i woke up this morning and checked my account. there was a large sum of money missing from my account. i checked my pending transactions and noticed it was taken from something ive never even heard of. I immediately called the bank but as its pending they said it has to leave my account before i can get a refund. now got no bank card and no money to get to the bank to withdraw anything. cant believe this has happened. never even heard of this site! also cant find my passport and the bank are really funny about letting anyone withdraw money from the bank without id (ive been refused before.) cant see why the bank didnt block the transaction. its a big sum of money.

oh no :( I've had a similar thing happen a few years ago (someone used my card details to buy flights in the US). The bank couldn't refund until the transaction was no longer pending. They did increase my overdraft in the meantime though. Do you have any other id you can show at the bank? Driving licence?

sexnotgender · 21/06/2018 10:46

One of the many reasons I have multiple current accounts.
The bank do indeed need to wait until it has posted rather than just pending as people will use pending transactions to commit fraud against the bank.

Butterflykissess · 21/06/2018 10:48

they suggested transfering it to my sisters account and her withdrawing it for me but i dont see her often so feel its a big ask. ive even had to give the kids a day or school as no way to get them there i know thats wrong but i was literally shaking and in tears this morning. never thought it would happen to me. dont feel like im going to get it refunded either until i see it i just feel worried.

What is the name of the company the money is being requested by?

Butterflykissess · 21/06/2018 10:57

something called drop box. never even heard of it. looked on trust pilot and it seems its happened to a lot of people but i never signed up to it. the bank said they will refund but cant be sure till i see it.

Dropbox is cloud storage. It is a legitimate company and people usually get caught up by a free trial that they don't cancel, like Amazon. If you contact them directly they'll usually refund the money.

Butterflykissess · 21/06/2018 11:01

ive never signed up to it though. trust pilot has 1 star review. seems a buisness site which i dont have. just going to go through the bank.

OneOrNone · 21/06/2018 11:07

Dropbox is completely legitimate, used by millions. Not dodgy at all. Someone must have used your card details to pay for their Dropbox account.

The same thing happened to me with someone using my details on online gaming sites. I also had to wait til the charges went through before being able to claim them back. The whole thing took months.

Is there anyone else you could transfer the money to that you see more regularly?

Butterflykissess · 21/06/2018 11:09

yeh thats what the bank suggested. that someone used my card. so cancelled it. never heard of it but was just going by trust pilot reviews.

Dropbox is totally legit and I would suggest you telephone them and give them what for. You'll get your refund much quicker like that.
Hope you get the refund quickly.

EveningHare · 21/06/2018 11:20

ive even had to give the kids a day or school as no way to get them there

not judging, but it might be an idea to have a little cash at home for emergencies - is it bus fare you didnt have?

Butterflykissess · 21/06/2018 11:24

i use my bank card as a contactless payment so no way to get there without it. london buses dont take cash anymore even if i did have any.

OP posts:
EveningHare · 21/06/2018 11:28

oh, i didnt know they did that (rural life!)

thats a bit crap then isnt it! are the bank going to extend/offer your overdraft?

sexnotgender · 21/06/2018 11:59

Your contactless might actually still work even though your card is cancelled.

Racecardriver · 21/06/2018 12:04

Don't you have credit cards you could use?

Racecardriver · 21/06/2018 12:04

Or apple pay?

Butterflykissess · 21/06/2018 12:19

im not sure what apple pay is? no credit cards unfortunately.

This has happened to us twice before, which is why we spread money across multiple accounts and always have an alternative payment method.
We got our money back both times.

Yacka · 21/06/2018 12:22

If you have a bank app on your phone usually there is a way to get cash. It sends you a code to your phone and at a cash machine you enter this. It has to be a cash machine specific to your bank e.g. a Natwest one or an RBS

sunshinewithabitofdrizzle · 21/06/2018 12:28

Dropbox is a fantastic company, we use their cloud storage daily at work. I assume what's happened is that someone's fraudulently set up an account using your details.

SluttyButty · 21/06/2018 12:31

I've installed Apple Pay on my iPhone just in case anything happened to my contactless card so I'd still be able to get on a bus or pay for something urgently. It's definitely worthwhile setting it up for any future issues.

Butterflykissess · 21/06/2018 12:32

yeh thats what i think sunshine. as im a sahm so definitely didnt use it. its something i never thought would happen to me. didnt know that about the bank app. going to try that now.

OP posts:
Auldspinster · 21/06/2018 12:33

You can't use contactless on a cancelled card and natwest/rbs get cash is connected to the card so you use that either but you can get an emergency cash code that you can take to any rbs or natwest atm if you call customer services. Don't know if there's anything similar with other banks as i don't bank with them.

WiltedDaffs · 21/06/2018 12:35

Apple Pay won’t work, needs card details added to it.

Mamamiaherewegoagainmymy · 21/06/2018 12:35

You can install Android pay if it's an android phone then just open the app at the checkout ( in the shop) and pay contactless
