeys.... but would it kill you to remember you are actually in public with a load of strangers who are trying to relax but end up listening to you?

Yes...it's such a shame they didn't think of a means by which people can use their phones to send messages in words - a sort of 'text' function, if you will.

I think there's a balance to be struck here. People who have long and loud conversations are being antisocial and rude. However, some people seem to expect silence on public transport, and I think that's both unrealistic and just as self-centred in its own way. There has to be some give and take on both sides if we're all going to manage to rub along in what is, objectively viewed, quite an awkward and cramped social situation with strangers.

I booked quiet carriage to London a few weeks ago, and it was no quieter.
Someone was on their phone, there was a group of teenagers chatting.
It was so disappointing!

The pompous men & women, full of their own self importance are rife ones that do my head in, bellowing into their mobiles, like town criers.

The trend these days is not to hold the mobile to one's ear but to hold in in front while shouting at it.

The day will come when I will be unwilling to leave the house.

There was a woman on my tube yesterday saying "So I told him I'm not the type to jump into bed with just anybody..."

But then we reached my station. I was almost disappointed about not hearing the rest of that one.

joy I was once told, to my astonishment, by a member of train staff that quiet carriages only ban electronic noise - so you can't talk on the phone or play music, but you can talk as loud as you want! I thought this was totally bonkers and it might just be an Abellio Greater Anglia thing (they are generally quite shit - but it's possible that the teenagers weren't technically breaking the rules!

I always move if it goes on for more than 5 minutes. Even the whispery ones are weirdly intrusive.

But the new thing now is to put them on "speaker". Just why why why!

I don't mind people talking hopefully not too loudly, but thats fine by me. But the phone thing is SO intrusive. Last time I was on a train I had to listen to this woman's 20 minute furious argument with her water company . I felt completely rattled by the end of it. Selfish selfish selfish woman.

I went on the beach yesterday for some quiet time in the late afternoon. There were very few people there. Some total wanker in a pony tail sets up shop about 20 metres from me and starts his phone calls.

Can't people just stfu for 10 seconds?!

A short call is fine, but when they go on and on when they're on buses or trains, it's so annoying. They are almost always super loud too. It's why I always carry headphones in my bag.

Expecting silence on public transport is a dickish move itself.

I hate it too, my husband often phones me when I’m on the bus home and I tell him I’ll speak to him when I get home. I’m naturally a loud person and don’t want to inflict my banality on the rest of the bus.

We went for dinner at a tiny restaurant- like 7 tables max and the table next to us were FaceTiming relatives to join in the singing of happy birthday
