To think this is shitty parenting?

Along side our house is a public footpath, it has a small grassed area and it’s parallel to a busy main road so no one uses the grassed area as it’s not exactly the best place to picnic.
However, yesterday, when I came home (it’s was glorious weather) I could hear a baby crying. At first we couldn’t figure out where it was coming from as next door neighbours house is empty and for sale and most of our other neighbours are elderly.
Dh looked over our fence and sitting on a picnic blanket on the grassed area were three young women (never seen them in our village before and I’ve lived here for years and know most people) and a little baby of around 5/6 months old who was sitting in a carry car seat.
I’m not sure if any of the women was the mother but the girl sitting nearest to the child was smoking weed (stunk my house out!) and the smoke was going all over the baby.
Now, I have no problem with people smoking weed and know several who do but surely allowing a poor little baby to inhale that stuff is just crap parenting?!

Possibly not the parent? But either way, shit. I’m pretty free and easy about a bit of cannabis but would probably consider ringing the police in this kind of circumstance.

incy I wanted to report them but they left after I clocked them and I’ve never seen them before. Just a bit worried for that baby if it’s a regular thing. Hopefully not!

lion That’s my dilemma, what can I do about it? They left and I don’t know them. Doesn’t stop me feeling concerned for that baby though!

What's the relevance of them having a picnic on a patch of grass near a road? Some people don't have the luxury of a garden or transport to get to a more idyllic spot.

Exposing a baby to cannabis smoke isn't great however.

The relevance is that in the 20 years I have lived here I have never seen anyone have a picnic there. We are in the country surrounded by beautiful places to have a picnic and we have a large playground and park. The scrap of ground beside my house has lots of bushes, they were behind one of those, supposedly so they could smoke the cannabis without people noticing.

Nooo - a poor baby being made to inhale substances is nobody's business right? Hmm

I can see there is little you can do now but the "not your business" brigade drive me mad (note: I'm a trauma therapist - with client upon client who says "but why didn't someone stop them" .. I should tell them it's because it's nobody's business, right?)

@Bluelady are you actually serious? You think it's not right to protect a small baby? It's that's sort of horrendous attitude that sees children abused. Yeah I heard and saw stuff that wasn't right, but it wasn't my business so I did nothing! Awful attitude.

OP, they've gone now nothing you can do, had they stick around then maybe calling the police was a good idea. But they've gone so you can't.

I would imagine if they were lurking behind bushes they were likely taking drugs. If you don't know who they are there is little you can do about it. You just have to hope someone else takes action on behalf of the baby.

Pre the turn of the millennium, probably well over half the UK population grew up in smoke filled households, smoke boxed cars, etc. They turned out fine. Find something else to worry abojt.

Social services would remove baby or in the very least set up child protection order. Its not accepted or okay.

A child wouldn't be removed nor placed on the child protection register because their parent smokes weed around them.
