i live in a ground floor mainsonette. my neighbours above me dont have a garden (which i do.) they have a shared path with me and next door (ground floor.) and the other neighbour upstairs. the people above me keep throwing out large items (think sofa, mattresses 2 of them) but they are placing them against the wall on the street of my garden. it looks really horrible. and obviously people assume it mines. its really unsightly! aibu to find this annoying?

sorry i should add the 2
mattresses and sofa was against my wall for 4 days.

I don't think 4 days is ott. They might have had to wait for it to be collected. Certainly our local council only collects once a fortnight

but its against MY garden wall. surely they could have waited till the dAy before it was due to be collected

I don't suppose they've got a lot of room up there in their maisonette without a garden or a garden wall. Did it damage your wall? Did it obstruct you getting in and out? Try not to be so territorial - at least it'll be quite a few years before they change their mattress again.

When you say "keep", how often exactly do they change their mattress or their 3 piece suite ? Confused

It sounds like a one off situation whilst they were waiting for collection to me.
I think YABU and intolerant of 'just one of those things'

this isnt the first lot of things as i said. fheyve thrown out several things and placed it by my wall. last time it was a fridge and microwave. the sofa and mattresses were blocking the street and obviously look like its coming from my house.

You are not being unreasonable - can't imagine wanting someone's cast off furniture stacked against my front wall.

erm round the side? the back of the building? across the road? literally anywhere but leaning against my garden wall

The council won’t collect it from round the side or back. It’s called a kerbside collection. Not a “wherever your neighbour is most comfortable with us collecting it” collection.

When we have mattresses or the like to throw out they're left in our hallway until collection day.

Just recently in fact it was a whole double bed and two mattresses in our hall (and one of the kid's bedrooms) for almost a week waiting for them to be picked up. So we spent all that time turning sideways to get through. But that's what you do. You don't just dump your crap on the street or someone else's property for days making the place look like Steptoe and Son's yard.

OP, I would be annoyed too. Next time ask them to take it off your wall and leave it round the back or something until collection day.

I would mind. I would go round and ask them to stop doing it as it's your property. To be reasonable I would say to them they can arrange collecting and use your garden on the morning of the collection but you don't have to do that even

Some councils aren’t good with picking up when they say they will though! They say put it out by 7am on the 12th and don’t turn up on the 12th so you ring them on the 13th and they say they’ll pick it up on the 14th so you leave it out and they turn up on the 15th.

So according to your drawing they’ve left it outside underneath immediately below their property? Which is what the council instructions will have told them

No, I don’t think you’re being unreasonable. I live with my mum in a sort of close. Eight houses. We’re at the ‘bottom’ of the U. We’ve arranged for the council to come and get things - a fridge; a bed frame - four days hence (say). It wouldn’t occur to me to put them out there at the mouth of the close, earlier than the crack of dawn on the morning they’re being collected. And I’ve had to do it on my own, because my mum is 76 and the kids are all under eleven. If for any reason I’d had to do it earlier, I’d have been damn sure to ask the neighbours if it was ok.

It’s on public property, not on your garden, isn’t it? It is your perception that people will assume it’s yours. However,you live in a flat, 50/50 chance it’s not you.

You can tell there's people on this thread that are the sort to leave a sofa out front for a year Grin YANBU why should you have to look at other people's crap because they're too lazy to go to a tip or get it collected sooner! My neighbours do it on their garden and it ends up making it's way to the path. Dumping like that however temporary encourages dumping and fly tipping. If you're getting a sofa/ mattress/ fridge deliver you have plenty of time to arrange to get it collected
